A Beaatlfil ami Inuatfnt Child, Drbaathtfd
by an I alerting and InliHCoui I title,
Uie> in * at tersvilie.
A few years ago a poor but respectable
little girl was attending the Acworth high
school, ''he was the only child of a
widowed mother. Distinguished for her
amiability, her great personal beauty, and
her sweetness of disposition, little Essie
Shelly was beloved by all of her school
mates and acquaintances. She was a
child of more than average intelligence,
and this, coupled with close application
to her studies, made her progress at school
satisfactory alike to both mother and
friends.
Bill Williams, of Rockmart, Georgia, a
Mormon and uncle of little Dessie, alter
frequent importunities, succeeded in gain
ing the consent of her mother to let her
live with him as a companion of hi.-
danghter. He professed great affection
for the child, and offered to support and
school her. Shortly after coming under
his roof he began to practice upon her all
the diabolical wiles and seductive influ
ences of the Mormon religion, to leau
her off from the path of virtue. He
would go to her room by night, when
all wac wrapt in silence and darkness, anu
attempt to accomplish his inhuman pur
pose; he would make all kinds of threats
and promises; and, at last, he almost forced
her to submit to him. Poor—unfortunate
—pitiable little girl! Little did she—lit
tle did her mother —dream that in going
into the home of this fiend incarnate, she
was entering the gateway to death and
hell. Without means of support, and
shorn of her virtue, she was driven from
his door last Aug. Iler mother found in
Cartersville a home for herself and daugh
ter. About ten days ago the young girl was
afflicted with a severe case of diarrhoea,
from the effects of which she suffered great
ly. Thursday morning last she gave birth to
a child. From exposure to cold that night,
and from hard labor in her confinement,
she was thrown into the puerperal
fever which resulted in her death yester
day. She was buried to-day. She was
barely fifteen years old. Her baby, a
little girl, is still alive.
We are deeply pained to know that
there is in Georgia such a wretch as Bill
Williams. Hanging is too good for him.
He is base and barbarous in nature; lu
has all the vicious grossness of an unre
strained fiend; he is a mean, muffled,
dastard incendiary, who sneaked under
the cover of the shades of midnight, to tin
bed where virtue, innocence and beaut}
lay asleep, and applied his diabolical torch
to the fane of chastity. The crime is
surely monstrous, foul and unnatural,
and there is connected! with it no palliat
ing circumstance. There is no epithet in
the English language suitable to express
the fiendishness and baseness of the
wretch who can delight in the loathsome
revels of such an adulterous depravity.
We cordially invite the ladies to call
and examine our dress goods.

If ', fiien Jones and Miss I'harfbtte Kirtcpat
rifle Surprise Their Friends by
T idling '* heir Destinies.
Quite an agreeable surprise was fur
nished to our city last Thursday evening,
by the marriage of Mr. Glen Jones and
Miss Charlotte Kirkpatrick. The ceremo
ny was performed by Rev. Sam P. Jones,
at 4 o’clock p. m., at the residence of Dr.
Kirkpatrick, on Church street, in the
presence of a few friends, and the imme
diate relatives of the contracting parties.
After the ceremony, and congratulations
of their friends, the bride and groom
repaired to the elegant residence of Col.
R. 11. Jones, where a most sumptuous and
luxurious repast was served. Every
delicacy known to the most experienced
epicure was prepared and we venture the
assertion that a happier little party were
never assembled around the board.
The marriage was a complete surprise
to everybody, and especially so to the
knowing ones who pride themselves on
“keeping up with the procession.” Even
the most intimate friends of the high
contracting parties were totally in the
dark until a very few hours before the
ceremony. Miss Kirkpatrick -went on
with her duties in the school room up to
twelve o’clock of the day of the marriage.
On Friday evening the happy young
couple left for Mr. Jones’ residence at
Stamp Creek mills, xvhich will be their
future nome. They were followed by the
good wishes of every one in Cartersville.
They arc both young, handsome and pop
ular and launch out into life with the
very brightest prospects for a successful
and happy voyage. The wish of the
American is that they may be safely
harbored in the haven of domestic bliss.
Railroad Accident
An unusual thing occurred on the East
& West railroad, just be|o\y Cross Plains,
last Saturday evening—a collision between
the passenger and freight trains. The ac
cident occurred at or near the transfer
yard of the E. & W. and the E. T. V. & Ga.,
railroads, a few hundred yards below
Cross Plains, and resulted in almost to
tally demolishing the engine of the freight
and knocking the smoke stack from the
passenger engine. Mr. Northcutt, the en
gineer of the passenger, was considerably
bruised and scalded, though his injuries
are not thought to be dangerous, and w r e
learn that lie will be out again in a short
time. An investigation of the cause of
the collision has been made by tire author
ities of the road, and it may be possible
that somebody’will lose a job. Both par
ies to the accident claim that they were
running on time, and that they were not
to blame for the collision. But somebody
was certainiy to blame, as the collision oc
curred in an open place where the advan
cing trains could have been seen for some
distance. Capt. Lester, the conductor of
the passenger train, has been in the em
ploy of the road for seven years, and has
made a reputation as a careful and faith
ful officer. He has many friends along
the line of the road who hope he will be
retained on the road, It is an unusual
thing for accidents to happen on the East
& West road, and heretofore they have
been peculiarly fortunate in that particu
lar. Their men are careful, prudent, faith
ful fellows, and it is not likely that a col
lision will occur again soon.
