Ladies continue winning streak; Ronalda Pierce Hoopfest is Saturday
by Brad Christian
The Turner County Rebels
and Irwin County Indians
squared away in Ocilla Tues
day night as basketball season
is in full swing now with the
official end of the high school
football season over the week
end. Turner County has been
in full basketball mode for a
Christmas gifts for
almost everyone.

couple of weeks now but Tues
day night was the opener for
the boys team for Irwin County
and just the third game for
Lady Indians, who came in
with a record of 0-2.
The Lady Rebels, who
came in with an undefeated
record of 5-0, came out hot
against the Lady Indians. They
jumped out to a big 25-3 lead
after one quarter and had built
it to 43-11 by halftime. A run
ning clock was instituted in the
second half as both teams were
able to empty the benches and
play their entire team. Twelve
different Lady Rebels played
and seven different girls scored
en route to a 61-22 victory.
Mylashia Yancey led the way
with 32 points and 11 rebounds
as she has recently passed
1,600 points in her Lady Rebel
career. Lady Rebels head
coach Tasha Kimble has also
recently passed 100 wins in
just over 4 years as the head
girls coach at Turner County.
In the night cap, the Rebels
and Indians battled in a re
match of last year’s Region 2-
A championship. Much of the
Indian basketball squad also
plays football so they are still
rounding into basketball shape
after losing to Clinch County
in the state championship last
Friday. Not being together for
long showed as the visiting
Rebels, who were coming off
an overtime victory over
Jackson graduates Police Academy
Quamtravious C.R. Jackson of the Ashbum Police Department
was among 24 individuals who recently received certificates at
graduation exercises for the 282nd session of the Georgia Public
Safety Training Center (GPSTC) Regional Police Academy at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
The GPSTC regularly holds multi-week intensive training ses
sions designed to acquaint officers with state-of-the-art law en
forcement techniques. The Academy operates in cooperation with
the School of Human Sciences at ABAC.
Atkinson County on Saturday,
jumped out to a somewhat sur
prising 29-10 lead at the half.
Not letting the foot off the gas
at all, the Rebels continued to
pour it on in the second half
over a winded and fatigued In
dian squad on the way to an
easy 75-36 victory. Junior Ta-
morrion Terry continued his
strong start to the season as he
finished with 19 points and 16
rebounds. Also scoring in dou
ble figures was senior Ced
Leggett with 12 points and jun
ior Jarvis Hall with 11 points.
Friday night brought a
lengthy trip to Greenville. The
Lady Rebels would have quite
the challenge against a strong
Greenville squad which came
in only having lost one game.
The Lady Rebs jumped out to
a big 18-2 lead after one but
the home team had cut the lead
to seven at the break at 32-25.
Greenville tried to keep it close
but the visitors from Ashburn
just had too much down the
stretch as they eventually won
55-43 to keep their record un
defeated. Yancey led the way
with 26 points and 14 re
bounds. Brishuana Barnes
pitched in with 10 points. As a
team, the Lady Rebels shot 43
percent from the field.
In the nightcap, the Rebels
and the Patriots faced on. The
two teams have had some in
tense battles over the years. It
was a seesaw affair in the first
half as the Rebels, who came
in having won two straight, led
37-32 at the half. The Rebels
never pulled away by a big
margin as the Patriots kept it
close throughout but the
Rebels did just enough down
the stretch to get out of town
with a quality road victory as
they won 78-69. Terry had a
huge game as he finished with
29 points and 27 rebounds.
Ced Leggett finished with 12
points while Jarvis Hall fin
ished with 11 points.
After a Tuesday night battle
in Cordele against Crisp
County, the Rebels (4-3) and
Lady Rebels (7-0) will partici
pate in the Ronalda Pierce Hol
iday Hoopfest beginning
Saturday night. The Lady
Rebels are scheduled to play at
6:30 with the Rebels scheduled
for 8:00.
