THERE WAS NO DUEL
Between Capt. Lyons and Mr.
Woolley.
An Invitation to Go Out of Hip Stulc l
Declined— The Captain Talks to a Jour
nal Stan—Somethin* More to Follow.
| Atlanta Evening Journal, June 26.|
There was go duel between ('apt.
Tom Lyons and Mr. A. F. Woolley.
An invitation was extended Mr.
Woolley to meet Captain Lyons out
of tin* state to conclude the corres
pondence, but was refused, which
may probably lead to some sensa
tional developments.
Captain Lyons arrived in Atlanta
this morning, and has seen shortly
afterwards hy a Journal reporter.
When requested to give the par
ticulars of the trouble between him
self and Mr. Woolley, Capt. Lyons
said: , , . ~
“1 am not prepared to give the
entire correspondents between Mr.
Woolley and myself, as lr. John
W Nelms, who acted for me, is at
his home in West End in bed suffer
ing intense pain from a severe inju
ry he received Monday morning
wliile trying to hoard tlie Western
and Atlantic train at Simpson street
crossing to escape aroest. I hope
in a few days that he will be m a
conditio 1 to give the entire corres
pondence to the public. Woolley
declined to give me satisfaction
without assigning any reason for
refusing to do so. This is about all
I can say at present.”
It is understood that ( apt. Lyons
telegraphed for Dr. Nelms as soon
as he saw the card published by
Mr Woolley on Sunday. Dr. Nelms,
for fear of being arrested, went to
Simpson street crossing to catch
the train. He sent word to thecon
ductor to slow up at the crossing
enough for him to got aboard, but
an officer of the road who saw the
doctor’s request, ordered the con
ductor to pass the crossing without
slowing up. When the train rolled
hy, Dr. Nelms attempted to get
atioard, hut was thrown to the
ground, causing a painful injury to
his hand. -
He did not arrive at Cartersville
until the next train; so the corres
pondence was given to Dr. Johnson
hy Captain Lyons, and then the
captain went to Chattanooga and
registered at the Keade house under
an assumed name.
Mr. Woolley failed to meet him
and he returned to Georgia.
Captain Lyons will most probably
publish a card denouncing Mr.
Woolley and then some further de
velopments may be looked for.

That is What the Aggregate Amount of
the City’s Assessments Shows.
*1,01X5,550!
That is the assessed valuation of
Cartersville real estate this year.
And it is an increase of *1X5,785
over last year’s property assessment.
This increase represents real and
genuine improvement. Property is
this year assessed about the same
as last, of course there are some
changes from last year’s valuations,
isome properties being assessed
higher while others are lower. It
will all average up about the same.
Major Win. Milner and Mr. J. C.
Wofford have been busy for the
past two or three weeks making
the assessments and completed
their work late yesterday afternoon.
An interesting item is that the
valuation of the property of the col
ored people is *17,5570. This Is the
first, time the property of the colored
people lias been separated from
that of the whites and it makes a
gratifying showing for the thrift
and prosperity of that race.
Said Mr. Wofford to a Courant-
Ameriean reporter: “The increase
over last year’s aggregate value is
owing to actual improvements
made. No one, unless making a
very careful investigation, would
know how much Cartersville has
progressed in the past twelve
months.”
Developments of the past week
are such as to warrant the assu
rance that there will he no federal
election law passed hy congress.
It is well that there is a controlling
element in the republican party,
even, who believe they could not
afford to see earpetbaggism re-estab
lished in the southern states.
This from our contemporary at
Acworth, the Post, is signitiicant:
“The ‘guess who’ column will he
discontinued hereafter, also the lo
cal correspondents that have been
running a budget of foolishness.
Correspondents will please send us
the news, and local items and not
so much foolishness.”
