JOEM. MOON
DIED WITH
IIS BOOTS ON.
James McKinney, the Outlaw
Slain-
CORNERED IN A JOSS HOUSE.
He Was Called Upon to Surrender
His Answer Was a Volley—He
Took the Lite of Officers.
Bakersfield, Ca!., April 19. —
Jas. McKinney, ttie outlaw, was
shot and killed" here today. Deputy
Sheriff Tibbetts was also killed
and Constable Packard was shot
fatally.
SURROUNDED HIM.
Sheriffs Kelly, of Kern; Collins,
of Tulare, and Leovin, of Arizona
counties, with Officers Will and
Burt Tibbetts, Gus Tower and City
Marshal Packard, surrounded Mc-
Kinney shortly before 11 o’clock
this morning in a house. Will
Tibbetts and Packard approached
McKiuney in the house and ordered
him to surreud'er. McKinney an
swered by shooting. Will Tibbetts
was shot through the stomach and
died soon after; Packard was shot
through the neck and shoulders
and dangerously wounded. Burt
Tibbetts, a brother of the dead
deputy sheriff, shot McKinney
through the mouth and neck, kill
ing him.
IN A CHINESE JOSS HOUSE
McKinney has been in Bakers
field two days and was harbored
by friends in a Chinese joss house.
The house was a regular fort. In
the place with McKinney was Hul
Hulse, a desperado. McKinney
had a sawed-off shot-gun and Hulse
used a pistol. Hulse would not
obey the order to come out of the
barricaded house and the fire de
partment was ordered to the scene.
Hulse gave himself up. Pie was
taken to the county jail. An im
mense mob surrounded the jail and
tried to take him from the officers.
SMOKED HIM OUT.
Another accomplice of McKinney
was known to be in the house
whare the battle took place, but he
would not surrender. At 4:50 p.
m, t the building was set on fire and
the man was soon smoked out and
taken to jail.
MURDERS CHARGED TO HIM.
McKinney was accused of hav
ing committed several murders. He
was a native of California and was
first sent to the penitentiary from
Tulare county for assault with iu
tent to murder and after his release
went to Randsburg, Cal., where he
figured in some further shooting
troub'e. lie escaped trial, coming
to Bakersfield soon afterward,
where in the latter part of 1900 he
shot and killed Tom Sears, a gam
bler, as a result of a dispute over a
game of cards. No one saw the
fight and McKinney was acquitted.
HARD TO CATCH.
Last July in Porterville he killed
one man and wounded Constable
John Willis and another man in a
drunken row. He made a sensa
tional escape from capture and for
several months wandered practi
cally unmolested about thecountry.
A few weeks ago Sheriff Collins
located him at Hermosillo, Mexico,

Wine of Canlui ia a regulator of the
menstrual functions arid is a most as- |
tonishing tonic for women. It cures
scanty, suppn ,<sed, too frequent, irreg
ular and painful menstruation, falling
of the womb, whites and Hooding. It
is helpful when approaching woman
, hood, during pregnancy, after child
birth ami in change of life. It fre

that have been barren for years. All

and an application tor liis extradi
tion was made. The Mexican
authorities, however, had released
him before the arrival of the papers
and he disappeared again for parts
unknown.
ANOTHER MURDER.
Nothing more was heard from him
until April 5, when news came
from Kingman. Ariz., that Mc-
Kinney had murdered Charles
Blakely, known as the ‘‘Cowboy
Pianist” and Roy Winchester, a
young miner. Nothing definite is
known of the murder but it is
thought that McKinney took the
men for officers and laid in wait
for them on the trail.
After the shooting he went to a
ranch and compelled the rancher
to shoe two horses for him and
then rode away.
Posses started in pursuit of Mc-
Kinney, but he eluded them and
succeeded in reaching Bakersfield,
where his two brothers live.

Boy Character-
Exchange.
It is the greatest delusion in the
world fora boy to get the idea that
his life is of no consequence, and
that the character of it will not be
noticed. A manly, truthful boy
will shine like a star in any com
munity. A boy may possess as
much of a noble character as a man.
He may so speak and live the truth
that there shall be no discount on
his work —And there are such
noble Christian boys; and wider
and deeper than they are apt to
1 think is their influence. They
are the king boys among their
fellows. Dear boys, do be truth
ful. Keep your word as absolutely
sacred. Be kuown for your fidelity
to church and Sunday school. Be
true in every friendship. Help
others to be and to do good.
High Pr ssure Days.
Men and women alike have to work
incessantly with brain and hand to
hold their own nowadays. Never
were the demands of business, the
wants of the family, the requirements
of society, more numerous. The first
effect of the pi aiseworthy < ffort to
keep up with all these things is com
monly in a weakened or debilitated
condition of the nervous system,
which results in dyspepsia, defective
nutrition of both body and brain, and
in extreme cases in complete nervous
prostration. It is clearly seen that
what is needed is what will sustain
the system, give vigor and tone to the
nerves, and keep the digestive and
assimilative functions healthy" and
active. From personal knowledge,
we can recommend Hood's Sarsapar
ilia for this purpose. It acts on all
the vital organs, builds up the whole
system, and fits men and women for
these high pressure days.
I>OX T GET THIN
get fat; get nice and plump, there is
' safety in plumpness.
| Summer has tried your foodworks;
i winter is coining to try your breath
mill. Fall is the time to brace your
self.
But weather is tricky; lookout!
Lookout for colds especially.
Scott’s emulsion of' cod-liver oil is
the subtlest of helps. It is food, the
easiest food in the world; it is more
than food, it helps you digest your
food, and get more nutriment from it.
Don't get thin, there is safety in
plumpness. Man. woman, and child.
A Missouri editor has been ar
rested and lodged in jail for being
seen with a SI,OOO. He ought to
have known that such reflections
would do him.
Pimples, blotches and all other
spring troubles are cured by Hood's
Sarsaparilla—the most effective of
all spring medicines.

Over-Work Weakens
Your Kidneys.
Unhealthy Kidneys Make Impure Blood.
All the blood in your body passes through
your kidneys once every three minutes.
fThe kidneys are your
blood purifiers, they fil
ter out the waste o
impurities in the blood.
If they are sick or out
of order, they fail to do
their work.
Pains, achesandrheu
matism come from ex
cess of uric acid in the
blood, due to neglected
kidney trouble.
Kidney trouble causes quick cr unsteady
heart beats, and makes one feel as though
they had heart trouble, because the heart is
over-working in pumping thick, kidney
poisoned blood through veins and arteries.
It used to be considered that only urinary
trouble# were to be traced to the kidneys,
but now modern science proves that nearly
all constitutional diseases have their begin
ning in kidney trouble.
If you are sick you can make no mistake
by first doctoring your kidneys. The mild
and the extraordinary effect of Dr. Kilmer’s
Swamp=Root, the great kidney remedy is
soon realized. It stands the highest for its
wonderful cures of the most distressing cases
and is sold on its merits
