OF A JOB
The material sometimes runs
short. Painters who are in the
habit of estimating for Pure Lead
and Oil work, find, when the
HORSE SHOE BRAND is used,
they have considerable Paint left.
The HORSE SHOE BRAND is
a combination of Zinc and Lead.
It’s the Zinc that makes it go
further.
Zinc carries more Oil than Lead.
“Oil is the life of Paint.” Lead
alone does not carry enough Oil
and always “Chalks.”
The Zinc supplies the lack of
Oil, makes the Paint spread further
and stops the chalking.
The two pigments make a better
Paint than either alone; both
should be pure, of course.
We guarantee that, and prove it
by chemical analysis.
The HORSE SHOE means the
best in Paints. It’s the top notch
of excellence.
It’s all Paint, all pure, and no
worry.
You may go further, but you 11
only get tired.
There's nothing bettei possible.

To the Citizens of Cartersville:
My announcement as a candi
date for Mayor of this city, at the
election to be held in January next,
having appeared in our local paper
August 27th last, and still appears
in every issue of said paper, speaks
for itself; and, having been advised
by friends of certain reports being
circulated, purporting to represent
my position on certain questions,
but which in fact wholly misrepre
sent me; and in order to forestall
any impression and to contradict
these reports, which are being cir
culated by unscrupulous persons,
and that every citizen of Carters
ville may know exacily where I
stand, I have decided to publish
this article that no injustice shall
be done me.
I desire to say in the outset that
I was not asked, induced or per
suaded to run for Mayor by any
man or set of men. I entered the
race solely ou my own responsibil
ity. I have no axes to grind nor
any old scores to settle, and if
elected would assume the honor
absolutely unpledged and unbiased
free to do, and positively would
do, only that which I thought to be
to the best interests of our city in
every instance; and I affirm posi
tively that no man could control,
influence or prejudice me in any
way against what I believed to be
right and to the best interests of
the people as a whole. I reaffirm
that I am not and would not be
controlled by any man or set of
men, and I am not responsible for
the utterances or acts of any indi
vidual other than Paul Gilreath;
I and I ask every one that you do
not take any man’s word for my

position on any question, but to
ask me personally. I affirm my
affiliation with the right, with the
cause of right and morality, purity,
sobriety, uprightness and virtue,
and any other position imputed to
me is unqualifiedly false.
The only reason I have for want
ing to be Mayor of Cartersville is
a sincere desire to promote the ma
terial interests of the city by mak
ing a strong and persistent effort,
during the term of office, to induce
industries to locate here, and to
work faithfully and conscientiously
for the upbuilding of the city. I
make the assertion, and without
fear of contradiction, that I am
willing to, and positively will, de
vote more time and energy to the
upbuilding of our town during the
term of office than any man living
in Cartersville. I further assert
that I honestly believe that, with
the prestige the office would afford
by being in position to approach
men with money to invest, as the
head official of the city, that I can
and will do more for the develop
ment and upbuilding of the com
munity than any man in Carters
ville. I further assert that if lam
elected, and if the city does not
make more progress during my
regime than any in the past, I could
not have the nerve to ask this peo
ple to vote for me again for any
office,- and would not do so- lam
seriously interested in the develop
ment and upbuilding of this city.
Why should I not be? This is my
THE OLD RELIABLE

permanent home; I was born and
raised here, and every addition to
the community benefits us all alike,
increases every man's business in
the city, and w 7 e should therefore
all be willing to allow Cartersville
to prosper. We should relegate to
the rear petty differences, jealousy,
prejudice and ill will, as any di
vision in our citizenship works
great injury to our progress. I
positively will not allow any prej
udice to control me and keep me
from working for the best interests
of our town and our people as a
whole.
I am unwilling, too, for Carters
ville to remain in the same old ruts
she’s been sleeping m for twenty
years and more whilst our neigh
boring towns and cities are revel
ling in prosperity and happiness,
the result of standing together,
pulling together and w'orking to
gether in peace and harmony.
My platform is “for Carters
ville.” This is the issue, and I
stand upon it squarely, and any
effort to put the question before
the people on petty issues should
appeal to every working man in
Cartersville who is interested in
the progress of our community. I
am for Cartersville from center to
circumference—for the east side
and the west side —and every ef
fort of mine would be from an im
partial standpoint absolutely. I
would favor the maintenance of
both the East School and West
School, and it is my earnest desire
that both, and in fact all our
schools, be maintained upon as
high a standard as is possible.
I would favor the strict enforce
ment of city ordinances, especially
those pertaining to and regulating
sanitary conditions. These would
receive special attention.
I would not be in favor of taking
any action upon the question of
keeping hogs in the city by the
council. If any action is desired
by any one, it should be left to a
vote of the people, and I should
oppose taking any action on the
ques.ion any other way.
I would stand firmly and fear
lessly on the moral side of every
question, and if I cannot be elected
Mayor of Cartersville standing on
the side of right and morality, then
I will go down in defeat. Any
man that makes the statement that
Paul Gilreath is not on the side of
right and morality maliciously mis
represents me. Any o her position
imputed to me is absolutely falsej
and its author or bearer should be
known as intentionally endeavor
ing to do me an injustice by un
scrupulously taking advantage of
my absence to make such asser
tions.
What we need in Cartersville is
a pay-roll—industries to give em
ployment to our people, both white
and colored. I insist that the de
velopment and upbuilding of our
city is the issue paramount, ?nd
should appeal to every man that
works for his living, every mer
chant, business man and every
taxpayer who desires to see
Cartersville move up to the front
ranks, where she rightly belongs,
and move on in the march of prog
ress that is about to abide with us
indeed.
I stand on the issue I make,
and I ask you to refer to the cen
sus of 1880-1890-1900. Compare
the percentage of increase during
each ten years. Count, if you
please, the scores of young men of
our town who have absolutely been
driven from Cartersville to find
employment, and then sty to me
that the issue paramount is not the
one I make. I believe the people
of Cartersville want to see a change
in affairs, and want to see things
take on new impetus, and get out
of the kinks, and move up with
our sister towns and cities where
we rightly belong and should be.
I stand on the issue I make—
“ For Cartersville.” And, having
served the city as Alderman from
the third ward for 1902 and part of
1904, I refer to my record as to
whether or not I am willing and
able to do anything for Carters
ville, and I ask the support of
every man in the city interested in
the development and upbuilding of
our city.
I reaffirm all that I have said,
and I stand on the issue I make,
and if elected, and the good peo
ple should at any time decide that
I am not the man for the place, I
would be willing at any time to
resign the office upon a petition of
as many as ten reputable, sober,
law abiding taxpayers for any
stand I should take or for any vote
I should cast on the immoral side
of any question; and I believe that
I would so conscientiously and sat
isfactorily discharge the duties in
cumbent upon the office as to merit

Vanß. McGinnh.
Our entire community was made
sad oa last Saturday when the
news reached us that Mr. Van Mc-
Ginnis was dead. He had been in
feeble health for a number of years
and was confined to his bed five
weeks. He was converted two
years ago, and joined the Baptist
church here, of which he was a
consi-teut member and a conse
crated Christian. “Let your light
so shine among men that they may
see your good works and glorify
our Father which is in Heaven.”
He will be greatly missed, for
he possessed many friends; but
the angels will entertain him till
God calls 11s to him. He was a
devoted father and a kind friend.
It is so sad to think that genial
smile will be seer, no more, that
hearty hand-shake will never be
felt again, that he will w'alk no
more among the haunts of men;
but it is best. It is sweet to die in
peace with the world and Jesus.
God doeth all things well, and
causes blessings to follow adver
sity.

There’s a rainbow in the clouds.”
