Nothing in the way of news has
been received here from the Jap
anest side, but a rumor has reached
Rutnc that Vice Admiral Maka
rafi’s squadron was attacked by
the whole Japanese flttt, concealed
behind the Miokai Islands ( vliao
thi islands?), and his retreat was
cut off, and he was forced to ught
agiinst odds, with the result that
aii his ships were damaged, while
the Pctropavlovsk was surrounded
by torpedo boats, struck by five
torpedoes and blown up.
Another rumor is to the effect
that Rear Admiral Molas is among
those killed aboard the Petropav
lovsk.
No great attention is paid to
these rumors, but the universal
opinion here is that the official ex
planations of the disaster are un
satisfactory.
St- Petersburg. April 13, 6:38
p. ui. —The following official dis
patch has been received here from
Rear Admiral Grigorovitcb, the
commandant of Port Arthur, ad

“Port Arthur, April 13 —The

blew her up, and she turned turtle.
Our squadron was under Golden

the fleet.”
St. Petersburg, April 14.— Forty

Bezstrashni, whose destruction by
the Japanese was announced today.
St. Petersburg, April 14, 4:26
p. m —lt was officially announced

from the rest of the Russian fleet
at Port Arthur and suuk by the

life.
Tokio, April 14. —A brief repoit
from Rear-Admiral Uriu of Wed

A Remedy That No One Is
Afraid To Take.
Dr. Thacher’s Liver and Blood Syrup
has been used in thousands of homes for
fifty-two years with perfect confidence
and the most remarkable results.
The great success of this remedy is due
to the fact that its formula (which con
sists of Buchu, Hydrangea, Mandrake,
Yellow Dock, Dandelion, Sarsaparilla,
Gentian, Senna and lodide of Potassium)
has been freely published.
Doctors and Druggists everywhere do
not hesitate to recommend a preparation
which they know contains the best
known remedies for correcting all irreg
ularities of the Liver, Kidneys or Blood,
and the diseases caused by the failure of
these functions to perform their proper
work. *
Thousands of sick ones to whom life
has been a burden have written grateful
letters that others might profit by their
experience.
Blooming Grove, Tux , Nov. 13,1902.
I was suffering terribly with indigestion and
kidney trouble and sent to ray druggist for
something to relieve me.
As he sent me a package of Dr. Thacher’s
I.iver and Blood Syrup I concluded to try it,
and now I am deeply grateful to my druggist
as well as to you.
I had beer, a sufferer from these things and
a general run down condition for ten years,
and had only received temporary relief from
other medicines. Hut after using not quite two
packages of your I.iver and Blood Syrup I feel
as stout and hearty as I ever did in my life, and
lam satisfied that lam entirely cured. I feel
no svmptoms whatever of kidney trouble, and
my digestion is as good as any living man’s.
I can now eat whatever I choose.
I never had any remedy give me such quick
and permanent relief, and I can not put a cor
rect estimate on the value your medicine has
been to me. I would not take any amount of
money for it. Very gratefully yours
J. C. BROWN.

Pension Commissioner J, W.
Lindsey has compl ted the pay
ment of pensions for 1904, He
has paid out a total of $891,215.
The total number of pensioners
paid has been 4.571.
Of the pension fund of $879,000,
$5,000 will be used to pay the
expenses of the State Roster Com
mission. This leaves an unex
pended balance of $5,785 Com
missioner Lindsey says it will
require all of this to pay a number
of stragglers, who have not yet
been located, hut whose applica
tions have been approved. Last
year there was turned back into
the treasury about $16,000 out of
the same amount appropriated.
Commissioner Lindsey estimates
roughly that it will be necessary
to have $890,000. or an increase of
about SIO,OOO, to pay the pensions
foi 1905. He will not have his
applications in when the legislature
meets, so will have to base his
estim te upon past experiences.

The Coolies of Japan
;
A visitor to Yokohama in the
summer time may>Bee the ’riksha
coolies in their stamped blue gowns,
protected from the semi tropic sun
by bamboo hats, smoking their
tiny bronze pipes under pink cherry
trees and reading romances ot the
old wars. Or he may see tht m
wrapped up fiom sleet and rain of
January in their oilskins and
quilted kimoi os, lost to the world
in some heroic tale of ancient
fighting men. Regardless of the
incessant clatter of the wooden
clogs on the concrete pavement of
the Shimbashi Station of the Nortl -
ern Railway (Tokio), ’riksha coolie
duly registered and numbered, fol
lows in the columns of Jiji Shimpo
the latest reports aud rumors of the
war. He is a humble member of
the haimim class, but he has feel
ings and his sentiments, and as he
jogs up the Shikone-giuza he is
having his own thoughts and day
dreams. Changes are about to
take place in Japan. Some day
he will cast aside his coolie’s gown
and be a member of the haimim
class no more.
The railway train draws up at
Utsonomia or Shinagawa, tiny sta
tions up in the interior where the
train stops for refreshments, aid
the tea and orange venders peddle
their wares through the car win
dows- And as the newsboys cry
"Cebu! Cuba!” the third-class pas
sengers in their transition costume
—a strange medley of European
hats and shoes, sandals and clogs,
kimonos, woolen tights aud modern
“pants” eagerly catch up the latest
editions ol the newspapers from
Tokio.
In aill the peasantry of the Mi
kado’s empire, there is nobody who
considers himself a serf. The
haimim class is serf assertive. They
are not illiterate, as are the millions
of Russian peasants and the yel
low coolies swarming the interior
of China. Ground down for cen
turies in feudal dependence, for
biddeu marrying above his rank,
the Japanese peasant has improved
bis opportunities and risen, while
the lower classes, both in Russia
and in China, have remained sub
servient.
Too patriotic too express dissat
isfaction with his lot in life, the
cultivater of the tea and rice fields
of Japan has made the most of the
mere pittance that his labors yield.
In feudal time 9 he knew and cared
for little beyond the success aud
failure of the crops He was con
servative; feared any change lest it
s muld after his condition for the
worse. His wits were dull. He
took no interest m national affairs,
th< ugh passionately loyal to his
country’s gods. Today Korea
possibly lies open to him for devel
opment. Today he is devoted to
his gods and to his emperor.

Indigestion Causes
Catarrh of the
Stomach.
For many years it has been supposed that
Catarrh of the Stomach caused indigestion
and dyspepsia, but the truth is exactly the
opposite. Indigestion causes catarrh. Re
peated attacks of indigestion inflames the
mucous membranes lining the stomach and
exposes the nerves of the stomach, thus caus
ing the glands to secrete mucin instead of
the Juices of natural digestion This is
called Catarrh of the Stomach.
Kodol Dyspepsia Cure
relieves all inflammation of the mucous
membranes lining the stomach, protects the
