There has been no spring. ___ Mr. Bryan says he will not be a candidate in 1904. I lanna will be, however. Some of our farmers could make good money by planting out toma toes for the canning factory. Atlanta should build that union tlepot again. It has been a long time since they have had one. Atlanta druggists have gone to scrapping in earnest, but no great demand for arnica and court plas ter is noticeable. With good crop prospects, lots of picnics, plenty of singings, old Bartow promises to be a warm number this year. And to think of it, there is no politics to mar the festivities! There is a sad death of political news these days. One year from today will be quite different. In the meantime the people can rock along, for the politicians will ar range things anyhow. There has been a chewing gum trust formed. As the girls have all along figured as patriots, they will knock out this trust by quitting the chewing of gum. They are mistresses of the gum situation. It is up to the people of Garters ville whether they will have electric lights or not. Now is the chance to settle the matter and take it off the slate. It has been a sore ques tion too long already, and the people should not be slow in act ing. Atlanta is now proposing to buy the government building for a city hall. This will call for anew federal buildibg to cost away up into the millions. Your Uncle Lon Livingston seems to be behind the project and that means it will be carried through. Mr. Jim Calloway has retired from the LaGrange Reporter to take a railroad position. Mr. W. W. Randall, a very capable news paper man, assumes editorial and business management of the pa per. The Reporter is over half a century old and wielded a great influence fur good in days gone by. Already there is talk by some that State Treasurer Park must be defeated, just because he had the backbone to do a plain duty as marked out by the constitution. State Treasurers must be flexible to suit politicians and others. The school teachers should be paid, but it is not the fault of the treas urer that the legislature made no provisions for doing so. While several of our farmers near Carters\ille, have plant ed considerably in peach trees, many yet contemplate going into the business If Cartersville could capture the North Georgia Fruit Grower’s Association next year it would no doubt give the business a great local impetus, and The N pww hopes that otrr> citizen*’ -wrH commence in time next year and c: pt ire it. Wednesday of next week the Cedartown firemen's tournament commences. The News hopes to record some Cartersville victories in its next issue and thoroughly believes it will. President McKinley told the people of El Paso not to feel unv uneasiness as to imperialism. 1 he people have quit being uneasy and have about accepted it as a coming fact. The only thing that beats the newspaper business these days is Standard Oil Company stock. One share was quoted at $842 the other day. This share originally cost aTout thirty cents. As the Atlanta Constitution fix ed a ten cent price on cotton last year farmers confidently expect it to do it again this fall, conse quently a big crop has been pitch ed. New York speculators have gone wild on stock markets. Cotton and other things are dropped for the present. Chattanooga is wrestling with her street fair this week, which is s aid to be very fine. The Rome Tribune is agitating the use of kerosene oil for destroy ing mosquitoes. WHY NOT BORE FOR OIL? From the Washington Gazette. We feel it incumbent on us as a public journalist, to call attention to a matter that lias lain dormant for some years, and urge upon those who own the lands or on any public spirited citizens to take an interest, which we believe would meet with the approval of the parties who own the property. It is a well known fact that a few years ago unmistakable evi dences of the existence of oil in the earth were discovered out at Anthony’s shoals, in the northern part of Wilkes county. It is true that on the surface of the ground the flow is so slight that it attracts little attention, but the positive evidence of the existence of oil certainly warrants an investigation to see if there is oil there in pay ing quantities. It would cost but little to bore into the earth, and with what is already known, there is a fair promise of developments that would bring great wealth. If the owners of the land do not care to undertake the enterprise, some active and energetic outside parlies might easily obtain an oil interest, dependent on finding oil. We believe the owners of this property would be glad to make such an arrangement as this, as the enterprhe if successful, would prove mutually beneficial to all. Out at Anthony's shoals there is decidedly better promise of oil than there was known to be around Beaumont, Tex., up to only a few months ago, and with a. little en terprise and activity those people out in that part of Texas, have made developments that are bringing untold millions to them. There, where there was not the suspicion of the existence of oil, gushes have been found which surpass anything of the kind else where in the whole world. Of course, the people there are wildly enthusiastic over the discoveries they have made, but there is cause for them to be so, for the flow of oil even exceeds their flow of enthusiasm. The benefits have not only come to the people on whose lands this oil has been discovered, but they are being reaped by every line of business and almost every individual person in that part of the country. As there is such a fair promise of developing right here at our doors, at least a good proportion of such wealth, we cdl the atten tion of enterprising men to the great posibilities or we might say probabilities that seem to be with in easy reach. In almost every section of South there have in recent years been discoveries of hidden wealth thac have brought great fortunes to those people who have followed up leads that were far-less pro mising than the surface flow of oil right here in our own county, feel sure that before many years this matter will be investigated, but we would like to see our people reap the benefits right now. THE HAPPY HOME. Home is the refuge of our lift. ’Tis r.t t the beautiful shade trees that urround a house, nor the gravel walks, nor the painted walks, the beautiful pictures that adorn them, nor the elegant fur niture, that makes a happy home, but it is the presence of Jesus that causes love to flow from heart to heart and peace and acquaintance to dwell therein. The home has a sacred meaning, THE WEEKLY NEWS. CARTERSVILLE, GA and should be freed from the evil of the world. How sad it is to see a family being driven into unqui | etness by one unpleasant member, j It matters not how poor we are, ; we can still be happy if we will I only try to makeeach other l.appy. Let any one who owns a house of any sort whatever, look around ! and observe how it is governed by | that sweet mother, father, sisters : and brothers. Men are often driven from home into places o f evil because home is not happy; women are driven into despondency because neglect of home and children and seek pleas ure abroad because home is not what it should be, lighted up with sunshine and the smiles of Jesus. Many a child goes astray, not because there is a want of home, hut because home lacks sunshine. Some houses are full of love for strangers, and ugliness and gloom for the ones to whom it belongs. A cheerful nature is a most valua ble aid to a happy home. Nothing makes a home so happy as the sun shine of a contented disposition. Now let us all endeavor to make home happy.—Exchange. Each Stop Puts the Company Out From 50c to $1.25. Macon Telegraph. A party of friends vere riding on one of the fast living through trains that dart from Macon to distant points without paying heed to intermediate points. One of the party had an order to stop the train at a small station near Ma con. The fare that he had paid was small because the distance he was to travel was not great. “Why, you ought to pay double fare to that station,” remarked a friend. “Why do you say that?” was asked. Because it costs money to stop a train, was the reply, the speaker being a 1 experienced railroad man. “Are trains intended to be stop ped?” was asked. “Yes, but if you will figure a little you will see that it is often unprofitable for them to stop, lake your case, for in tance. You pay 50 cents fare to your station; and it will cost the company $1.20 to stop for you to get off. This is an extra heavy train. An ordi nary passenger train would not cost more than 50 or 60 cents. Railroad men have figured it down to such a point that they estimate that each slop along a route costs that much. This covers the wear and tear to rolling stock and the waste of coal used in getting up speed after the stop. It requires comparatively little exertion for the engine to carry its load along after it gets in motion, but a quan tity of coal is thrown out by the exhaust every time the machinery undertakes to start, and that is what constitutes the biggest item of expense.” Ihe 5° cent passenger did not hesitate to get off the train, how ever, when it stopped for him. Agricultural circles will be relieved at the news that the in ventor of the“gold brick” com merce is dead. Ilis name was John V. Triplett and he died —in poverty, of course—in Chicago, after having swindled various persons out of more than a million of dollars. There are many fol lowers of Triplett who still sell gold bricks that contain no more gold than the shell or surface, and there are, strange to relate many Worthy persons who still persist in buying these absurd devices for robbing them of their money. In fact, some wag has made mention of a farmer who counted the number of his trips to town by the gold bricks arrayed on his shelves. This, of course, was an exaggeration in two ways—for few men could be swindled twice by the same trick, and not all those swindled were residents of of the rural districts. Yet the news that the man who devised the swindle has just died will seem interesting, for in popular estima tion the gold-biick fraud seems as old as the hills, and, we might add, as enduring.—Philadelphia Times.
