r So ugmot the Mexican Indiana.
Like the-peasante of Connaught, the
table-land Indians are a bilingual race,
retaining their ancient vernacular for
domestic purposes, and the acquired lan
guagrNjf Castile for outside business.
Spanish has never become their favorite
tongue, but they recognize its harmoni
ous qualities, and have translated many
of their lyrics without changing the tune
of its strange measure, all in a minor
key, like the plaintive ditties of the
Spanish gypsies.
Those old songs, too, prove that the
subjects of King Montezuma were some
thing moro than “architectural bar
barians.” They treat of war and
the chase, the adventures, pas
sions and superstitions of bygone
ages, and some old rhymes,
which the Indian miners of Anahuac
still crone at imeir solitary camp-fires
have an almost Buddhistic tendency,
lamenting the evils of life and its disap
pointed hopes. Even their erotic melo
dies, with all the usual admixture of
“sensuous caterwauling,” have become
popular enough in their Spanish trans
lations to find favor with a Madrid audi
ence. Marshal Bazaine’s mother-in-law
used to boast that her daughter could at
any time retrieve the loss of her fortune
by singing selections from the popular
canzonets of her native land.—Dr.
Felix L. Oswald.
A Palace Tragedy.
M. Maspero added an incident of a pe
culiarly horrible character to the story
of the unwrapping of the royal mum
mies of Deir-el-Bahari. Among them
was found the body of a man between
25 and oO years of age, bearing neither
name nor inscription of any kind, which
is by itself an extraordinary circum
stance. Instead of having been en
balined in the usual way, the body had
merely been dried by some skillful pro
cess, without removing any internal or
gans, and had been covered with a thick
layer of some mixture at once fatty and
caustic. Above all, the attitude of the
corpse, its bent legs, its feet turned
against each other, its clenched hands,
the expression of its facq—all combined
to indicate that the unknown person had
died in extreme agony.
At first M. Maspero was tempted to
suspect that he had come across a case of
tin 1 enbalmmentof a living man —a form
of murder which it is not difficult to
reconcile with Egyptian usage. Medical
men, however, who had been consulted,
were disposed rather to recognizo the
symptoms of poisoning. In any case, we
are brought face to face with a palace
tragedy, for a body found among the
royal mummies of Deir-el-Bahari can
hardly be other than that of a princely
personage.—London Academy.
Swiss Patriotism uml Prosperity.
In Switzerland, out of 485,000 house
holds 4(55,000 are householders. Here is
one secret of the remarkable patriotism
and prosperity of that people, and of
their comparative exemption from labor
troubles. Their excellent public schools
and twenty-nine industrial schools, all
topped up by their grand polytechnic
institute at Zurich, including the same
practical works as that of this Worces
ter industrial institute, have wonder
fully unified the home-owning and
home-loving people of those twenty-five
cantons.
Though separate in race, religion and
language, they are one in natural inter
est, proud of their history and prouder
still of their recent progress and manu
facturing prosperity. They are an in
genious and industrious people, and
their mechanics are educated and skill
ful, believing in the dignity of labor
and the thorough mastery of some trade.
Though hemmed in by mountains, with
out a seaport, with few minerals aud no
coal, with costly transportation, all
freight from the seaboard coming over
foreign territory. Switzerland threat
ens the ribbon trade of Coventry, rivals
the English and French in muslin and
delaine, and the world in watches,
music boxes and wood carving.—Age of
Steel.
New Salvation Army Schemes.
The Salvation army have decided to
add anew department to their opera
tions in the metropolis. It is proposed
to take two or three rooms in the poorer
districts of London, which are to be oc
cupied by a man and his wife or two
women (members of the army), who wil)
be provided with common medicine and
lint for bandages, and a stock of pails,
brushes, clothes, etc. Every morning
these people wil visit the poor people
living in the neighborhood, and where
they find the rooms in a dirty condition
they will clean them. Having thus
gained an entry, they are to pay their
attention to the spiritual welfare of the
people. The medicines will be given,
where necessary, without charge. They
are also to visit the prison gates and en
deavor to get discharged prisoners to
seek sho aid of the Salvation army.—

Saved HU Rations.
In the fall of 1864 wo were in west
Tennessee on short rations. Our regi
ment had been fighting hard. One day
Capt. G and myself sat eating—
only beans and coffee —when a shell lit
close to our tent-door. We could see the
bluo smoke curling from its fuse. The
captain at once clapped his hat over our
coffee and beans, and went down under
the table, while I went under our bunk.
With a fearful report that shell burst,
covering everything about us with sand.
J limping up, the captain took the hat
oir from over the beans, put it on his
head, sat down, and finished his eating,
remarking, “Rations are too scarce to
lose any by foolishness.” Corporal

Oxalic Aoid In Tomatoes.
The principal acid of the tomato i a
malic; but there is also a trace of oxalic
acid which would be dangerous if it
existed in large quantities. The oxalio
acid acts on the tin in the cans and pro
duces a dangerous compound. The
malic acid does not act so strongly. If
glass is used there can be no danger,
and the flavor of the fruit will be much
better retained.—Exchange, i->x u .

Old-Tini© Congressional Squabbles.
On one occasion there was a corre
spondence indicating a duel between
Daniel Webster and John Randolph, but
the hostile meeting was prevented by
the inteqiosition of friends, Senator Ben
ton taking an active part as peacemaker.
Randolph’s arrogant and insulting man
ner was always leading him into diffi
culties, which frequently resulted in an
order for “pistols for two and coffee for
one,” yet he was no shot. When he was
a tx' u t to fight Representative Eppes, of
\ irginia, Gen. Breckenridge undertook
to superintend his practice, and said to
Mr. Crawford, of Georgia, who was to
be his second on the field: “By all means
arrange the matter, for Mr. Randolph
can’t hit a barn door.~
VY hen Randolph exchanged shots with
Henry Clay, and they shook hands after
the first fire, Randolph jocosely ob
served, pointing to a hole made by the
bullet in his flannel dressing gown:
“Mr. Clay, you owe me a gown.” Mr.
Clay promptly replied, with his u-ual
smile: “I am glad, Mr. Randolph, that
lam not deeper in your debt.” In one
of Mr. Calhoun’s earlier speeches in con
gress he criticised Mr. Randolph for his
“audacity in comparing himself to the
great Lord Chatham.” Mr. Randolph
modestly disclaimed the pretension, but
added: “In one thing we are alike.
Every scoundrel assails me,” and as he
spoke he pointed his long index linger
at Mr. Calhoun.—Ben: Perley Poore.
