In a New York journal a writer
suggests the propriety of erecting a

The name of lion. Clark Howell
has been fixed upon by citizens of
Fulton county as one of those who
must represent them in the legisla
ture. In the now practically cer

will probably be canvassed for for
the speakership. He would tit that
station well, too, as he is a young
man of wonderful intellectual bal

The raising of what is know n as
the “elephant fund” in Atlanta was
a laudable undertaking dud the
scene of numerous little tots circu
lating among grown up friends, by
their smiles and cunning collecting
up the quarters, was by no means a
surprising one to those knowing
Atlanta. Atlanta’s youngsters will
get there in all they design, as they
are built by the same patterns as
their elders.
The several industrial institu
tions about Cartersville are Nour
ishing nicely, generally earning
fair profits on the capital invested
in them. This shows that there is
room for still others of dilferent
kinds. For some time the mercan
tile business has been crowded and
to see capital seeking investment
to a liberal extent in other lines
in our midst is one of the most
boxful signs of the times.

SOME KIM) WORDS.
Cartersville a City of Hospitable and
Elegant Homes.
[W. S. C. ill Cedartown Standard.]
The good people of Cartersville
entertained the conference in a
manner in keeping with their well
deserved reputation for hospitality,
and every delegate was loud in his
praise of the splendid reception
given the conference by this city.
Cartersville is a city of hospitable
and elegant homes, and she never
fails to emphasize her welcome to
guests of the city.
We were assigned to the care of
Colonel and Mrs. John W. Akin on
Market street, and our entertain
ment was truly delightful. This
household is one of the most cul
tured and charming in that city,
and no one ever crosses its thresh
old hut that he goes away surfeited
with its welcome and refined hos
pitality. During our brief stay in
Cartersville, we accepted the cour
tesies of Mr. Him Munford, Judge
Wikle and Colonel Bob Jones, and
in every home the grace of enter
tainment and the charm of genuine
welcome betokened the grace of
unstudied hospitality that abounds
in the typical southern home. Car
tersville is essentially a city of
homes, and across the lintel of every
household is written, “Welcome to
strangers,” and on every heartli
sparkles the glow of hospitality to
guests.
The Cartersville Land and Im
provement company conducted a
sale of property Thursday and Fri
day, and sold something like $50,-
000 of real estate. Dirt went down
under the auctioneer’s hammer at
stiff figures, and on Slain street
within two hundred yards of the
depot, it reached st 7 per front foot.
This city is on the verge of re
newed prosperity, and is destined ,
to take its rank in the forefront of i
southern industrial towns.
Two Handsome Homes
Jddge J. 31. Neel and Mnj. A. 31.
Foute have for some time owned
j very desirable building lots adjoin
i ing each other, on South avenue.
I They are high, commanding an ad
i mirahle view, and are really about
the most desirable of any on that
beautiful and popular thoroughfare.
These gentlemen have both been
contemplating erecting homes on
these lots and each knowing the
other’s intentions, they mutually
decided on the happy idea of put
ting up structures practically alike
and of like cost. With beautiful
designs from architects they will
bo built at once; the contracts have
been let to Messrs. J. E. and Harris
Hall, each residence to cost $3,000.
When finished they will be quite
imposing and will add much to the
looks and importance of that por
tion of the city.
Storm at Piedmont.
A correspondent at Piedmont,
Ala., writes the Courant-Amoriean
that at 1.90 on the afternoon of
Monday then* was quite a storm
which blew down a three story
brick hank building, which was
nearing completion, wounding ser
iously, one white and one colored
man, who were on the very top of
the building. It was said to he one
of the nicest bank buildings in the
state of Alabama. Estimate dam
aged Is from eight to ten thousand
dollars; no other serious damage
heard of.
