GOVERNOR ANSWERS
Georgia’s Chief Executive Comes
Back At His Critics.
“FAKE” REPORTS DENOUNCED
Explain* What lie Did Say Re
garding the Ogden Party
and Dr. Parkhurst.
Governor Candler of Georgia Tues
day furnished the Atlanta newspapers
au interview in reply to the many
critics in other sections of his recent
ntterances given out in Savannah with
reference to the Robert C. Ogden party.
In the reports as published in the
northern papers the governor was
made to say many things he did not
say, and in consequence the editorial
references to the interview were, in
some instances, of a caustic tenor that
might not have characterized them had
he been correctly quoted.
Governor Candler at first intended
to have nothing further to say with
reference to the matter, but so repeated
and frequent have been the misstate
ments, that he desires to set himself
right once and for all, and in doing so
he does not hesitate to express him
self clearly and emphatically on the
subject. Speaking of the matter Gov
ernor Candler said in part:
“Life is too short for a public man
to follow up and correct all the slan
derous statements made about himself,
his actions and his utterances. Moun
tains are made out of mole hills, w ords
are put iu nis month that he never
thought of uttering, and false color
ings are put on what he does say and
his utterances are paraded under lurid
and misleading headlines by sensa
tional paragraphers. I have learned
to submit to all this, but there is
a point at which forbearance ceases to
be a virtue, and I have about reached
that point.
“The report of what I said about
the Ogden-Parkhurst party as printed
in the Savannah Press, though some
what highly colored, was substantially
correct, and was good-humored and
harmless, but as it got farther north it
was exaggerated and embellished by
falsehood till I would not have rec
ognized it if toy name had not
been connected with it. In the
conversation which Ihad with the
Press man, which has been dig
nified as an ‘interview,’ I said
nothing that could give offense to the
most sensitive, unless perhaps my joc
ular reference to Dr. Parkhurst as a
crank could do so, I ‘criticised’ no
body; I ‘roasted’ nobody; I ‘de
nounced’ nobody; I said not a word
about ‘d—d yaukee money; I impugn
ed nobody’s motives. I see Dr. Park
hurst is reported to have said in his
Sunday's sermon, ‘Had the governor
of Georgia, as did the governor of
North Carolina, come into direct con
tact with the personnel of the confer
ence,’ the criticism would not have
been made.
“This seems to be the head and
front of my offending, that I did not
dance attendance on this party at its
meeting in the colored church in this
city. I beg to assure the reverend
doctor that no offense was intended.
Had it occurred to me that this was a
courtesy expected of me I would cer
tainly have gone, at whatever sacrifice
of other duties, because I do not de
sire to be discourteous. The doctor
says: ‘The south does not altogether
love ns, but no one there hates ns.”
The latter part of this statement is
unquestionably true. There is here
and there iu the south a crank (for we
have some cranks here, too,) who
thinks he hates the northern people,
but this species is rare, much rarer, I
fear, than the men at the north who
hate the peiple of the south.
“The amiable doctor may differ with
me in this, but he would not if he
could see the hundreds of denuncia
tory and vilely abusive letters in my
possession, some of them from his
own city, iu which the vilest epithets
are applied to the south and southern
roen, and even southern women, such
as ‘you cannot rahe men in the south,
you raise brutes,’ ‘your state is a dis
grace to the nation, ‘snuff dipping
sluts, ‘d—d daughters of sin,’ etc,
“These vile denunciations and slan
'lerß have not emanated alone from ig
oorant fanatics, but some of the north
ern newspapers have been just as bit
ter and slanderous.
“The southern white people and the
southern negroes understand each
other and do not hate each other when
let alone. These miserable assassins
°f character and of the peace commu
xuties are chargeable with all the race
fiction that exists. We had none of
| rofor9 they intermeddled. They
rove abused the liberty of the press
a '" ia ve construed it into license to
s under and abuse those who, kuowing
■c situation in the south better than
, d° dare to dissent from their
'rogmas born of ignorance and preju
,lce, °r to resent their insults and
slanders.

A London special says: The first
step in the direction of the consolida
tion cf some of the biggest trans-At
lantic shipping interests has been
accomplisued by the purchase by J.
Pierpout Morgan & Cos. of the Leyland
line of steamers. A deposit on the
purchase money has been paid.
A representative of the Associated
Press learned that the purchase of the
Leyland line is tantamount to its con
solidation with the Atlantic Transport
line.
For the present the Leyland line
will retain its name and be under the
same management, though changes in
the directorate are likely to occur
shortly.
President Baker, of the Atlantic
Transport line, said :
“Although the Leyland line has been
purchased by the Morgans, I am not
yet at liberty, nor, indeed, fully in a
position to discuss the arrangements
projected. Beyond the purchase noth
ing will be settled till I return front,
the United States in Juue.”
The result of the projected consoli
dation will be a steamship company
with the la-gest tonnage of any coni'
pauy in the world.
The officials of the Leyland line, in
confirming the sale, said that au
official statement will be issued from
the head office of the line at Liverpool.
It is understood that the shareholders
will receive £l4 10s. for each £lO
share.
The Leyland line, whose fleets will
thus pass into the control <>f Ameri
cans, is one of Great Britain’s greatest
shipping institutions, far exceeding
the Peninsular and Oriental Steam
Navigation Company iu tonnage and
importance.
