Tin* Old Familiar Faros.
• I have had playmates, 1 have had compan
ions
In my days of childhood, in my joyful school
day,
—"All. all an* gone, the old familiar faces."
After reading those beautiful and ex
pressive lines by Charles Lamb, my
thoughts wandered baek to my own
youth-time, and the old familiar faces of
those halcyon days.
Ah! me, the many beautiful, intelligent
i res that rise up before me like a passing
panorama. First I see a bright, interest
ing girl, a companion of iny childhood,
not beautiful in form and feature, but
beautiful in her christain purity, kind
and gentle and helpful, always the first
at the bedside of suffering whispering
words of consolation to the distressed,
the first in deeds of charity, the first in
all good works, but by and by, wo all
grew up to wamanhood, and one day in
the sweet summer tins* when the birds
sang love songs all tha day, and the
flowers bloomed in rich luxuriousness, a
minister came and she put her hand in
liband promised to love him until “death
uh do part," and together they went
away to his home in Virginia to teach
wayward humanity the touching and
pathetic story of the cross.
And there was Jeanie, our Bonny Jean
wc called her, the most beautiful rose of
“I he rosebud garden of girls," her deli
cate flower face would light up with a
spiritual beauty, when animated, that no
word painting of mine can describe. She
ways always the most graceful m the
dance, the fairest at the play, and tin*
most brilliant in conversation.
Hon we all admired our charming, our
bewitching, our magnificent Bonny Jean;
of course many lovers whorshipped at
hershrine, but there was one more fa vored
than the rest, and he slipped a ring on
her finger with the word “Mispah” en
graved therein, but alas! the talismaipc
charm that is supposed to hover around
that little word was powerless to keep
another from coming between the lovers.
Ere long, Prince Charming came to
town, a gay young man with a high
sounding French name and a fine tenor
voice, and he was really an arbiter ele
gantiarum. and he fell in love with Bonny
•lean, and one night when the stars
twinkled knowingly at each other, and
fin' whippoorwills sang sad wailing mel
odies in the pine trees. Jeanie ran away
from tin' home of her childhood to the
minister's house and was married; how
fair and fickle and false.
As 1 sitthisevoning in thebright ruddy
glow of the fire light listening to the
sailing of the winds outside, me thinks 1
s" many many well remembered faces of
hygotie days.
‘ 0 host-like I paced round the haunts of my
childhood,
U n til seem'd a desert I was bound to traverse,
Seeking to tlml the old tamiliar fines.
Some they have died, and some they have left
me,
Ami some are taken from me; all are departed;
All, all are prone, the old familiar faces."

At*Xew Iberia and Abbeville, La., we
learn that the farmers are putting up
manlier bales of cotton than is t*<e usual
custom —a bale that one man can easily
handle. The opinion is steadily growing
that our cotton bales are too heavy and
clumsy and hefjee too unwieldy to han
dle with tin* ease that they should be.
V. bile it is probable that the entire char
acter of bagging material may change
in a short time—a cheaper and better
substitute being brought into general
use to replace jute—it is also likely that
the next important step to betaken in
the handling of cotton, may be to reduce
the size of the bales. —Southern Live i

Were it not for the constantly increas
ing demand in this country for diamonds
■ t is doubtful it they would preserve their
high value. In one year the diamonds
taken from South Africa alone were
valued at #5,000,000. One of the puz
zling ouestions is what becomes of all
the diamonds that people have when
they die.
