homework and tutoring. Dur
ing this time, discussion was
held by the community leaders,
parents, and students on the
importance of the afterschool
programs. One guest stated,
“The teachers that assist with
the program seem to really
enjoy what they do.”
“Throughout Georgia, after
school sites provide the kind of
enriching environment that has
been consistently proven to be
a keystone to academic suc
cess,” said Katie Landes, Di
rector of the Georgia Statewide
Afterschool Network. “The
connection is clear: when stu
dents report positive after
school experiences, teachers
report gains in the classroom.”
According to America After
3PM data released in 2014,
only 16% of Georgia’s K-12
youth participate in afterschool
programs, while 18% are re
sponsible for taking care of
themselves after school. De
spite this, 40% of Georgia’s
children who are not in an af
terschool program have indi
cated that they would likely
participate if one were avail
able in their community. “Any
program that keeps children in
volved and that contain healthy
activities is a good program,”
stated an attendee guest.. “
