a rice cake would have to
have flavor. There’s more fla
vor in a warm breeze coming
off a lake in early spring. The
breeze has more nutrition too.
They are both equally filling.
You can eat an entire bag
full and have nothing to show
for it except your entire body
being covered in so many
flakes it looks like you have
terminal dandruff.
If you still wish to try one,
they are still around. Whether
this is a stockpile from the 90s
or new production I’m not
sure. Given these things have a
longer shelf life than Twinkies,
it’s possible giant warehouses
are still packed to the rafters
with these rejects from an insu
lation company.

Do you remember the little
song that we’ve all sang in
church as children that goes
something like this, “I’ve got
the joy, joy, joy, joy down in
my heart, down in my heart,
down in my heart. I’ve got the
joy, joy, joy, joy down in my
heart, down in my heart to
stay”?
As Christians, we already
have the joy, joy, joy, joy down
in our hearts. However, some
times we find it hard to “re
trieve” that joy that is “down
in our hearts”. Liz Curtis
Higgs says, “If you’ve got the
joy, joy, joy, joy down in your
heart, why not move it up
about twelve inches and put it
on your face?”
I think I know why it is so
hard to “put that joy on our
face” sometimes. Smiling is
easy when life is going well.
But on the contrary, when life
deals us a bad hand, the sor
rows and troubles of life tend
to pull down the corners of our
mouth. What used to be a
smile on our face is now a
frown.
Have you ever packed a
suitcase for a trip, and then
picked up the suitcase to carry
it to your car, only to find that
you could hardly pick it up be
cause it was too heavy?
Maybe you wished then that
you had not put so much
Journey to Joy
Inspiration
“stuff’ in your suitcase. If
you’re like me, you probably
had even packed a few things
you didn’t really need “just in
case”.
And so it goes with life.
We don’t experience joy in our
lives, because we are trying to
carry around too much “stuff’.
We have already “obtained”
joy when we got saved; our joy
is still in our heart somewhere.
Nonetheless, our joy is some
times hindered by all the bur
dens that we are carrying.
David prays this prayer in
the book Psalm chapter 51,
verse 12, “Restore to me the
joy of your salvation and grant
me a willing spirit, to sustain
me.” David was carrying a
burden of sin and had lost the
“joy” of salvation. In Psalm
51, David is confessing his sin.
Sin always causes a great
divide between us and God.
Sin is a manifestation of the
flesh. Joy is a manifestation of
the Holy Spirit. Therefore,
when we have sin in our lives,
our flesh and the Holy Spirit
are at war and it is impossible
to experience joy when a battle
is going on within us.
If sin in your life is stealing
your joy, learn from David, the
man after God’s own heart.
Immediately confess your sins
to God. The Bible tells us in 1
John 1:9 that, “If we confess
our sins, he is faithful and just
and will forgive us our sins
and purify us from all unright
eousness.”
Maybe sin is not the culprit
that is stealing your joy.
Maybe you have experienced
a traumatic event in your life
that is weighing you down.
Maybe the baggage from your
past is too heavy and it is hin
dering your joy in the present.
Maybe you are carrying a
heavy load of guilt, worry,
stress, bitterness, busyness,
other people’s problems, or
bad habits of your own.
Whatever may be the case
in your life, there is hope. You
do not have to carry your
heavy burdens anymore. Jesus
tells us in Matthew 11:28-30,
"Come to me, all you who are
weary and burdened, and I will
give you rest. Take my yoke
upon you and learn from me,
for I am gentle and humble in
heart, and you will find rest for
your souls. For my yoke is
easy and my burden is light."
God has already given us
the gift of joy. He has already
provided the “joy” of salvation
through His Son, Jesus. He
has already given us the fruit
of “joy” through the Holy
Spirit.
If you don’t have joy be
cause you have “packed” too
many things in your suitcase of
life, God wants to lighten your
load. He is waiting for us to
hand over our baggage to Him.
Then, my friend, you will find
that the joy “down in your
heart” will make its way right
up to your face!
