A Reminiscence.
Texas Siftings.
While the Texas veterns were in Austin
last summer, we overheard two venerable
men who had not seen each other since
1842, talking about the early history of
Texas, and how much better things were
managed in those early days. Among
the incidents of bygone days was a mur
der trial which took place in the days of
the Republic of Texas, not long after the
battle of San Jacinto. A man was
brought beiore the court charged with
having murdered a neighbor, the father
of a large family. The murderer himself
was an unmarried man. When the case
was called, the presiding judge read the
indictments, and having told the prison
er to stand up, said to him :
‘‘Bill Jones, you haven’t been acting
right about this matter. The man yon
killed had never done you any harm. You
murdered him in a cowardly manner,
while he was plowing in the field. You
have deprived a good woman of a hus
band and made orphans of her children.
The widow is unable to support them.
Now I advise you to act like a gentleman
about this matter. If I turn you loose
will you marry the widow and support
the family of the deceased?”
The doomed man said he was more
than willing to marry the widow; in fact
he shot her husband so that he, the ac
cused, could do that very thing.
“Well, then,” said the judge, “I’ll dis
miss the murder case against you, and as
the widow is in court we will proceed with
the marriage ceremony.”
The widow had no objection except that
she wanted a little more time to dry her
tears and fix up for the occasion. The
judge pronounced the happy couple man
and wife without any delay.

A Certain Cure for Catarrh.
Trimre, Tenn., Feb. 28, 1887.
Gentlemen—For seven years I have
had catarrh, Three years of that time I
was unable to work. Unfortunately,
early in my affliction my breath became
very offensive. For seven years I could
suit'll nothing, and I had no taste. How
offensive my breath was all those seven
years, 1 need not tell. What were my
sufferings of mind at not being able to
taste or smell anything, can be easily
imagined. I was treated by physicians
all during that time, and I tried numer
ous medicines advertised. I bought one
, course of treatment I saw advertised for
sl6 that was not worth five cents. Last
spring a year ago a pamphlet from the
Swift Specific Company came under my
notice, and I determined to try the Spe
cific. Fourteen small bottles completely
cured me that spring and summer.
Worked in the crop for the first time in
four years, and 1 have been working
right along since without having the
slightest return of catarrh. The won
derful cure of me has been the means of
bringing S. S. S. to the successful notice
of many neighbors. I regard it as a
wonderful blood purifier, and a certain
cure of catarrh when given a fair trial.
Yours truly, Sam. A. Coles.

matter, together with scabs from ulcers; the
voice is changed and has a nasal twang; the

“Untold Agony from Catarrh.”
Prof. W. Hausner, the famous mesmerist,
of Ithaca, N. Y., writes: “ Some ten years ago
I suffered untold agony from chronic nasal
caturrh. My family physician gave sue up as
incurable, and said I must die. My case was
such a bad one, that every day, towards sun
set, my voice would become so hoarse 1 could
barely speak above a whisper. In the morning
my coughing and clearing of my throat would
almost strangle me. By the use of Dr. Sage's
Catarrh Remedy, in three months, I was a well
man, and the cure has been permanent.”
“Constantly Hawking and Spitting.”
Thomas J. Rushing, Esq., Pine Street,
St. Louie, Mo., writes: “ I was a great sufferer
from catarrh for three years. At times I could
hardly breathe, and was constantly hawking
and spitting, and for the last eight months
could not breathe through the nostrils. I
thought nothing could be done for me. Luck
ily, I was advised to try Dr. Sage's Catarrh
Remedy, and I am now a well man. I believe
it to be the only sure remedy for catarrh now
manufactured, and one has only to give it a
fair trial to experience astounding results and
a permanent cure.”
Three Bottles Cure Catarrh.
Eli Robbins, Runyan P. 0., Columbia Cos.,
Pa., says: “My daughter had catarrh when
she was five years old, very badly. I saw Dr.
Sage’s Catarrh Remedy advertised, and pro
cured a bottle for her, and soon saw that it
helped her; a third bottle effected a perma
