PAINT IT GREEN!
TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Let’s paint Turner County Emerald Green on
Wednesday, January 29, 2014 in honor of Mrs. Cindy
Fitzgerald! Mrs. Cindy Fitzgerald is a Special Education
teacher at the Turner County Special Services School.
She has been chosen by her peers as teacher of the
year in 2010-2011. She is currently battling liver cancer.
We are asking all of Turner County to set this date aside
and everyone wear green to honor her. The Turner
County Schools Relay for Life Team will be selling bal
loons to anyone for $1. We ask that the balloons be re
leased at 2 pm in her honor. Let Turner County show
our Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Cindy Fitzgerald, that we
support her and thank her for all that she has done in
the Turner County School System!
Andrea Lewis, a native of Turner County, is the daughter of Jerry and Sharon Lewis. She is currently a resident
of Macon, Ga. Ms. Lewis is a 3rd grade teacher at Jeffersonville Elementary School in Twiggs, County. She has
been an educator since 2010. In Twiggs County, she is known for her commitment to her students and dedication
to teaching. Ms. Lewis was awarded Teacher of the Year by her colleagues and Principal Mrs. Colinthia Foreman
for the 2013 -2014 school year. She was also awarded the 2013-2014 County Teacher of the Year by her Super
intendent Mr. Elgin Dixon and the Twiggs County Board of Education. The Superintendent noted that Andrea's third
grade class has received the highest CRCT score averages for the last consecutive three years. In addition, she
was awarded My Teacher is Tops, which is an honor given to deserving teachers in Middle Georgia. A student from
her class wrote a letter to the local news team (13WMAZ of Macon, Ga) explaining how Ms. Lewis has made mean
ingful differences in her life. Andrea was surprised in her class by a news crew which recognized her achievements.
Her family, colleagues, and friends are very proud of her accomplishments.

Bryant asked this be held.
“There are some issues
going on,” he said and did not
elaborate.
Mayor Jim Hedges said Mr.
Bryant wanted to visit the mu
nicipal court before making a
decision. Court will continue
to be held in the meantime.
Wiregrass Editor Ben Baker
and County Building and Zon
ing Administrator Mike Mas-
trario have ended their
appointed terms on the Ash
burn Downtown Development
Authority (DDA). The DDA
has seven members, four of
whom must have an interest in
the downtown region. One
may be a City Council mem
ber. Sandra Lumpkin serves in
that post.
Councilman James Hall,
who wanted to be on the DDA
but was rejected by a City
Council vote that supported
Mrs. Lumpkin, nominated
Shylynski Johnson and Kevion
Chatfield to the board. Ms.
Johnson works at DFCS.
City Attorney Coleman said
under his understanding of the
law Ms. Johnson was OK. Mr.
Chatfield was rejected because
he has no direct interests in the
downtown region.
On the Ashburn Develop
ment Authority, which covers
the parts of Ashburn not cov
ered by the DDA, James
Shipp’s term has ended. That
board also has a vacancy
which was not filled after that
post became open.
Mr. Hall nominated his sis
ter Tangela Hall to one post
and Rhonda Walker to the
other. The only requirement is
to be a resident of the city.
Mayor Hedges asked this be
tabled until he had time to
speak to the nominees to make
sure they understood what is
required and would be willing
to serve. He said he also
wanted to make sure Ms.
Walker still lives in the city.
In other appointments:
• Mrs. Fumpkin is Mayor
Pro Tem. Mayor Hedges made
this appointment.
• Flin Coleman, Tommy
Coleman’s son, was appointed
prosecuting attorney for mu
nicipal court.
• John Sherrer, a Vienna at
torney, was appointed indigent
defense attorney for muni
court.
• The senior Mr. Coleman
was reappointed as legal coun
sel. “He did a lot of service for
this city last year,” the mayor
said.
OFFICE
(Continued from Page 1)
was headed east on W. Wash
ington Avenue. At the intersec
tion of Washington and Main
Street (Highways 112 and 41),
she is accused of attempting to
pass at this intersection. Chief
Saxon said while she was mak
ing that maneuver, she struck a
parked trailer. She then backed
into a vehicle behind her, he
said.
“She sideswiped a parked
car. She finally pulled into a
parking space at Bancorp Fi
nance. She went over the side
walk and the vehicle came to
rest, striking a light pole
there,” he said.
The Turner County EMS
was called to the scene.
“At the urging of family
members, she was taken to Tift
Regional. When she was re
leased by Tift Regional, she
was picked up by the APD,” he
said. “She was allowed to post
bond after her arrest and book
ing.”
Officers “attempted to do ah
the tests we’re required to do at
the scene. She refused, which
is why we have a DUI refusal,”
the chief said.
The chief said Mrs. Office
suffers from a life-threatening
disease. Chief Saxon said that
figured heavily into his deci
sion to not take Mrs. Office
into custody at the scene and
let her post a bond.
“I don’t want to be respon
sible should she have an attack
(of the disease) at the jail. That
could be life threatening. I am
not going to have someone
pass away on my watch at the
jail if I can help it,” he said.
While in custody of the
APD, the City of Ashburn
would be responsible for Mrs.
Office’s medical care and any
bills.
