OUR GROWING SECTION.
The casual looker on has ceased
to marvel at the great strides the
south is making in material growth
and the true statements ot notable
developments are taken as a matter
of course. The undeveloped nat
ural resources of this section are
being better known every day and
this knowledge meaus increased
development. In varied advantages
no other section can approach ours
and the fiela for investment will be
difficult to crowd for some time.
The west, which seemed to be
catching the drift of capital some
years ago, is getting more and
more neglected in favor of the
south, which is the better field, and
the northerner is not only invest
ing in this section but is following
his capital and bringing others with
him. This means that the home
seeker as well as the investor finds
here the advantages to be looked
for, such as equable climate, free
from the rigors of winter, accessi
bility to raw materials, as well as
the best transportation facilities.
There is remarkable growth
reported in the south both in point
of northern-born population and in
industrial progress. This demon
strates that northern people and
capital are beginning to understand
that the south possesses vast areas
of undeveloped wealth and that it
has more to offer to the homeseeker
and the investor than any other
section of the country.
The northern-born population of
Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama
has increased to about 1 per cent
of the whole population in the last
few years and the increase in
Florida is even greater. In Miss
issippi there are approximately
30,000 Northern-born people com
pared with only 13,000 in 1890,
and in Louisiana there are approx
imately 27,000, compared with
19,000 in 1890. 111 the southwest
ern states the increase is even more
rapid.
111 a late weekly review of the
Tradesman we find, among other
new industries, a $50,000 machin
ery plant in Alabama; a SIOO,OOO
hardwood plant, a SIOO,OOO oil
company and a i.ooo-barrel flour
mill in Arkansas; a $250,000 lum
ber company and a $15,000 foundry
in Florida; a $50,000 railway joint
factory and a $30,000 oil mill in
Georgia; a SIOO,OOO hardware
company in Louisiana; a $1,000,000
lumber company and a $50,000
cotton oil mill in Mississippi; a
SIOO,OOO oil mill and a SIOO,OOO
showcase factory in North Caro
lina. and so on through the list of
states, with new industries for six
or a dozen different towns in each
state.
The influx of the northern peo
ple to the rural communities and
the addition of manufacturing
plants and investment companies
backed by large capital mean for
the whole south the continued
development of prosperity. This
means and increase in the wealth
of the country.

BONE FOOD
Soft and crooked bones mean
bad feeding. Call the disease
rickets if you want to. The
growing child must eat the
right food for growth. Bones
must have bone food, blood
must have blood food and so
on through the list.
Scott's Emulsion is the right
treatment for soft bones in
children. Littledoseseveryday
give the stiffness and shape
that healthy bones should have.
Bow legs become straighter,
loose joints grow stronger and
firmness comes to the soft
heads.
Wrong food caused the
trouble. Right food will cure it.
In thousands of cases Scott’s
Emulsion has proven to be the
right food for soft bones in
childhood.

WOMAN AND SOCIETY.
BY CARRIE GARNER JONES.
I The announcement is made of
the engagement of Miss Geneva
Attaway to Mr. Joel Garnette
Greene, Jr., the wedding to take
place at 4 o’clock on Wednes
day afternoon, June the Bth, at the
home of the bride. Miss Attaway
is a truly womanly young woman,
whose disposition is one of rare
sweetness and charm. By these
admirable traits she has made many
true friends who will read with
great interest this announcement.
Mr. Greene is one of Carters
ville's most gerial and enterpris
ing young men, and is a pharma
cist of much ability.
Miss Marian Strickland has re
turned from a visit to Washington,
Ga., where she was charmingly
entertained.
Young men are in grievous error
when they think the observance
of conventionalities solely for the
women. The man who mixes at
all in good society must pay due
deference to the amenities which
good society expects.
Mrs. Sam Jones’ friends are
pleased to hear of her convales
cence after a long and serious ill
ness.
See two women together these
days, and the odds arc largely in
favor of their discussing summer
plans. And vet ihe calendar rath
er than the actual position of the
mercury justifies this.
Misses Kate and Jennie Crouch,
accompanied by their aunt, Miss
Susan Crouch, left Monday for a
month’s stay at Galbreath Springs
in east Tennessee.
The Misses McKvven entertained
the Card club last week in quite a
charming manner. The score cards
represented the lucky four-leaf clo
ver, whereon tiny kodak pictures of
our court house were pasted. A
number of guests were present,
taking the substitute hands. After
the game a dainty salad course was
sei . T ed.
The advertising man for the sum
mer resort is certainly not back
ward in coming forward. The
vision of Paradise is net a circum
stance to what these men picture.
Miss Eva Mayes was the inter
esting little hostess, last Friday af
ternoon, .to a large company of
little folks at the pretty home of
her mother, “The Villa.”
The fancy work baskets are filled
with cross-stitch pieces—the shades
of our grauddaraes come back with
their samplers.
The trousseau of one of our j
brides to be is truly compored of
“things of beauty.” Such piles of
dainty lingerie, all hand-embroi
dered —in fact, every stitch was
done bv hand; such exquisite frocks
for street wear, evening wear, morn
ing negliges, everything that a
happy-hearted girl could wish.
The wedding gown, for which there
is always an extra heart throb in
the planning, is being made by a
fashionable modiste in another
city, and it is to be a beautiful cre
ation of chiffon cloth, real lace and
seed pearls.
Queen Alexandra once confessed
that her favorite dish was York
shire pudding, her favorite art
millinery and her favorite occupa
tion minding her own business.
The concert Monday evening
was of twofold interest. First, it
was the appearance of Mr. Claude
Newman, the violinist, who so en
trances his hearers; and, secondly,
it was the dedication of the audi
torium of the library building. The
chairs were bought last week by
the ladies of the Cherokee Club,
each lady earniug with her own
hands a dollar for this purpose.
Hereafter we shall have a beauti
ful hall for concerts and lectures,
of which Cartersville should be
very proud.
The concert in question was a
pronouheed success. Mr. New
man draws melody untold from his
instrument, and by many he
sidered the best violinist who ever

It is said that nothing is sure

not altogether true. Dr. King’s
