Therein a growfng demand for dwelling houses in Cartersville. A monied syndi dieate would find a splendid investment in building fifty cottages for rent or sale. Mr. John C. Martin, of Adairsville, this week announces himself a candidate for the office of county treasurer. He is a clever gentleman, and his friends will back him up in a lively race. Mr. W. G. Markham, formerly of Tal lapoosa, has taken hold of the new hotel at Emerson. He is an accomplished gentleman in that line, and will make a fine reputation for that handsome new house. Rev. J. S. Hillhouse went yesterday to Calhoun to perform a marriage ceremony between Miss Mattie Tinsley, an estima ble young lady of that place, and Mr. Conner, a popular young business man of Chattanooga. Already the work of improving the roadbed of the E. & W. has been begun. Large numbers of new ties have been distributed along the line and are being put in as rapidly as posssible. It is Col. Rail's expressed intention to put the road in good condition as early as it can possibly be done. wagons an<l buggies turned out by the R. 11. Jones & Sons Mfg. Save money, and help to buildup your town by patronizing home enterprises. Mr. S. T. Cantrell, who has been suc ceeded asroadmaster of the East & West railroad by Mr. J. R. Chapman, has found a more lucrative position on the * B. &C. He has been appointed as sistant road master of that road. A company of amateurs of that place recently rendered very successfully at Dalton “A Scrap of Paper/’ If they can be assured of a good house they express ft willingness to render the play in Car tersville. The proceeds of their per formance they apply to a fund to erect a Confederate monument at their town. We hope they will pay us a visit. In the coming election for county of ficers, don't forget the “wool hat” candi date for sheriff, John T. Layton. He ineans business and is after the salary as "ell as the honors of the office. Stern ness in office but kindness to all worthy humanity, is his motto. Jno. W. Coffin will be his deputy, and before such n team, evil-doers may well have their eves peeled. 2t. The mammoth building of Raker & Hall is rapidly taking shape. It will be an ornament to the city. This is one of the strongest hardware houses in the Ntate. They have built up an enviable fcputation by selling good goods at reasonable prices. With the completion e>f the splendid new house, their facilities "ill be greatly increased, and their busi ness enlarged. They are wide awake, enterprising, reliable business men, and well deserve their success. There is no better kept hostelry in the South than the Buoz hotel at Cedartown. Mrs. Booz, the proprietress, has long since gained a knowledge of the wants of the traveling public, and meets them in a way that has caused her praises to be sung from Maine to the gulf, almost. There is clever Ren, the courteous and active young manager, always on hand to see that the wants of every guest are met in every way. The house has re cently been enlarged and contains ample accommodations for all. By Prof. Ronald Johnston, the able and popular principal of the Cedartown public school, we were shown through the new school building recently finished in that town. The building was erected after plans furnished by Prof. Johnston, and is conveniently arranged for the pur poses of the school. It is “T” shaped. The lower floor has a room each for the grades, and the upper story is to be fitted up entire for a hall for public exhibitions. It is to be seated with opera chairs, and will hold an audience of between five and six hundred. Prof. Johnston deserves much credit for the work he has done in bringing the public school and educa tional interests of Cedartown to their present status, and the people of Carters ville, who know him so well, will be grat ified at the statement we are prepared to make, that his efforts are duly appre ciated by the people of his town. Prof. Johnston, who yet feels a deep interest in Cartersville, expressed to us the hope that she would proceed at once to secure the one thing needful for her permanent prosperity —public schools. I suffered with rheumatism in the shoulder for months and the only thing 1 found that did me any good was Sal vation Oil. It cured me and I recom mend it to all sufferers with said disease. X. Ulman, 1 Pearl St.., Baltimore, Md. Forgery. (5} g On Saturday morning last a negro man called at the Howard Bank and pre sented for payment a check for $79.80. The check bore the name of William Bet ton as drawee, and W. H. Felton as drawer. The filling out and signature were in the same handwriting, which so little resembled that of Dr. Felton that Mr. Will Howard recognized it at once as a forgery. He turned to the negro and said,‘‘l believe l will' have you arrested.” The negro at once shot out of the door and made rapid flight down the street, and the officers were at once notified. A number of citizens pursued the fugi tive to the outskirts of the town on Skinner street and lost sight of him as he fled towards the woods. Marshal Wilkerson followed soon on horseback and extended the search but to no avail. The negro, from descriptions given, is thought to be Jack Kellar, and it is believed he will be caught. The check has been shown to Mrs. Felton, who testified to its spuriousness. City Court Postponed. On account of Supreme court reaching Cherokee circuit, and consequent absence of attorneys, of this bar, the December term of the city court will be postponed to the 3d Monday in December. Jurors drawn for the second Monday will be re quired to attend on the third Monday instead of the second Monday. J. M. Neel, J. C. C. C. B. C. New Schedule. Anew schedule went into effect on the East and West railroad last Monday. The only change effect-ining the morning passsenger going west is that it makes an hour's quicker time between this place and Hell City. The eastward bound morning train leaves Pell City at 11:4-5 instead of 8:00 as heretofore, and arrives at Cartersville at 9:20 instead of 4:35 in the evening. The evening west bound train leaves Cartersville at 4:40 and reaches Broken Arrrow at 3:09 in the morning. A passenger going east leaves Broken Arrow as 10:10 p. in. and reaches Cartersville at 9:00 a. m. There are no Sunday trains. NOTICE. C. Fain and Col. Thos. W. Mil ner, of this city, for the judgeship of this (Cherokee) Circuit. It was a very excit ing race, and they ran so dose together, that it was not known who was elected until the full vote was announced. Then it was found that Hon. T. AY. Milner had a majority of five votes. This is the biggest victory of theseries. Judge Fain is one of the most popular men in Georgia—clever, big-hearted, genial and brave 4 , and with a tine record as a judicial officer. This is the first time he was ever defeated, and many a man will regret it fully as much as the judge himself. It goes without the saying that Tom Milner will fill this high office ably and satisfactorily. He is a well posted law yer, with large ajstore of common sense, and a well balanced judgement. He is a man of faultless morals. This circuit has always been fortunate in securing good judges, and the record will not be broken by honest, able, noble hearted Tom Milner.
