’ROUND THE WORLD.
(Rene Granger.—Letter No. 6)
Eastern and Oriental Hotel,
Penang, April 6th, 1901.
In the postals I sent from Co
lombo I said nothing about the
town, etc. We arrived there at
1:30 a. m. last Monday. I was up
on deck with Messrs. Evans and
Stewart when we came into the
harbor. There is one of the finest
breakwaters in the world here.
One side of it is still uncompleted
after several years hard work. One
of the Russian cruisers was lying
in the harbor having arrived the
evening before. She’s a dandy
too, and makes 22 knots. On our
way over here another one passed
us.
Colombo is a very pretty town,
just as Penang is. Well to tell the
truth I dont see how under any
circumstances a respectable town
over here can fail to be pretty,
with all the tree palms, and other
broad, shady trees lining the road,

Beautiful! Beautiful! At Colombo
I took a jinricksha ride out to the
Galle Face hotel, a nice ten minute
journey, part of it being along the
beach. Out at the hotel I saw one
of those jugglers of whom I sent
you a picture, playing with a
cobra and a mongoose. Do you
remember Kiplin's Rikki-tikki
t.ivi and the cobra stories of St.
Nicholas? The mongoose looked
like a large rat, but I didn’t
know what it was so I asked.
I invested 13 shillings in a pith
helmet, very light in comparison
to its thickness, an inch, just the
thing for jungle work.
We had a very nice trip over
from Colombo and arrived here
2:30 this morning. We were told
previously that we would have to
get right off, but at four o’clock
it was announced that we would
not be taken off till 7 o’clock. So
then I sat down in a chair and
slept till 6 when 1 was waked up
by the noise of unloading etc.
Perhaps I felt a little sleepy and
perhaps 1 didn’t. And stili worse
there’s a sty coming on my right
eye!
There is very little difference be
tween this town and Colombo, ex
cept that here there are a few more
palm trees, and there are 300,000
Chinamen, who pull the ‘rickshas.
I’m quite used by this time to these
little “man carriages. Came over
from Colombo on the P. & O. S. S.

Have to close for the homeward
bound mail.
