Big fun, at the spelling bee Friday
night.
A special to the CoiiKtitution from
Home, says:
Cartersville is the boss cotton market
of Bussection.
Mrs. .John W. Akin left yesterday on a
visit to relatives at Charleston.
Hob Kirkpatrick, after a tough little
spell of sickness, is on his feet again.
The shingles are on tlie ground for
putting anew roof on the Methodist
elm reh.
Mr. Znneri Jackson returned home Fri
day last from si business visit of a week’s
extent to La Fayette, Ga.
The spelling bee is given for the benefit
of the poor. Help them by attending,
and enjoy the fun besides.
The walking cane fakir held forth again
on she square east of the depot last
Saturday, attracting his usual crowd.
The people do not endorse the verdict
of the Eddleman jury, but everybody
endorses Burton’s hand-made harness.
Miss Eda Sands, after spending several
days with friends in the city, returned to
her Inane in Orlando, Fla.. Monday last.
Thu melancholy days have come,
Of ail the year the saddest,
When coal dealers wear fh *ir sweetest smiles
And ice men are the maddest.
Former.-can get the lull market price
for their cotton fit Cartersville, and save
all the warehouse and other charges in
other places.
Col. I). B. Freeman, of that sterling
weekly, the Cou rant-American, of Car
tersville, Ga., spent yesterday in the city,
—Rome Tribune.
Frank Watkins says ha is all right on
tin* tariff question and if elected for
justi -a of the peace, which he expects to
he b.v a handsome majority, he will
marry everybody free of charge.
I'M i tor Freeman, of the Cartersville
Couuant American, was in the city to
day. It is not threadbare platitude to
*ny that his is one of the finest weekly
newspapers in the State. —Rome Herald.
Dr. E. H. Richardson, of Cedartown,
was in the city Tuesday, and attended
the sales, being an interested party in
the commissioners” sale of the property
of the iv E. Jones estate in this county.
Mr. isarel Davis, who lives near the
line of Polk, was m Cartersville at the
*ale of lands Tuesday, He paid taxes
on 11,000 acres last year, and why he
want s more is the enigma of the season.
Tv ' of Cartersville's skillful marks
man, John Wikle and Charlie Wilkes,
w*\i; down the East & West hunting last
week. They spent two or three days
around Stilesboro and nagged ninety
quails.
The Couhaxt-American is never sur
prised atany good words it hears about
br Headden. He is one of the brightest
and best of the many men sent out by
glorious old Bartow county to adorn the
professions in other counties.
Hugh Young, of this city, has been ap
pointed mail agent on the W. & A rail
road, vice C. M. D. Brown, removed.
Hugh is one of our most popular and
capable young men, and will prove an
efficient man in his new position.
Any gentleman or lady, boy or girl,
who will spell with the spelling bee on
Friday night is cordially invited to do
s o, whether you have been asked per
sonally or not, as it is impossible for the
committee to see each one personally.
Major John O. Waddell and Mr. R. T.
Poole, of Cedartown, passed through the
city last Saturday on their way to Macon
to attend the State Fair. They had in
charge Polk's exhibit of minerals, which
H p
they represented as beingquite creditable.
Rev. W. If. Cooper, of this city, is con
ducting a meeting at Adairisville, from
which we have most gratifying reports.
Many have been converted, the meetings
arc largely attended, un 1 great good is
being done, for which all good people will
be thankful.
The election is over—-now for the spell
ing bee—Opera House Friday night.
The pretty Cartersville Couraxt-
American has reduced its subscription
ju ice from $1.50 to SI.OO per annum.
This makes the Couraxt-American one
of the cheapest as well as neatest and
newsiest exchanges on our table.—Cedar
town Standard.
The two large sycamore trees in front
ot Baker A Hall's new building, on the
corner of Railroad and Market streets,
have been cut down ; and we hear some
talk in favor of removing all the trees in
front ot business blocks—for the reason
that it’s not city-like, you know.
An old darkey from the country was
slightly hurt at the depot last Thursday
while removing a bale of cotton from his
wagon. He lost his balance and the bale
wonld have fallen on him if some other
hands had notcaughtit. He was knocked
against the platform and his head some
what bruised.
Rev. Dr. R. 1). Headden, of the First Bap
tist church, yesterday celebiated the fifth
anniversary of his pastorate. A large
congregation greeted him, and he
preached a sermon of great force and
eloquence. I)r. Headden is universally
popular, not only with his own denomi
nation, but all classes of our people.
Cartersviile is already a long ways
ahead in her cotton receipts. We have
received nearly two hundred bales more
than we had up to this date last year,
notwithstanding the fact that the crop
is shorter and began coming in nearly
three weeks later than last year. This is
a good showing, and indicates the grow
ing importance of our city as a trade
centre.
Be sure that you attend the spelling
bee at the court house* Friday night.
Lets have some fun in recalling our child
hood struggles with the old blue-back
speller, which is the only book to be used
on the occasion. Only ten cents admis
sion and we promise you that you will
receive at least the worth of your money
in genuine fun. besides aiding the blessed
cause of charity.
A handsome compliment has just been
paid tooneofCartersville’s brightest and
most lovely young ladies in Cleveland,
Tenn. Miss Annie Laurie Jones, who is
attending college there has been made
editress of her college jaj>er, a handsome
one that is bound to sparkle under the
management of the clever' a.nd bright
young lady at the helm. Her many
friends and admirers are happy to hear
of her achievements
Co 1 . Z. B. Hargrove, of Rome, (little
Zacli), ]>ut in appearance here Friday to
lay his claims for Congressional honors
before an anxious public. The appoin
ted hour arrived whe t he was to begin
his talk, but the crowd was missing.
Nine old gray-headed darkeys and three
white men was the assemblage that
gteeted his presence. He concluded to
preserve his little peroration for some
more appreciative locality.
The Farmers' Improvement and Sav
ings Association should be fostered and
encouraged l>v all the jieople of the
South. It was gotten up to afford form
ers financial relief, without placing them
selves at the mercy of foreign money
lenders. In towns and cities it operates
like the usual building and loan associa
tions—enabling working men of small
means to build homes and save rent.
Lewis Allen, colored,yesterday evening
had one ward too many. As the north
bound train of the W. & A. stopped at
the depot, on the platform of the second
class coach aj) pea red a six-year-old negro
girl. Some one said, “There is a child
wants to get off here.” Lewis instantly
seized the child and the train pulled out.
The child, whose parents were aboard
and were bound fora jioint farther north,
as soon as she recovered from the sur
prise incident to being snatched suddenly
from the train, sobbed : “I didn't want
to stop here, and I want my mamma,
too,” and began a boohooing that at
tracted much attention, and made Lewis
the butt of a joke he didn't begin to
relish. He was trying to pacify the
youngster when last seen, and trying at
the same time to decide what to do with
his charge.

A happy marriage was consummated
at the home of Capt. J. X. Dobbs, near
this city, on Tuesday morning last at
9:B() a. m., the contracting parties being
the Captain's beautiful and accomplished
daughter, Miss M. Janie Dobbs, and Mr.
S. T. Me Elroy, a most excellent young
gentleman, who is prominent among the
business men of Norcross, Ga. Rev. W.
H. Cooper, of this city, officiated. At
11:48 the happy couple took the south
bound W. & A. train for the home of the
groom.
Mrs. S, P. Jones gave the young folks
of the Juvenile Missionary Society, a
chrysanthemum party at her delightful
home on Thursday evening of last week,
which was largely attended, and a most
enjoyable affair. After much play and
devouring of nick nacks the subject of
missions was discussed, and good was
done. The purpose is to unite the young
folks, not only in the pleasures of life,
but in doing good. We looked in upon
the scene (about supper time) and enjoy
ed the occasion greatly.
