Gil BAKER’S BILLS
TURNED DOWN.
Heated Discussion Over Them in
the Senate.
BILLS REPORTED ADVERSELY.
Dr. Baker Makes a Speech of Half
Hour—Dispensary na School
Tax Bills Are Killed.
Atlanta Constitution.
Senator Baker brought about a
vigorous and heated fight over two
bills of his that had been reported
adversely by the committees.
Senator Baker accused the mem
bers of the committee of turning
down his bills because of personal
dislike they had for him, and he
had his fighting clothes on when
the matters came up yesterday.
The first was a bill by the senator
seeking to amend the law levying
a direct ad valorem tax for educa
tional purposes. This was the bill
that contemplated the closing of i
the common schools for one year. '
Senator Baker made a vigorous 1
speech in favor of the bill, which
occupied about thirty minutes. On
a vote was the only member
voting fgahiftt the adyerse report
of the committee.
At the close of his speech Seti£-
tor Holder moved that all speeches
'against the adverse reports Of com
mittees be limited to ten minutes.
Senator Baker took the motion as
a direct hit at him and remarked:
‘That is some more law intended'
for me,"
The motion prevailed, however,
afnl then Senator Holder moved to
allow Senator Baker to talk torty
five minutes on the next bill of his
that was adversely reported.
The adverse report of the com
mittee was then read on Senator
Baker's bill calling for au election
in Cartersville to let the people de
termine whether or not they want
ed a dispensary.
It was in the debate that follow
ed that feeling ran high between
the senators, and it took the best
efforts ot the president and disin
terested senators to keep the feel
ing down.
Senator Baker was the first to
speak and he declared that he had
beeil treated outrageously in the
matter; that it was his city and
his county and that the committee
simply turned his bill down be
cause they did not like him. He
stated that in his haud he held a
petition w th nearly three hundred
names on it asking for the election.
At this point Senator Swift arose
and said that about half the names
on the petition were negroes. This
Senator B. ker denied with feeling.
He was then asked if some of those
on the petition were not convicts.
To this he replied that he did not
know.
The argument of Senator Baker
whs based on the idea that a large
part of the best people in his coun
ty wanted the election and that as
he represented them the senate
should give it to them. He said
that he made his race for the sen
ate on the issue and that if the
peopple did not want it they would
not have elected him.
Senator Baker's position was

vigorously assailed by Senators
Smith and Holder, who attempted
to show that the senator from Car
tersville had promised the people
that he would not bring up such a
measure as the one he advocated.
They attempted to read from a
newspaper article written by Sena
tor Baker in which he said that
such a measure as he advocated
could not be introduced in the
senate.
On a vote to adopt the report of
the committee, which resulted in
the death of the bill, the ayes and
nays were called for and the report
was adopted.
Tiie next bill adversely reported
was another from Senator Baker
seeking to amend the charter of
Cartersville, and Senator Baker
asked to have it re referred to the
committee with the remark:
“I would like to have it sent
back to the committee, that is, un
less you fellows just want to run
everything in my county.” The
matter was recommitted.
TWO BIT THE DUST.
Killed a Doctor in Altercation Over
Sale of Furniture.
Panther, W. Va., Dee. 6. —Dr.
Thompson, of Williamsport, Pa.,
and Adam Bailey, of this place,
were instantly killed last night by
James H. Chambers, a prominent
merchant of this place. The kill
ings were the outcome of a sale of
furniture by Dr. Thompson to
Chambers. When settleing the
deal last night he and Chambers
engaged in an argument and then
came to blows. Chambers ordered
the doctor to leave his store. The,
latter did So, but returned soon af
terward, carrying a revolver. He
told Chattlbefs as he came into the
store that one of the two must die.
Chambers was prepared for any
emergency and witnout raising
from his chair, fired and the doc
tor fell. He arose quickly, how
ever, and sprang out of the door
way, shooting back over his shoul
der as he did so. He had not
walked three steps oil the street
until he fell again and a minute
later was dead.
Adam Bailey, a former business
i partner of Chambers was coining
: up the street, heard the shots and
saw the doctor fall. He was an
. intimate friend of the doctor.
Rushing into the store. Baily pull
ed his revolver. He leaped over
j the corpse of Dr. Thompson to get
j into the store. “That was a cow
ardly murder,” cried Baily to
Chambers, “and you will have to
kill me or I will kill you.”
No sooner were the words utter
ed by Baily th in Chambers, who
already had a double-barreled
shotgun lying across the counter
in frout of him, raised the weapon
and fired. The contents entered
Bailey’s breast, completely pene
trating his body, making a hole
large enough to drop an egg
through. He fell in the store, but
Chambers dragged the body out
ride and laid it beside that of Dr.
Thompson. They lay in the street
until after midnight, when a cor
oner’s inquest was held. A crowd
had gathered and Chambers imme
diately surrendered.
At his preliminary trial today he
was acquitted. Chambers is a
! brother of Judge Chambers, of this
judicial circuit, and is one of the
best known men of this county.
Baily until recently was a saloon
keeper. He has been an enemy of
1 Chambers ever since they were
partners‘in •business.
OLD FASHIONED
•^CORNER.
What a time Mr. Adams, ot Put
nam, lias had with the “Manish
Woman” and her replies, for I
presume only those who were
guilty of the encomiums he heaped
upon them cared to reply.
He has had his laugh, and his
chuckles have not yet ceased. He
threw a bomb in the camp several
i weeks ago and the report echoes
till now. The papers have sent re
porters after him, their columns
j open and anxious for another word
from his sciutilating pen, but no,
! lie refuses. He wou'd not destroy
the effect of his first effort for his
best pointer dog. The fun he has
had will last him until the Christ
mas holidays, and let us hope no
deadly machine or dynamite bomb
| will be put in his Christmas stock
ing.
I see with pleasure the fight still
going on for little children in fac
tories, and I hope the good men of
our country will devise some plan
by which their condition can be
bettered. I am one woman who
is willing to trust this old ship of
state to the men.
God has given us a grand and
glorious country, with compara
tively good laws for its protection
and I stand to it, the men of today
are just as wise, as discreet, as
brave and true as the men who
fought the bloody battles of the
revolution, or framed the constitu
tion which is the glory of every
true American.
The “Kings Daughters” are
pretty well assured of getting their
home for "Incurables” in Atlanta,
and they are going at it in the
right w-ay. The physicians all will
lend their personal influence, as j
the incurables or “chronic alcohol-1
ics” are . >t admitted to the city j
hjspical. The ladies in a quiet!
manner have applied for a charter !
and members of a committee will 1
g > before the new city council and
ask for an appropriation for a
building. And they will get it.
Its all in the way you work the
men.
The young ladies will have a
bazaar, and soon all necessary funds
will lie forthcoming, and of course
the men will have to foot the bills.
We all know the Lords of creation
can be angled and tolled and led,
but few are gotten theie by force
or whip or spur.
I see by today’s paper an Amer
ican girl, Miss Finck, of New
York, an heiress, has broken her
engagement with Baron Yon Stec
how rather than cross the ocean
and meet him in Berlin to be mar
ried It seems as if the ceremony
was to have been in New York,
but business engagements were so
pressing Baron Von could not
come to attend his own wedding
and begged his affianced to run
over to Europe as an accommoda
tion, you might say, to which she,
in true American style replied that
he might "go to grass,” or words
with same meaning, and the en
gagement is now called off. I say,
bravo, for one true American girl
who had some pride of character
and country left. This "open
armed” policy of the many last
year’s brides, who for a title or a
pedigree east their millions at the
feet of these spendthrifts is cer
tainly to be deplored.
It does seem in this great free
country of ours, there are true
hearts, handsome faces and manly
forms, favored enough to inspire
love in any fair maiden’s breast,
and then, what an acqu'dtion to
our dear old land to keep her mil
lions wrought from hei virgin soil
to develop her own wonderful re
sources.
But every one to their own no
tion, in love above all else. As
the old ladys said when she smack
ed her Jersey cow. Thus the old
adage goes.
