In order to gi\ e the returns of the pri

of the day of publication is not made

Beginning next week,however, the pub

Our correspondents will please take due
notice and govern themselves ac

The bar’l, we suppose, is on tap in
Chicago.
Bartow county claims to be the ban
ner county of the State. Let her make
good this boast at the expositions this
year.
Waterworks, electric lights and pub
lic schools are three of Cartersville’s
greatest needs. She must have all of
these.
The Senatorial scramble will come to
an end to-day. It is hoped that we will
not have such a. racket in selecting men
for the Lower House.
In this, issue will be found the able
speech of Hon. J. C. Clements on the
tariff, delivered in the House of Repre
sentatives It is good reading.
Bartow county should take the prizes
for the best agricultural and mineral dis
plays at the expositions this year. She
can if she only would make the effort.
It will take some work for fine displays
to be made at all of the expositions this
year. Are the farmers willing to give
some of their time for such a purpose?
The ladies, God bless them, are fore
most in every good work. They will
make some fine domestic displays at the
expositions this year, if they are given
half a chance.
Let the farmers of Bartow county put
their heads together and get up some
plan for making fine displays at the ex
positions this year. They can take the
big prizes if they only will.
There is nothing like good systematic
work. Let the progressive farmers or
ganize themselves into a body and go to
work systematically for the big prizes at
the exposition. Let them do this
promptly.
There are several flourishing farmers’
clubs in this county. If each would help
out Bartow’s exhibits at the approach
ing fairs the question as to what county
would get the big prizes would be set
tled immediately.
The manufacturer in search of a loca
tion can find no place where the people
will offer him better inducements to
locate than Cartersville. We have first
class inducements to offer and we will
therefore get first-class concerns.
Time generally brings compensation
for wrongs and slights, but it is not often
that it reverses things as suddenly as it
has in the case of the recent national con
ference of the Methodist church, where the
men refused women any voice or vote.
The conference adjourned $29,000 in debt,
and an appeal is to be made to the wom
en of the church to devise ways of making
good the shortage.
The Southern Railroad Record, pub
lished at Atlanta, makes the following
flattering remarks about this paper:
“The Cartersville Courant- American
is decidedly the best weekly paper printed
in Georgia. It has all the interesting
news and especially tells all about Car
tersville and Bartow county and their
wonderful resources. It’s a 6 column, 8
page paper, elegantly printed and a pat
tern for weekly papers. One dollar and
fifty cents a year.”
Let Bartow County Capture the Prizes.
This is to be a great exposition year
for Georgia. The cities of Augusta,
Macon, Columbus and Rome are to hold
fairs, and it is thought that more stran
gers will be led by them* to cross the
borders of the State than ever before.
Nearly every county in Georgia is put
ting forth extra exertion to appear in
tne best light before the critical eye of
these visitors that they may reap a rich
harvest in the way of immigration.
Now, what is Bartow county going to
do about it? Will she idly fold her hands
and let counties that have not one
tithe of her many advantages show
off so finely before the w*orld and walk
away with the great prizes that are to
be offered at these fairs? Will Bartow
county let some Middle or South
Georgia county make a better exhibit of
farm products than she? Will the peo
ple let some county that has no minerals
worth talking about take the prizes on
these over us? Will they let any county
show its superiority in forestry to ours?
Will the noble housewives of Bartow
allow the ladies of any county under
the heaven’s skies to show* greater skill
in domestic affairs than they?
We insist that in all the qualifications
that are necessary to make a magnificent
display, Bartow is preeminently ahead
of any county in the State. Her soil in
richness is unsurpassed, it being capable
of growing the finest cotton, the best
wheat and the greatest variety of the
products of the farm. Her minerals
are the wonder of all, and it would take
but little trouble in getting the prizes for
the best exhibits of these. Here many
kinds of magnificent trees grow, and
finely polished specimens of each kind
would show that Bartow has the finest
forestry in the world. We have an
abundance of fine fruits and vegetables
and they are quite prolific this year.
The housewives could make a superb
showing by canning these and exhibiting
them at the fairs. While the Courant-
American is too moral a paper to be a
party to a bet, we would be willing to
wager a year’s subscription against a
half dozen peaches that if the ladies are
given a, chance they’ll come up hand
somely with their share of the work.
But we might talk about our fine farm
ing lands, our magnificent showings o r
mineral deposits and our kingly forests
until doom’s day and nothing will be
accomplished unless we go to work.
Last year there was a great hue and cry
about Floyd county sweeping in all the
nrizes at the Piedmont Exposition.
Our county people thought these prizes
b longed here, but the difference between
the two was, that Floyd county went
in to win and Bartow exercised herself
very little about the matter. The wri
ter happens to know something about
how Floyd worked for the prizes.
Several weeks before the exposition
opened the best farmers of the county
began to meet in the city of Rome to
discuss the matter. They were aided in
their efforts by enterprising men of that
town. Teams were sent over the whole
county to gather what they could for
the exhibit, and they came back loaded
with samples, in bulk and smaller quan
tities, of everything that, is raised in the
soil of Floyd county. Specimens of all
kinds of woods were gotten together and
brightly polished and the country was
scoured for suitable specimens of ores.
It was quite evident that they were
going in to win and win they did. It
would have been a great wonder if they
hadn’t.
Now, with anything like the effort on
the part of our farmers this year, Bartow
county will triumph over the whole
State. We would suggest that the lead
ing farmers of the county meet together
at an early day for the purpose of dis
cussing the subject of making proper
exhibits at each of these expositions and
also the best plans for the carrying on
of the work. Let them fake hold of the
matter earnestly and hold regular meet
ings that they might have ample oppor
tunity to exchange ideas on the subject
and discuss every detail as fully as pos
sible. The farmers of Bartow county
could do a great thing for themselves if
they will become alive to their duty and
go to work at once.
If there is a farmer in Bartow county
who would like tosay anything on the
subject the columns of the Courant-
American are open to him.
For the first time in its history, which
includes an existence of 134 years, Co
lumbia College, at the recent commence
meat, conferred a degree and presented a
regular diploma to a woman. The de
gree of Bachelor of Arts in the collegiate
course for women was conferred upon
Miss Alice Louise Pond, the only woman
who has ever taken the full course at Co
lumbia. An account says:
When Miss Pond, a delicate girl of
twenty came upon the stage alone from
the left wing to receive her degree, the ap
plause was deafening. Three times in
quick succession the graduating class
gave their college cheer, and this exam
ple was followed by every undergraduate
in the building. When the applause had
subsided the fair graduate received her
sheepskin gracefully, and retired laden
down with bouquets and flowers from
friends and admirers.
Since Minister Hubbard was appointed
to the Court of Japan by President
Cleveland, our trade with that country
has grown from $13,000,000 to $25,-
000,000, $2,500,000 in excess of the
total English-Japanese trade for the
same year. It also exceeds the Gei man-
Japan trade by $19,000,000, and tl at of
France by $12,000,000.
Our Progressive Mayor.
The jieople of Cartersville have reason
to feel muchly proud of the clever gentle
man that presides over the interests and
destiny of their town in the capacity
of mayor. Mr. Wofford has made, and
is making, a most acceptable officer, and
his administration promises to be one of
the best the town has had in years. He
is always on hand ready to grapple with
any question or opportunity affeetingthe
welfare and material interests of the
town, and when he takes hold he never
lets go until something is accomplished.
It has been a source of much gratifica
tion to our more progressive people the
manner in which he does things.
May his shadow never grow less, and
may he live always to stand at the head
of our city government, and to wield his
wonderful power in pushing our town on
to its deserved and surely coming pros
perity.
SO LIVE
That when you bid the world good night,
And upward take your homeward flight
With Christ to dwell,
And tune your soul to heavenly lays
And strike the golden harps of praise.
All will be well.
The enraptured soul in heaven at last
Upon his blest Redeemer casts
A look of love supreme.
Amazed and silent, dumb with joy,
Eternity! Shall my lips employ
His praise shall be my theme.
Come, angels, sweep your harps anew.
And teach this soul to sing w ith you
The joyful new' song.
And harpers harp the heavenly strain.
And earth send back the glorious refrain,
The praise of God prolong.
Anon.
Twas Ever Thus.
A newspaper and newspaper editor that
people don’t criticise and sometimes
abuse are poor concerns. The men that
an editor sometimes feels it his duty to
defend at the risk of making enemies oi
another class are the fiist to show in
gratitude. The editor who expects to
receive too much charity or gratitude
will soon find out his mistake.
It has been very truly said that an edi
tor makes a mistake in his paper, all the
world sees it and calls him a fool. W hen
a private citizen makes a mistake nobody
knows it except a few friends and they
come around aud ask the editor to keep
it out of the paper. When a private citi
zen dies the editor is asked to write ot
his good qualities and keep the bad out.
But when the editor dies the private citi
zen says: ‘‘Now that darned liar will gel
his deserts.”
If your local paper happens to tread
on your toes a little in the performance
its mission, don’t get your back up and
abuse the editor, but stop and take a
good breath and think for a season and
see if you can’t remember some of the fa
vors and kiudness it has shown to you in
the past. Then reflect that it may not
be long before you want some favor
again.—Athens Graphic.

Mosquitoes nl malaria
are the bane of many a town. The mos
quitoes can be endured, but the malaria
should not, for it often ends in chronic
disease. Paine’s Celery Compound is a
specific for malaria, and has a large sale
in all malarial districts
The wonderful extent to which immi
gration to this country has reached is
shown in the fact that in 1820 there were
but 8,000 arrivals, while this year will
show nearly one million. The total im
migration to this country since 1820
amount to nearly 15,000,000 people,
and the effect of this wonderful foreign
increase on our population has been as
great on ourselves as on them, in that
many of our institutions have been made
to conform largely to their ideas, and
others are still undergoing changoin that
direction.
Enjoy Life.
Wliat a truly beautiful world we live
in! Nature gives us grandeur of moun
tains, glens and oceans, and thousands of
means of enjoyment. We can desire no
better when in perlect h< altb; but how
often do the majority of people feel like
giving it up disheartened, discouraged
and worn out with disease, when there is
no occasion for this feeling, as every
sufferer can easily obtain sat-ifactory
proof, that Green’s August Flower, will
make them frte from disease, as when
born. Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint
are the direct causes of seventy-five per
cent, of such maladies as Biliousness, Indi
gestion, Sick Headache, Costiveness, Ner

ing symptoms. Three doses of August
Flower will prove its wonderful effect.
