Ashburn’s downtown Christmas village
by Jayne Pylant
When I purchased this of
fice in Lebruary 2002, I also
came into possession of sev
eral pieces of a Christmas vil
lage.
I believe we had an Ace
Hardware, a grocery store,
town hall, a church, a light
house and a couple of houses.
We also had a ceramic train
with train station. It would all
fit on an eight foot table.
Every time I would go
Christmas shopping I would
look at the village pieces that
were on sale. I would limit my
self to one or two pieces each
year. In a couple of years I had
to expand to two 8 foot tables.
As the years started going
by and adding pieces each year
I had to improvise with the ta
bles and wound up with quiet
an assortment of things hold
ing the village.
Over the years family mem
bers and friends have added to
the collection with things they
no longer use or say it is too
much for them to put up and
want their pieces to be en
joyed.
One year, my secretary
went to the 100 mile yard sale
and ran into a lady who had 25
pieces she wanted to sell. She
called me and told me the price
and I told her to get them that I
would do something with
them. I guess I didn’t realize
how much room 25 extra
pieces would take up.
My husband came in and
looked at the collection of
houses and buildings and told
me he would see what he could
do to help. He built a table of
sorts for me to put the village
on along with some risers to
add dimension.
I took sheets and cut and
hemmed them to go around the
sides to cover the ugly under
world of the Christmas Village.
I usually start putting the
village together right after Hal
loween. Everyone keeps ask
ing why so early - well it takes
from 2 to 3 days to get it as
sembled. My staff keeps laugh
ing at me when I am working
on the village as I will make up
stories about why this building
has to go here and that one go
there.
Also when people are
placed a story has to go with
them. I love to fish and just as
luck would have it someone
had a bait shop and a restaurant
which needed to go by water. I
got a blue plastic table cloth
and made some water and
found some people fishing and
some small boats. I felt this
was a real addition to all of the
“snow”.
I have a rangers station for
up in the mountains, a light
house for the shore, churches,
banks, police station, fire sta
tions, gift shops, restaurants,
shops of all kinds, a Rite Aid,
Walmart, Home Depot, a
movie theater, schools, homes,
a farm house with barn and
many others.
My daughter affectionately
calls the village “Whoville”.
My grandchildren all want to
touch each piece and rearrange
the way they think it should be.
I am always happy for anyone
who wants to see the village to
stop by.
Editor’s note: The Christ
mas Village is at Pylant Insur
ance on E. Washington
downtown.
