KILLS HIMSELF.!
Failed Macon Banker Blows His
Own Brains Out-
TRAGEDY SHOCKED MACON,
H Qu'Hv Stepped Out Upon the
Back Porch of His Home and
F red the Fatal Sh-t.
Macon, Ga , May 21. —The
closing scene of the greatest drama
that ha> ever occurred in Macon
took place this afternoon abou. 3
o’clock when Mr- Robt. H. Plant,
former president of the I. C. Plant’s
Son Bank and the First National
bank, one of the most prominent
buHtiess men and financiers ot ttie
south. corn-tinted suicide
The tragedy came as an unex
pected event, as no one anticipate,
such an action on the part of the
well known citizen.
The scene took place a few
minutes utter 3 o’clock, on the rear
veranda of Mr. Plant’s home on
College street, and death was
instantaneous, the shot being fired
tnrough the rignt temple, passing
through the brain and flattening
itself against the wall of the nouse
beyond.
When fout and, Mr. Plant was
lying in a pool of blood, Ins blue
dressing gown sogged with the
stream rapidly oozing from the
wound.
DETAILS or TRAGEDY.
Mr. Plant retired to his bedroom
about 2:30 in the afternoon and
was attended by his trained nurse,
who has been atj the Plant home
for the past two months attending
his illness.
After resting and sleeping for
some twenty minutes, he called to
Miss Meier, the nurse, and said he
wished to retire to the bath room.
She secured his dressing robe and
house slippers and assisted him to
rise from the bed. Mr. Plant’s
bedroom is on the northwest cor
ner of the lower floor of the house,
and opens into a short hall, at the
end of which is the bathroom.
The nurse accompanied him to the
toilet and as she opened the door
for him, he asked her to lower the
bathroom window. She did so
and as she was endeavoring to pull
down the sash, Mr. Plant returned
to his room and re-entered the hall
at about the same time Miss Meier
finishing closing the window. He
then entered tne bathroom, closing
the door behind him
Miss Meier waited just outside
the door, and in a lew seconds
heard the shot fired, but thought
it wa the crash of a chair which
Wts . itingin t'e bathroom, and
op tied the door to give Mr. Plant
atd, to discover that the room was
unoccupied. The bathroom opens
on to the rear porch and she passed
to the door, and on opening it
found Mr. Plant lying in a pool of
blood. She at once summoned Dr.
Winchester, one of the attending
physicians. He arrived within
five minutes after the call was
given, but life was extinct before
he reached the scene.
The family was upstairs at the
time of the occurrence, and rushed
to the scene on hearing the shot.
The home is bathed in gloom and,
together with the multiplied trage
dies of the widows and laboring
people who have lost their small
fortunes in the defunct bank, the
city is also in the throes of the aw
ful pall.
Up to the time of his failure a
few days ago, Mr. Plant was
erally quoted as being worth sev
eral millions.ln the partial state
ment of the private banking insti
tution the liabilities amounted to
more than two million and one
ha'f dollars, with assets of some
thing over one million, making a
total deficit of a little more than
$844,000. The assets, however,
are given as par value, and book
value, and will be cut at least fifty
per cent, when final adjustment is
made.
No report Las yet been given
out by the government bauk exam
iner, Mr. Albertson, who is at
tending to the affairs of the
defunct First National bank.

ence this afternoon between Pres -
dent Erwin, of the Atlantic Coast
Line, and President Shelton, of the
Southern Banking company, of
S .van. .dii, and the officials of the
McCaw Manufacturing company,
which concern is closely identified
with Mr. Plants interests.
Messrs. Erwin and Sheltou w'ere
h re representing Morton F. Plan ,
f New York, a relative of the
dead man, and it is thought that
R. H. Plant was in the hope of
securing aid from his wealthy
cousin, and that on learning that
nothing could be done he accepted
death in preference to facing the
coming events.
Mr. Plant was about 57 years
old, end was a Confederate soldier,
having been a member of the Geor
gia Military Institute at Marietta
when the call of Governor Joseph
Brown was made for enlistment of
that institution’s body of troops.
FEELING RAN HIGH.
Feeling ran high a night or two
ago 111 the city against Mr. Plant,
and two or three hundred citizens
gathered on Mulberry street in
tront of the court house, and made
| some very strong threats. A cred
itors’ meeting had been called for
yesterday afternoon, and but for
the statement given out by the
receiver on that morning ii is prob
able that Macon would have de
veloped another sensation, as the
most prominent citizens of the
citv were in the party which had
met the night before to discuss
stringent measures toward the
.dead banker. Ri mor were wild,
ione of them to the eliect that Mr.
Piant had gone to Saratoga and,
manv of the population readily
believed that he was not in Macon,
and when the news was verified
that he had committed suicide
there was consternation.
Mr. Piant had been identified
with the New York Life Insurance
company as its agent for a num
ber of years, having sold his con
tract with that company about a
year ago for the figure of $750,-
000. Tnis amount, with the ex
ception of a little over a hundred
thousand, it is thought, will go
toward the payment of the credi
tors of the I. C. Plant bank.
Take care of the stomach and
the health will take care of itself.
If people only realized the round
ness of that statement the majority
might live to a good old age like
Moses, “the eye undimmed, the
natural force unabated.” It is in
the stomach that the blood is made.
It is from the stomach that nour
ishment is dispensed to nerve and
muscle. If the stomach is “weak”
it can’t do its whole work for each
patt of the body. It it is diseased
the disease will taint the nourish
ment which is distributed, and so
spread disease throughout the body.
It was the realization of the imp. r
tance of the stomach as the very
center of health and the common
source of disease, which led Dr.
Pierce to prepare his “Golden Med
ical Discovery.” “Diseases which
originate in the stomach must be
cured through the stomach.” The
soundness of this theory is proved
every day by cures of diseased or
gans, heart, liver, lungs, blood —
by the use of the “Discovery,”
which is solely aud singly a medi
cine for blood and organs of diges
tion and nutrition. It is a temper
ance medicine, containing no alco
hol, whisky or other intoxicant.
Why Russia Loses'
New York Sun,
Why is it that the Russians lose
their creed? Because the country
is governed by the bureaucracy;
it is a politique of robbery. The
emperor of Japan has power
through the interest that every
.Japanese soldier and citizen has—
‘ the love for his government. Do
; you think that the Russian soldiers
I love their government?
The poor men have no chance
to practice to be gunners. Tneir
money is stolen; everything is
stolen—shoes, clothing, food, pow
der. The soldier is starved, frozen,
helpless; a poor, doomed cur. The
money goes into the pockets of
officials. Whereas, the Japanese
goes to the war for love of his
country, the Russian soldier has
no ountry; nothing to fight for, no
1 conscience, no love.
That is the weakness of the
Russian army; that is the reason I
see its defeat; that is tbe reason
why it should lose; why it should
be taught a lesson, paradoxical,
logical, for its own good. The
wretched Russian soldier is but the
piteous instrument by which the
whole world may be helped.

DO YOU NEED A
MEDICINE?
IT COSTS TOO MOTH I MG TO INVESTIGATE.
There is no one who does not need a
Liver Medicine occasionally.
The symptoms of Liver Complaint are
well known to every one, such as consti
pation, dyspepsia, loss of appetite, sleep
lessness, headache, a tirea feeling and
many others of a similar nature.
Thousands die annually by not heeding
the warnings of nature.
Many acquire some chronic disease
from which they never recover.
Many of these could be spared for years
of usefulness, by keeping in the home
some reliable remedy.
We believe that we can convince any
fair-minded person that there is no bet
ter remedy for the Liver known, than
Dr. Thacher’s Liver and Blood Syrup.
The formula is known, consisting of:
Buchu, Hydrangea, Mandrake, Yellow
Dock, Dandelion, Sarsaparilla, Gentian,
Senna and lodide of Potassium. You
know just what you are taking. How
many other formulas of a liver medicine
are published ? Ask your druggist about
this. It is already prepared and can be
taken immediately.
The strength is extracted in the most
skillful manner, certainly superior to any
powdered preparation known. (We also
manufacture a Liver Medicine in pow
dered form, with which any druggist can
supply you, but this, like all other dry
Liver Medicines requires preparation.)
Dr. Thacher’s Liver and Blood Syrup
is pleasant to take, does not lose its
strength, as Liver Medicine in dry form,
and will keep in any climate. 9
Your doctor, however skillful, could
prescribe nothing better.
There is no opportunity for a doctor
to make a mistake in writing a prescrip
tion, or a drug clerk to make a mistake
in compounding the same, (besides a
doctor’s bill and the cost of the medi
cine.) You can be absolutely sure of the
proper proportion being in every dose.
Dr. Thacher’s Liver and Blood Syrup
has been used with the greatest confi
dence and success in thousands of homes
for 52 years, and is prepared by a phar
macist of 25 years’ experience, in a labo
ratory equipped with the most modern
appliances for the most perfect safety.

Triumphs of Modern Surgery.
Wonderful things are done for the
human body by surgery. Organs are
taken out and scraped and polished
and put back, or they may be remov
ed entireh ; bones are spliced, pipes
take the place of diseased sections of
veins; antiseptic dress,ngs are app'ied
to wounds, bruises, burns and like
injuries before inflammation sets in,
which causes them to heal without
maturation and in one third the time
required by the old treatment. Cham
berlain’s Pain Balm acts on th's sail e
principle. It is an antiseptic, and
when applied to such injuries causes
them to lieal very quickly. It also
allays the pain and soreness. Keep
a bottle of Pain Balm in your home,

High Pressure Pays.
Men and women alike have to work
incessantly with brain and hand to
hold their own nowadays, Never
were the demands of business, the
wants of the family, the requi ements
of society more numerous. The first
effect of the praiseworthy eflort to
keep up with all these things is com
monly seen in a weakened or debili
fated condition of the nervous system,
which results in dyspepsia, defective
nutrition of both body and brain,
and in extreme cases in complete
nervous prostration. It is clearly
seen that w.iat is needed is what will
sustain the system, give vigor and
tone to the nerves and keep the di
gestive and assimilative functions
healthy and active. From personal
knowledge we can recommend Hood’s
Sarsaparilla for this purpose. It acts
on all the vital organs, builds up the
whole system and fits men and wom
en for these high-pressure days.
