WASHINGTON NEWS.
(From onr Regular Uorreepoodent.)
Washington, Dec. 15, 1899.
Mr. McKinley isn’t satisfied with
bossing Congress; he intends to
boss the whole republican shooting
match. For some reason he has
soured on Boss Platt’s little scheme
of making Gov. Teddy Roosevelt
the Vice Presidential candidate, and
he took occasion to tel! the mem
bers of the Republican National
committee, which met in Washing
ton today to choose the time and
place for the next republican nat
ional convention, that Secretary
Root would be nominated on his
ticket. Boss Platt tries to make it
appear that he means it when he
says that Root’s nomination for
Vice President will be entirely sat
isfactory to him. Now, that it has
become known that Mr. Root is Mr.
McKinley’s candidate the thick and
thin worshippers at the McKinley
shrine are falling into line and the
Root bqom is growing accordingly.
Senator Allen, who has been ap
pointed by the governor of Nebras
ka to fill the vacancy left by the
death of the late Senator Hayward,
will be warmly welcomed as a
staunch and valuable recruit to the
ranks of the anti-gold standard Sen
ators, who are preparing for a long
and hard fight in the Senate against
the gold standard bill, which Mr.
McKinley has found it so easy to
jam through the House.
The republican speeches, in the
house, this week, have contained
lots of gush about “republican pros
perity” and “sound money,” but
very little praise of any portion of
the gold staudard bill, which will,
if it becomes a law, put the con
trol of the finances of the country
ill the hands of the bankers, enabl
ing them to contract or expand the
amount of money in circulation at
will.

enough gold in the world to do the
business of the world, and declared
that the importation of gold to pay
for the surplus crops exported to
supply the failure of crops abroad
had quickened trade and pioduced
the prosperity of which the repub
licans boasted, and warned the re
publicans that when the stock of j
gold declined, as he believed it was !
bound to do, the prosperity of to
dgy would crumble like a house of
cards. Represenative Sims, of
Term., in his speech against the
| gold bill, called attention to a very
important fact that while wages did
: not average more than 10 per cent
' above the panic level, the price of
manufactured goods had increased
! 100 per cent.
Mr. Quay is in Washington,
making a personal ftppeal to sena
tors to vote to seat him on the-gov
ernor’s credentials. It is said that
if he does not receive assurances
from a sufficient number of sena
tors to make it absolutely certain
that he will be seated, he intends
to withdraw his application and
' credentials, but. there, is a doubt as
to whether he could' withdravy
them. J

Considering Proposition to Buy
Danish West Indies.
Washington, Dec. 18. —The offer
of Denmark to' sell the Danish
West Indies to the United States
will be discussed by the cabinet
Tuesday.
The proposition is entertained fa
vorably by prominent officials in
the navy and state departments j
and in the senate.
It is likely the president will
send to congress the terms of the
offer and other incidents thereunto,
as they have been reduced to for
malities by the state department.
It is understood the state depart
ment has ordered Ambassador
Choate to obtain from the Danish
government the data necessary for
the president to send to the sen
ate.
The proposition that the United
States should control the Danish
West Indies is an-old one. It an
tedates the Civil War, but was r -
newed soon after by President
Grant. The project was revived
at the outbreak of the War with
Spain. Secretary of the Navv
Long, speaking of the revived
scheme tonight, says:
“I am in favor of the purchase
of the islands I do not know
anything yet about the terms, and 1
do not care to discuss that phase
of the report. I presume the sale

'‘ More haute, lean spaed,” and
slowly,” are proverbs born
of experience that some things can’t
be hurried without loss and waste,
That is specially true of eating.
The railway lunch habit, ‘ five min

most disastrous to the health. You
may hurry your eating. You
can’t hurry your digestion, and the
neglect to allow proper time for
this important function is the
beginning of sorrows to im n >
a busy man. When the tongue is
foul, the head aches, when there are
sour or bitter risings, undue fullness
after eating, hot flushes, irritability,
nervousness, irresolution, cold ex

symptoms, he sure the stomach ami

Georgia House Wants Them Bar
red From the State.
Atlanta, Dec. n.—The lower
house of the general assembly to
day adopted the following resolu
tion :
“Resolved, by the house of iep
resentatives, the senateeoneurring,
That the senators and congressmen
from Georgia he requested to in
troduce and support a bill authoriz
ing the state of Georgia to enact
legislation looking to the preven
tion of the importation of cigarettes
ut) ihe state.”
Under the ruling of the federal
court, the passage of the Howard
bitl, which has been pending be
fore the house, would have stop
ped the manufacture of cigarettes
in this state, but under the inter
state commerce law they could
have been brought to Georgia
from other states.
