Queer Matrimonial Methods.
From thi* Nashville Banner.
In a certain parish down in Louisiana
a custom among the negroes has long
prevailed which allows the members of;
the same church congregation to ex- I
change husbands and wives. The custom
is not so much in vogue now as formerly. !
Rut last week two negro men secured the
consent of the church to make tin ex
change of wives. All went well for a few
days and then a quarrel ensued, one of,
the men claiming that he lmd been swin
dled. The congregation agreed to meet
last Sunday and arrange the details of a j
settlement. The deliberations were har-j
inonious, and it was unanimously agreed
to settle the dispute by a fiist tight be
tween the two negroes. This appeared
to be satisfactory and the tight com
menced, but to the consternation of all,
after toe first round, one of the men drew
a pistol and the other a huge dirk. A
free tight then followed, in which a good
part of tlie congregation took part, and
the result was that both the child com
batants were killed outright and several
others seriously wounded. The two
women are now without husbands and
free to choose whom they please as com
panions.

The doctor and the letter-i-arrier are not talking about
a case of serious idm-ss. They have simply suspended
work to disc ss the merits ot ttuir shoes. The Ictter
carrier sa> 9 the James Meant $d .-hoc is the best in the
world. The doctor denies it, and says that the James
Means $4 Shoe is better. Considering the needs ot each,
they are both right.
