Tht* South hh Settler's Home,
London Telegraph, May fi ]
An experienced correspondent, writing
to one of our weekly con temporaries,
says that the isothermal I**ll, running
from the east coast of South Carolina
and Georgia to the western boundary of
Texas, in infinitely more enjoyable all the
year round than the vast expanse lying
to north of the great lakes of the far
West. “Nowhere in the world," he adds,
“can more delightful abodes be found
than in the highlands stretching across
Northern Alabama and Northern Geor
gia. Rxerything necessary for the high
est physical and intellectual development
of man—pure water, bracing air, majestic
trees, productive soil, and an endless pro
fusion of nutritious crops, grasses, fruits,
vegetables and cereals— is present to
make life enjoyable. In summer refresh
ing breezes dissipate the heat by day and
necessitate the use of a blanket by night.
In winter theclimate is simply delicious."
Of still greater importance to settlers is
the incontestable fact that in no other
part of the North American continent
have progress and prosperity advanced
ro rapidly during the last fifteen years as
in the region to which we are now avert
ing. Ten years ago the iron and coal
mines of Northern Alabama might have
been purchased for $50,000; to-day they
could not be purenased for $50,000,000.
Within the memory of many who are
still far from old, the present site of Bir
mingham, Alabama, was entirely unin
habited. To-day Birmingham numbers
a population of 60,000 souls, the growth
mainly of the last ten years. Iron is of
ten said to be the best barometer of na
tional progress, and in 1886 three of the
Southern States—Alabama, Tennessee
and Virginia—showed an increase in iron
production of 500,000 tons against a de
crease of 20,000 ton in all the rest of the
union. Who can wonder that the extra
ordinarily severe winter through which
!)ur North American kinsfolk have pass
ed, and their recollections of blizzards
unparalleled in frequency and intensity,
should be sending thousands of North
erners to those delightful provinces of
the suti where the Cyprus and myrtle, the
orange and the magnolia flourish as in
the Garden of Eden? During their recent
trip from Washington to Florida, Presi
dent Cleveland and his young wife were
amazed to find that twenty hours of
travel brought them to climes compara
ble in geniality of atmosphrre with
Southern Italy. No one, in short, who
had gazed at the blue waters of the Gulf
of Mexico, from the highlands of Pensa
cola, or from the mouth oi the Bay of
Mobile, will entertain the least doubt
that before many more years have flown
the favorite winter resorts of wealthy
Americans will be on the edge of the
balmy sea where Mr. Jefferson Davis is
now spending his declining years, and
amidst the houses, bungalows and hotels
which are everywhere springing up in the
South to attract Northern visitors.

Ninety-Flye Miles an Hour.
From the Philadelphia Ledger.]
An application has been filed by a New
York civil engineer for a patent for a lo
omotive and tender, designed to make
faster time than has ever been made in
this or any country. The boiler is rec
tangular in shape, having a large and
permanent area of evaporating surface,
supported by a great extent of heating
surface, the pressure to be carried being
210 pounds per inch, which is but one
third of the bursting pressure at its
weakest points. The cylinders are in the
rear of instead of between the truck
wheels, and the fire box is supported be
tween the centre of gravity of driving
wheels. All the combinations of parts
are in exact harmony, and it is intended
to easily make the time of sixty miles an
hour, with ten coaches, and can, without
violent strain, be brought to ninety-five
miles per hour with the same load. This
gain in performance over the present
machine, is obtained by a mathematical
construction with reference to the dis
tance upon rail centers upon which it is
supported, and is the first application
made which has embraced and specified
every portion of a locomotive and ten
der, constructed mathematically with
reference to the limits within which they
must be confined and supported. Asa
result of exact proportion with reference
to such base, the cost of maintenance
will be greatly below the general average
of present construction.

A Cowboy Tournament
New Orfc>ar| Plr%un<\]
Among the exercises of the recent gala
week at the capital Of Texas was an ex
hibition that can only be seen in the
Spanish-American countries or in the
States and territories of the American
Cnion, that were once parts of the Span
ish-American domain. This was a tour
nament by cow-boys, or vaqneros, at las
soing wild cattle. These men are requir
ed to ride horseback into an inclosure
where were a number of such beasts, and
with a lasso each man tried his skill in
“roping” an animal. r l he steer at full
speed was to be caught with the lasso
and thrown down and tied as if for brand
ing, and the victor was to be the man
who could execute the work in the short
est possible time.
Twenty vaqueros entered for the con
test, the winner accompanying the feat
required in 4-7 seconds. 1 helongest time
consumed by any of the contestants was
two minutes 9% seconds. The sport was
not perhaps as dangerous as bull-figh*-
ing, but it was not without its risks with
men mounted and dashing at a wild gal
lop among the frightened and maddened
cattle. In the course of the exercise two
of the cattle were killed outright and
three badly hurt. The sport was wit
nessed by a vast crowd.
Cure of Cancer mid Ulcer.
Judge T. C. McLendon writes to the
Swiit Specific Cos.: “About three years
ago, Jerry Bradley had a cancerous sore
on his face, near the right eye. It caused
him a great deal of pain, and he lost the
sight of the eye but was finally cured by
the use of Swift’s Specific This case is
well known in Wilkes Cos., Ga., where he
lived.”
Mr. L. Cox, of Arkabutla, Tate Cos.,
Miss., writes: “I suffered a great deal from
old ulcers for years. Your medicine was
recommended, and after using six bottles
was completely cured. Your medicine
does even more than your claim for it. I
have known it to cure cases which were
thought hopeless.”
Mrs. A. M. Goldsmith, No. 674 Warren
St., Brooklyn, N. Y., writes: “I com
menced using S. S S. about three years
ago. I had suffered much with a sore
throat for over a year-
I used a great many other remedies with
no good results. My little girl, also, had
sore fingers; it commenced from the quick,
and then the nails would come off. We
doctored her for over two years, and
when I began using S. S. S. I thought I
would see what it would do for her. lam
thankful to say that it entirely cured her.
It is the best remedy I know of for the
blood. I really believe it was the means
of saving my life. The doctor told me I
had a throat disease similar to General
Grant’s. I cheerfully recommend it to
all suffering from disordered blood.

Reducing the Surplus.
The disposition of the Surplus in the U.

Statesmen, but a more viral question has
*our attention, and that is the leduction of
the Surplus Consumptives. Since the
discovery and introduction of Dr. King’s
New Discovery for Consumption, there
has been a marked decrease in the mor
tality from this dreaded disease, and it is
possible to still further reduce the number
of Consumptives. How? 3y keeping
constantly at hand a bottle of Dr. King s

a Sore Throat, a Chest, or Side Pain.
Taken thus early a cure is guaranteed.
