![li > a[href="' + document.location.pathname + '"]').parent().addClass('active'); } $(initPage); })(jQuery)](https://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/rebecca-latimer-felton-1835-1930>Rebecca Latimer Felton</a> and her husband, Dr. William Harrell Felton, published the first issue of the <i>Cartersville Courant</i> on February 5, 1885 in Cartersville, Georgia. The four-page paper circulated every Thursday, at a subscription cost of $1.50, and became Bartow County’s legal organ shortly after its founding. In addition to being editor-in-chief, Mrs. Felton also managed the paper’s day-to-day operation. David W. Curry assisted Mrs. Felton as business manager, and William M. Ryals served as city editor; Dr. Felton also published editorials but he played a limited role in the management of the paper. The <i>Courant’s </i>printing press was the former outfit of the Cartersville <i>Free Press</i>, which the sons of the late C. H. C. Willingham, Alex and Jesse Willingham ran. The <i>Free Press</i> ceased publication in January 1885 after Mrs. Felton secured the necessary funds to purchase that paper’s printing materials. In addition to local news and politics, the <i>Courant</i> also published Judge John W. H. Underwood’s <i>Reminiscences of the Cherokee</i>s, which was an informal history of the Cherokee Nation and an account of his experiences as a traveling lawyer. Underwood’s <i>Reminiscences</i>, which spanned a period of time including the Cherokees’ forced removal in the 1830s, were featured on the <i>Courant’s</i> front page from March to July 1885. Mrs. Felton often included literary works and memoirs in the paper’s first columns. In early June 1885, Dr. Felton, a politician from Georgia’s seventh district who had made a name for himself as an independent Democrat, renounced his status as an independent in the <i>Courant’s</i> pages. Felton wrote that he felt his disagreements with party members were less important than showing united support for president Grover Cleveland. Mrs. Felton, who traveled three miles everyday to the paper’s office, fell ill in October 1885, and the paper began to struggle as result. The illness took such a toll on the her that Dr. and Mrs. Felton retired from the management of the <i>Courant</i>, and they announced this retirement in a valedictory editorial in the <i>Courant’s</i> March 4, 1886 issue. The paper’s new owners were organized under a stock company called the Courant Publishing Company.</p><p>With the <i>Courant’s</i> September 23, 1886 issue, ownership again changed hands when Frank J. Taylor and Alex M. Willingham took over. David W. Curry severed his connection with the <i>Courant</i> with that same issue. In January 1887, Taylor sold his interest in the paper to Willingham, who shortly after arranged a merger with Douglas Wikle’s <i>Cartersville American</i>. Wikle and Willingham managed the <i>Courant-American</i> until July 12, 1888 when they announced the sale of the paper in a valedictory editorial. In that same July issue, Elam Christian, a prolific Georgia newspaper editor, and D. B. Freeman introduced themselves as the new proprietors. Christian’s tenure was short-lived, but D. B. Freeman remained associated with the paper for the next 29 years. A. M. Willingham returned to work as an associate editor in 1889, and assisted until H. A. Chapman replaced him in 1892. The <i>Courant-American</i> faced limited local competition until 1896 when the News Publishing Company founded the <i>Cartersville News</i>. In 1901, that stock company, headed by J. W. Vaughan, bought out the <i>Courant-American</i> and consolidated the paper with the <i>Cartersville News</i> to form the <i>News and Courant</i>; shortly after the titles merged, the stock company altered its name to the Cartersville Publishing Company. The company appointed H. A. Chapman, D. B. Freeman, and A. M. Willingham as editors, and this arrangement continued until 1904. On June 9, 1904, the <i>North Georgia Citizen</i> posted a notice dated from June 2 which announced ‘J. (Jim) A. Hall of the <i>Calhoun Times</i> has purchased the (<i>Cartersville News and Courant</i>) plant from the stockholders and will move his family from Calhoun.’ Hall retained Chapman and Freeman as editors of the <i>News and Courant</i> so that he could split his time between Calhoun and Cartersville. On October 13, 1904, the paper’s title became the <i>Cartersville News</i>, which did not change until it merged with the <i>Bartow Tribune</i> in April 1917. After several more paper consolidations and ownership changes, the newspaper continues to serve as Bartow County’s legal organ as the <i>Herald-Tribune</i>.</p></p>
