Mr. Isadore Scheuer, of Cedartown, spent a portion of this week among his ninny friends in this city. Hon. Robert Saxon, C. S. C , will ex amine teachers for public schools at West End Institute, Jan. r 29th. Miss Kate Sofge lias taken charge of the musical department of Spring Bank school, near Kingston, Ga. Masters Sam Willard and Herbert Slaughter, of Villa Rica, Ga., are in at tendance at West End Institute. We learn that Rev. Peter Heard, of bad range, will probably take temporary charge of the Cartersville Methodist church. If the guano movement of our county alliance results in more home-made ma nure, it will prove a Godsend to the farmers. Work on the ice factory will go right ahead, and it will not be long before our city will be able to keep c °°l with home made ice. An exchange tells of a man who boasts that his wife is mistress of five tongues, and yet one tongue suffices for the aver age man. “Jeter” is the name lie is commonly known by, but they do say the Colonel's last name is “Eli,” for he never fails to get there. X*uv dwelling houses are going up in almost every part of the city. Carters vilie’s population is steadily growing. BartoiVcountv makes more wheat than any other county in Georgia. She might make a great deal more. Imagine how much wealth would be kept at home if we made wheat enough to do the county, and then had one own mills to grind it. The Cartersville Cocuant-American is one of the neatest, brightest of our weekly exchanges, and that is saying a great deal, for Georgia can boast of the best weekly press in the South, if, indeed, not the whole Union. —Greensboro Her ald-Journal. There is but one day provided, and it is impor tant that every applicant be on hand at the appointed time. Atlanta Journal: Rev. Joseph .Tones, brother'of Rev. Sam Jones, who was to begin tonight a series of meetings at the Marietta street mission, has been unex pectedly called to Arkansas. The meet ings will be postponed until his return, which will be in about two weeks. Mr. I). W. Curry, of Rome, spent Tues day in this city, liis former home. He lias been rusticating in the Northeast Georgia mountains and fishing down in Florida, for his health, and it seems to have had the desired effect. Dave Curry is a whole team when it comes to business. The genial face of everybod’s friend, John 11. Wikle, will be greatly missed in the ordinary’s office, where he has so long and satisfactorily served as clerk of the court. His growing haw practice rendered it necessary for him to give it all his time. He is a sate, honest clever man, and is bound to succeed wherever you put him. West End Institute continues to in crease in number, having now upon her roll 101 pupils. The school is well or ganized and disciplined, and patrons may be well assured that their children will receive careful attention. Miss Sofge assists Mrs, Harris in the primary de partment and continues her services also as principal of the music department. Geo. W. Satterfield & Son are offering rare inducements to buyers just now. Everybody has heard of the “Hawes horror,” the supposed murder of a mother and two children by her husband, and the terrible and bloody riot that soon after followed, at the Birmingham jail. Maj. G. B. West has published a complete work of the whole affair, making one of the most-thrilling hooks lately published. Price 25 cents. Mr. J. E. Loveless of this city is agent for the book. A gentleman who resides in another city but has important real estate inter ests in Cartersville a. few days ago got a hasty glimpse of the situation and decided to add to his possessions here, if possible, and also direct some caoifal to our midst to help in our industrial devel opments. So it goes, What town can show right now the same thrift and cheerful aspect for a healthy growth as Carters vi He’s. Cartersville owes much of her present and prospective prosperity to the public spirited men who now compose her city council. While they are alive to the city’s interest, and enterprising as public servants, they are not reckless in new adventures. Our people should prompt ly encourage and back our city fathers up in every advance step they may take during the year. “Onward and upward” should be everybody’s motto. Consumption Surely Cured. It is said that a Randolph county can didate rode through a certain district last week with a two-gallon jug contain ing about a pint of watered wine in his buggy, adding water every time a voter took a “nip” at the wine until it got toq weak to smell. Mr. J. R. MeKeriny of Cobb county, has a sow that has brought him thirty three pigs in twelve months and two weeks. He recently killed the first litter of eleven pigs which averaged 208% pounds each. The next litter he sold nine for $27, gave one away and kept one. WHAT CURES.
