The King in his royal palace Or the newly pardoned felon, Aren’t happy as a little nix With a nickel watermelon. What about a city park? This section has been visited by re freshing rains this week. Th“ Sam Jones Tabernacle meeting be gins on Friday, September 14th. Passenger traffic on our railroads con tinues quite lively for the season. Therein some talk of an independent t tmlidate for the State Senate in this district. Harmony Grove and Pine Log camp meetings drew many people from this city last Sunday. Merchants who look for a lively fall trade should soon [trowed to place their Till advertisements in their local [taper. Mr. Warren White is having his two cottages on Leake street treated to a coat of paint in modern and tasty tints. West End Institute is moving off with tie* fall term handsomely. We congratu late the teachers on the auspicious open ing. Kev. H. J. Adams writes the Coukant- Amckican from Mineral Bluff, that he will return to Cartersville on Friday, and preach next Sunday morning and night. Mr. Frank Stephens is having his house on Douglas street, occupied by Mr. Wal ker Alley, treated to several coats of paint, much to the improvement of its appearance. Avery desirable home, ten minutes' walk from the business centre, five-room cottage, two acre lot, splendid oak groves, etc., for sale at big bargain. Ap ply at this office. Monday morning Prof. Lee and his able corps of assistants were greeted by a goodly number of the children, and next Monday there will be a much larger number. This splendid school well de serves the liberal patronage it receives. Cartersville is on a big boom. She is busily engaged now in putting up her furnaces, waterworks, gas works, etc. The ( ofkant-Amehican is now trying to induce the people to put up a cotton factory at once, and it will likely be done. —Canton Advance. Cartersville is tlit* “progress center” of ( ; w)i-pa. Look out, for she promises to coin him* Birmingham's boom, minus its fictitious valuations, with Atlanta’s solidity and substantial progress, and Chattanooga's plucky and successful business daring.—Kemiesaw Gazette. While building furnaces, dwellings, store houses, waterworks, gas works and factories, let us not forget a city park. -Now, while land is cheap, is the time to move in this matter. The man who does most towards giving our city a commo dious park, will be called blessed by fu ture generations. The Courant-AMErican establishment "as honored by a visit from a bevy of interesting girls from West End Insti tute, in charge of Mrs. Harris, who had arranged for her students to see our steam printing presses in motion. The young Indies thoroughly investigated the modus operandi, and seemed to be delighted and interested. We overheard a town darkey directing a dull-witted lad of his own color from the country the other day. “You know where Mr. Wofford lives, don’t you?" • No," replied the lad. “You know, den, where Mr. Graham lives?” “No.” Be coming a little vexed at the absence of comprehension, the questioner again asked: “You know where de court house >•*?" “Yes.” “Wei, it right dar yit.” Maj. Foute, of this city, tells us that will propose two or three important amendments to our State constitution, should he be elected to the next Lcgisla_ fare. He favors a change in the plan of selecting our judges and solicitors; and also a change in the election of Senators, as to have a number of Senators Hold °ver from one Legislature to another. A\e think there is a large field for im i rovement in both these points. The announcement of Judge J. A. How. aul will be found under the proper head. After a faithful service of twenty-four years, as ordinary, he proposes to con tinue in service, if his fellow-citizens so desire. He is certainly well qualified, by long experience, to serve the people effi ciently, and a large number of good friends will exert themselves to keep him in office. Our long dealing with him in his official capacity has always been of the most pleasant and satisfactory char acter. * I)r. R. B. Headden, of Rome, preached at the Baptist church here last Sunday morning and evening, much to the de light of his many friends and admirers. J. I\ Jones, one of our livest mer chants, leaves for the Eastern markets to-day to lay in a mammoth fall stock of goods. Maj. A. M. Foute’s name is announced in this issue of our paper as a candidate for re-election to the house of represen tatives. He needs no introduction to our readers. He was one of the most useful members of the last house, and is better able to do good service now than before, because of his experience. Bar tow county honors herself when she honors such men as Maj. Foute. Mr. W. H. Sadler, of this city, is in possession of two family heirlooms that he prizes very highly, and which possess a historic value. One of these is a walnut dining table and the other a walking cane, belonging to and used by his great great-grandfather, Col. Bratton, one of South Carolina’s heroes in the revolu tion, being the leading figure in the de feat of Huck, an event which helped largely to turn the tide of American for tune in that great struggle. They have been carefully preserved and show little abuse, considering their age, much over a hundred years. Bartow County Agricultural Society, at the State Convention at Newman last week, was represented by Capts. T. J. Lyon and A. F. Woolley, I)r. F. It. Cal houn and Mr. Thad Hawkins. Of Capt. Lyon, Mr. W. G. Whidby, one of the most acute observers and fairest report ers in the State, in his report for the At lanta Journal, says: “He is the orator of the convention, and he deals in sledge hammer blows. In an eloquent speech he said the farmers’ alliance would name the next Governor of Georgia. Several voices shouted ‘W. J. Northen,’ which was greeted by applause.” Cartersville, so favorably situated for the manufacture of iron, is receiving at tention from shrewd eastern capitalists. Close observers regard Cartersville as the best point in Georgia for iron furnaces— both for bituminous and charcoal, and for an iron mill Already has one fur nace been decided upon, to be built prin cipally with home capital, and another is highly probable. Also has Mr. Hiram Blaisdell, of Boston, arranged to erect gas works and supply Cartersville with gas; and waterworks will soon follow. Thus it is that the cities along the Western>& Atlantic Railroad thrive and grow.—Southern Industrial Record. We read that $200,000 has been sub scribed for a charcoal iron furnace to be erected at the new city of Bessemer, Ala. If a charcoal furnace can live in Besse mer it would make money “hand over fist” in Bartow county, near Cartersville, Ga. There is the finest of ore for char coal iron, (and probably ore will have to be shipped from Cartersville for the Bessemer furnace), sandstone, limestone and illimitable forests for the very best quality of charcoal, to be manufactured by any process; by the old proces laid down at the furnace at 4c. a bushel. Furnace men should investigate the ores and capabilities of Bartow’ county for turning out iron at a big profit.—South ern Industrial Record. A rather lively little shake-up occurred among the freights on the W. & A. at this point last Saturday night. It is the custom for quite a number of through freights to stop here about ten o’clock. Two sections, Nos. 2 and 3, were waiting on the switch when No. 4 through igno rance of the situation, or somehow, came up at a speed that caused the engine to run violently into the cab of No. 3, which drove the engine of the same train with force into No. 2. The smokestack of one of the engines was dislodged and both engines more or less damaged, the cabs were mashed in and injured and a number of the trucks torn from the cars. One train man asleep on a bunk in one of the cabs was thrown into the floor but not injured. It took some little time to get the track cleared. I>o Go to church. Trade at home. M. WilliuKham manager, propose to do a rushing business. Property placed into that company’s hands may be safely claimed as sold. They pro. pose to boom the interests of their customers as well as their own. PERSONAL MENTION. Dr. M. M. Puckett will go to Dalton to day, where lie will discuss and hear dis cussed general dental topics before the State Dental Association. Mr. I). J. Guyton returned home last Friday from a two weeks’ trip to Arkan sas, where he went, accompanied by his little son, to visit relatives. Mrs. J. A. Baker and Miss Annie Wad dell, of Cartersville, are spending a day or two in Rome. Miss Waddell is Bar tow county’s prettiest young lady.— Rome Tribune. Col. \\. H. Hidell, of Rome, one of North Georgia's brainiest citizens, enli vened our sanctum Friday with his pres ence. The Colonel is now enjoying a lu crative law practice and the confidence of many warm friends. Mr. and Mrs. D. Y\ . Rogers, of Renfroe, Ala., passed through this city a few days ago, bound for a ten days’ stay at Gow er’s Spring, near Gainesville. They were joined here on their pleasant journey by Miss Louise Calhoun, one of Carters ville’s loveliest young ladies. Mr. Hinton Helper was in our city sev eral days of the week past representing the interests of the Baltimore Manufac turers’ Record. He is one of the best known and most efficient correspondents in the South and by his pen has done much to aid Southern development and progress. Our friend, Henry Terrell, returned Saturday from an etxended Western tour, lie visited his father in Coleman county, Texas, and reports him doing finely. He is full of talk about the won derful progress of the great West, and promises to write up his trip for the Cou BA NT-A M E UIC AN. Mr. V. 11. Heath, of Rockwood, Tenn., was circulating among his many Bartow county friends last week. He is at pres ent engaged with the furnace at Rock wood, and will continue to make his home there, but he expressed himself ns highly gratified at the improvements vis ible since he was here and the general grand prospects of Cartersville. From the Parsonage. Brownwood, Ga. The Swift Specific Cos., Atlanta, Ga.; Gentlemen—This [>ast summer my wife was away on a two month’s visit. On her return home she had a wretched cold, which, growing worse, caused me to call in a physician. He attented her several weeks without benefiting her. She, know ing the splendid effect S. S. S. had on me determined to test it in her case. At that time she had copious and disa greeable discharges from the left nostril. Before the first bottle of S.S. S. was used up she was much better, and a few addi tional bottles set her all right. It is remarkable that S. S. S. is good for colds and sore throats. A few months ago, I was troubled occasionally with my throat from preaching. 1 car ried a bottle of Swift’s Specific with -me on the circuit. Whenever mv throat be came irritated and annoyed me I would take a dose of S. 8. S. just before retir ing, and on awakening I would be well. Rev. Joseph 0. Langston.
