Have you registered? Now is the time to advertise. I jets’ have a hearty thanksgiving all the same. Cotton has been coming in lively again tins week. Travel on the railroads is, seemingly, rather light. ’Possum hunting is the order of the day with some folks. Capt. I>. W. K. Peacock and wife vis ited Atlanta this week. Keep cool when you talk polities. It doesn't pay to get excited. Rev Sam Jones is now engaged in a great meeting at Greenville, Miss. Von will always find that it pays to trade with the men who advertise. Very little .Cartersville money passed hands on the result of the election. The routing municipal contest is being talked and thought of considerably. Many workmen are taking a forced holiday on account of the bad weather. li ) * rumored that a regular Sunday train is to be put on the Past and West. Yesterday was a raw one, but we can’t expect all good weather at this seison. Public schools would be worth more to Cartersville than auotlie- fifty ton iron furnace. Cartersville should inaugurate the new year with a first class public school system. A little singular, that right after the spelling bee should come such a chill spell of weather. It {:•> rumored that some gentlemen will wear their last winter’s overcoats this season. Misses Cula Whitehead and Anna Cobb P smait a tew day last week in Marietta, visiting: friends. Vis'tors from the city go out often to inspect the preliminary work being done at the furnace grounds. A number of Gilmer county wagons, with clmstnuts, apples and cabbage, have been in the city this week. Remember, you must register before hand, if you would vote in the coming city and county elections. Only one dollar a year for the Courant- Ammuu an and the American Farmer, the leading agricultural paper of the country. Cartersville should have public schools. In this progressive age, a city without public schools, is considered behind the tinn*N. New subscribers to the ( olrant-Amer ican are coming iu rapidly. Atone dol lar a year it is the cheapest paper in the State*., We learn that the work of the erection of the building for the malleable iron fur nace at Emerson was begun Tuesday morniug. Conductor John Cobb don’t give a snap if Harrison is elected, since that pair of liouocing twins arrived last Sun day night. The candidates for county offices are beginning to warm up to their work, and wc expect to see some close contests for these positions. The spider legged dude should pause in his follies and take warning. A young man broke his leg in pulling off a tight boot recently. Quite a number went down to Atlanta the first of the week to help their friends in their races for positions to be tilled by the 1 legislature. The children of the Juvenile Missionary Society had another delightful gather ing at the residence of Rev. Sam Jones last Tue-da.v evening. Our ministers should each preach a sermon from the text: “Oh !ye of little faith,’ apply it to material things, and aim it at the croakers, There is not a vacant house in t arters ville, and twenty houses could be filled with new settlers in a mouth. Enter prising men should go to building. The serial now running in the Courant- I Ame bican, is the best we have yet pub lished. We have a few back numbers on hand containing the first chapters. Our schools are doing finely. They could hardly do otherwise, with such a splendid corps of teachers iril each insti tution. We are proud of our schools. Cartersville should heartily encourage everything in the way of manufactures. Small manufacturing industries build up a city more rapidly than anything else. Immense quantities of hay have been saved by our farmers this year, but not half as much as we should make. liar tow county could easily sell three times us much as she does. We understand that Mr. YY . G. Mark ham, formerly of the Georgia Pacific Hotel, of Tallapoosa, is to take hold >t the new hotel at Emerson. He will keep a good house if he does. The spelling bee last week was a deci ded hit, and the Ladies’ Relief Society has decided to have another one about the first or second week in next month, with an oyster supper attachment. Give theCouRANT-AMEBicAN office your orders for job printing. Thus benefit | yourself by getting good work at city prices right at yoiir door; benefit the community by keeping your money at home. The affairs of the East & West railroad are moving along like clock work under | the able management of Gol. C. P. Pall A more thoroughly equipped man could i not have been found for this responsible position. The ladies couldn’t get Pill Arp into ' the spelling bee, though they tried hard. He wasn’t willing to endanger his repu tation as the boss speller by entering the bee. Put itisto be hoped he will over come his native timidity sufficiently to ! enter the next one. The management of the E. & YY ■ has I ordered some changes in the arrange ment of the offices of head officials in the depot here. The general freight and pas senger agent’s quarters have been fitted up down stairs, and it is said another room is to be added to give adequate working room for the force. Several changes in location have oc curred among business firms on Main street. Air. J. R. Knight is moving his stock to Stamp Creek, Mr. Bennett is preparing to move his market to the ; “checker front” vacated by Mr. Knight, j and Mr. Walter White will move his stock ! of goods to Mr. Bennett’s present loca tion. Rome’s evening paper, the Herald, is ft bright, spicy, enterprising sheet, and is forging its way swiftly to the front rank of Georgia journalism. By the way, it is not amiss to say that the energetic young proprietors are Bartow countv raised boys—the Messrs. Tatum. Their friends in this county will rejoice at their success. In the coining election for county of ficers, don’t forget the “wool hat” candi date for sheriff, John T. Layton. He means business and is after the salary as well as the honors of the office. Stern ness in office but kindness to all worthy humanity, is his motto. dno. W. Coffin will be his deputy, and before such a team, evil-doers may well have their eyes peeled. Two negroes on Dr. Felton’s farm John Brown and Phil Robinson, one evening last week got into a difficulty when the latter shot the former three times. The balls took effect in an arm and leg and produced only slight wounds. Robinson came in to give himself up to the author ities, and when a warrant was about to be taken out, Brown refused to appear on it as prosecutor. A jug of whisky is thought to have been the fountainhead of the difficulty. The dwelling house of Haynes Milner, a colored blacksmith, situated on Carter street, was destroyed by fire Tuesday evening. The fire originated. it is thought, from a defective flue. The flames had gained such headway when the crowd attracted by the first alarm reached the spot that it was found im possible to save it. Some of the contents of the house were removed and saved. It took some lively work to save the house of Mason Thomas that was dan gerously close to the burned structure. A O VK J>. Sold only in cans. Royal Baking Powder Cos., 106 Wall St., N. Y. We notice that recently in a bee in At lanta “accordion” was spoiled with an “e” instead of “i.” The brain and finger toilers of the Courant-Amebicax estab lishment can say with truthfulness that they have been under a spell of accordion before the magnitude of which the Atlanta spell pales into sickliest insignificance, A*genial neighbor, a French gentleman from Jerusalem, with marvelously nliant muscles, manipulates a wheezing, whining machine six days in the week and about seven hours in the day. And still we live. It is generally conceded by thore who have given the matter thought, that in any claim for “betterments,” theauthori ties of the W. & A. railroad may make against the commonwealth, no item will occur covering expenditures on the depot at Cartersville. It is the same dingy, unsightly old structure it was twenty years ago with the addition of the weath er's effects for that space of time. The city council would hardly offend their constituency by asking leave and apply ing paint to the exterior. Some people are just as cross as a bear they snap your head of when you hap pen to open your mouth. We can not excuse them, for they have bad colds, which makes them irritable, and are too mean to buy a bottle of Dr. Bull’s Cough Syrup, which would restore their good nature. Hunnicutt Medicine Cos.: Gent'emen—My two-year old child had whooping cough in its severest form, and I ceuld find noth ng to relieve it until I procured a bottle of Hunnicutt's Throat and Lung Lure. After taking about one I'ourtii of same, the dear little one was cured completely, and has not had the slightest cough since. I have used the remainder of the bott e in my family since for colds and coughs, and in every in stance a cure wms affected, especially in my own case.
