Of the 108 regular Democrats it seems that I<>4 are old members re-elected and 04 arc new members. Out of the 104 old mem bers, 00 have been retained from the South and 45 from the North; while 44 of the new members are from Southern States and 41 from Northern States. Altogether, the Southern States have 102 Democratic representatives and the Northern States. ((. Ou the Republican side of the House there are 94 old mem bers aud 59 new memliers, making 158 in all. The Northern States send back 89 of tiie old members who are re-elected, *\vhile but five old members have been re turned from the w hole of the South. The Southern States, however, return 11 new Republicans, making 10 Republican rep resentatives from the whole South. Iu that case serious complications may be the consequence, and many persons have paid for their mistaken mitiimx with ttiei*. lives." Prof. Virchow hits' not much opinion of what is called ventilation. The Reporter states that I’rof. Virchow is w rong about the possibility of vitiated air escaping under the eircuinstances stated. It would be dissipated by the principle known as t' e diffusion of gases. According to the Reporter there may be times when it is injudicious to admit external air into a bedchamber, but they are very few —much fewer indeed than people suppose. Common flense Should be used in attempting to cure that very disagreeable disease, catarrh. As catarrh originates in impurities in the blood, local applications can do no per manent good. The common-sense meth od of treatment is to purify the blood, and for this purpose there is no prepara tion superior to Hood’s Sarsaparilla. That this peculiar medicine does cure catarrh is shown by the many testimo nials from people who have found relief upon using it when all others had failed. This was laid aside in the office, but never examined, as Jailor Rirdsong never Intended that it should go into the cell with him. He fre quently asked for it, however. Yesterday morning, before making his toilet for the court house, he asked for a shirt in the valise. The jailer then opened it for the first- time, and found a rope made of the cords of a hammock. The rope was of' three sizes and measured twenty-two feet long. When asked about it, Woolfolk said he made it while in the Atlanta jail of a hammock that swung in his cell, and that he intended it to assist him should he have an opportunity of escaping. The rope will be placed with the iron hook and saw knife found in his cell and kept among the curiosities of the jail. Money still goes to the west and most to the south, and bankers anticipate some pressure as the new year approach es. Exchanges are running to nearly 8 per cent above those of the correspond ing weeks last year, and railroad earn ings, showing an increase exceeding ten |ter cent, with shipments from Chicago by rail 5.000 tons larger than for the same week last year, indicate a. volume of traffic never surpassed at this season, though reaction from thegreater activity of September causes, in some branches, a complaint of dullness. A most import ant fact is that the investment of foreign capital in this country still continues. In six months not less than $45,000,- 000 must have arrived from abroad, w hich has gone far to support the con tinued development of railroads, mines and manufactories, and speculation in real estate.
