Iron #nd Steel In the South.
Birmingham, Ala., has recently been
shipping iron to Massachusetts, Pennsyl
vania, Texas and Colorado. This move
ment causes the iron men of the North
some wonderment. The fact that iron
comes front these new and distant fields
right past the doors of the old estab
lished furnaces of the iron regions of
Pennsylvania, indicates the downfall or
the reorganization of the last named
State’s chief industry. But the only pos
sible reorganization is in the department
of wages, for it has been demonstrated
that the manufacturers have scarcely
come out more than even during the yea?
past, or longer.
The Iron Age in considering
in southern iron production k disposed
to believe that steel vueipifacturing will
still be retained iu Pennsylvania. “.\s
the South/" it says, “produces but little
Bessemer pig iron, that special product
of the North is still free from cam petition.
The steel-making process of theSoath, i
which their ordinary pig iron is to lie
need, have not been deveh ped sufficiently
to indicate their actual value, so that
Bessemer pig iron is not yet affected iu
that direction.” Still the Bessemer pro
cess has been introduced in Tennessee
and Alabama, and in the latter State a
number of flourishing steel mills have
given the name of Bessemer to a city
that is said to be rapidly growing in pop
ulation and business,—

Sunday’s Constitution.]
Tom McGill—everybody knows Tom—
is in the city, and has invited Governor
Gordon to visit Chicago and deliver a
lecture, or more properly, an address.
It is a fact not generally known that
thousands of the confederate dead are
buried near Chicago, and that over five
hundred of the boys who wore the gray
are now residents of that city. The
graves of the dead are unadorned and
unmarked, and it is for the noble purpose
of erecting a monument to their memory
that Governor Gordon is asked to lec
ture. All the Grand Army Republic posts
of Chicago have agreed to take tickets,
and Mr. McGill is of the opinion that a
SIO,OOO monument could be secured.
Governor Gordon lias not yet decided
as to whether he will be able to accept
the invitation or not.
The Verdict Unanimous.
W D. Suit, Druggist. Bippus, Ind.,
testifies: “I can recommend Electric Bit
ters as the very best remedy. Every bot
tle sold has given relief in every case.
One man took six bottles, and was cured
of Rheumatism of 10 years’ standing.’
Abraham Hare, druggist, Belleville, Ohio,
affirms: “The best selling medicine I
have ever handled in my 20 years’ expe
rience, is Electric Bitters.” Thousands of
others have added their testimony, so that
the verdict is unanimous that Electric
Bitters do cure all diseases of the Liver,
Kidneys or Blood. Only a half dollar a
bottle at Wikle & Co.’s Drugstore. 2
Health is Wealth
is our motto, and who doubts its truth?
He who has money and poor health is
wretched indeed, while he who is poor
and has good health can be happy. We

gives it, then to possess it is true wealth.

In Atlanta, in the case of J. J. Cooke
against the Western & Atlantic company
for damages, the jury awarded the plain!
till a cool SIO,OOO. The case was of
more than ordinary interest for the rea
son that Cooke had signed what is known
as the “death warrant” contract, where
by, on entering the employ of the com
pany, he agreed to receive SSOO as full
payment in case of accident, whereby he
was permanently injured, or SI,OOO to be
paid to his family in the event he was
killed. The court held that such an agree
ment was not binding upon the plaintiff
and that he was entitled to whatever the
jury pleased to award. As he had suffer
ed the loss of an arm the jury concluded
he was entitled to the extent mentioned
in the verdict.
