DOG LAW IN WALKER.
The Various Views of the People of
That County.
The last issue of the Walker
County Messenger contained five
columns of matter on the dog law
from as many correspondents.
On the view point of the question
nearly all differ and some of the
communications are unique. But
they all agree in the main essential
—they oppose it. One writer says
he has talked to a large number
of people and found only two or
three who favored it in its present
shape.
One man hits the nail squarely
on the head in the following lan
guage:
“I have no objection to a dog law
in a reasonable shape, but I do
think the shape of this dog lavv is
in is very objectionable and if I
were the grand jury I would op
pose it until it was in better shape.
“And why not the legislature
take the responsibility of the dog
law on themselves ? What is the
use of putting it on the grand jury?
“I do not think it is necessary to
have all this trouble to get a little
tax out of a man for his dog. Let
him give in his dog to the tax
receiver and pay for him like on
other property and not have any
expense about it.”
He observes further along most
siugificantly that “a constable go
ing around killing dogs would need
a bodv guard.”
Another man says: “I wish ev
ery poor man, woman and child
would read it and think well over
it and if it don’t stop their way
they should stop voting for men
that will pass a law and then refer
it to twenty-three men to say
whether it shall be a law or not.
If they have a right to tax the dogs
why didn’t they do it ? No, they
were afraid the people would con
demn them and if I was the grand
jury I would ignore the whole thing.
Why did they not refer it to the
people where it belongs?”
“A fox hunter” cert, inly takes a
unique view of the matter and sets
forth in the following striking man
ner:
‘‘Now suppose you kill all the
dogs in Georgia, not have any in
the next five yeais, you will be
sending to Tennessee or some other
state for a man to come and catch
the fox and ’possum, for the fox
will eat your lambs and pigs and
Mr. ’Possum will catch all your
chickens. Now which will be worth
the most to Walker county sheep
or fowls of all descriptions? Now
if you do away with the dogs you
will have to do away with the cack
ling tribe, but I will say right here
that there are worthless dogs and
many of them ought to be killed.
"Now, if the legislature had
passed a law lo kill every dog but
the hounds, bird dog and shepherd,
they would have hit the nail on the
head.”
Yqt another writer thought the
law would be all right if one dog
was exempt for fcach family and
thinks everybody needs one dog at
least. He says:
“And then the poor constables!
It -will make their lives more dan
gerous than fighting the Boers in
South Africa. What man will go
around killing his neighbor s dog
just simply because lie does not
think it light to pay tax on him ?
You won’t find oue man in a hun
dred who would do it. Who would
be a dog pelter ? His office is a
very unpleasant position to fill any
way, and sometimes very danger
ous without haying the dog lavv to
contend with. But let a constable
start out in this country to killing
people's dogs and his life would
not be as long as that of a canary
bird.”

and are forced to submit to a cruel and dangerous
operation—the only treatment which the doctors know for Cancer. The disease
promptly returns, however, and is even more violent and destructive than
before. Cancer is a deadly poison in the blood, and an operation, plaster, or
other external treatment can have no effect, whatever upon it The cure must
come from within—the last vestige of poison must be eradicated.
eMr. Wm Walpole, of Walsh town S. D , says: ‘‘A
