SPLOST split spurs sparks
The Special Purpose Focal
Option Sales Tax (SPFOST)
split has Sycamore getting 5
percent of the take, the same as
Rebecca and the Turner
County Development Author
ity. Mayor Wayne Woodruff is
not happy about this.
SPFOST is a local 1 cent
sales tax. The money can only
be spent on projects listed in
the referendum. Voters will be
asked to renew the tax in the
November general election.
“I felt like we got slapped in
the face when I saw that today
(Thursday). I am pretty hot
about it,” the mayor said.
Going into negotiations
with the County Commission
and the other cities, Sycamore
asked for a 1.5 percent increase
to 6.5 percent of the total. The
agreed split leaves Sycamore
at 5 percent.
The City Council approved
the split at last week’s meeting.
Rebecca and Ashburn have
also signed off on the split.
Under the agreement, the
County Commission gets the
bulk of the money. Ashburn is
second. Sycamore, Rebecca
and the Development Author
ity get 5 percent and the Victo
ria Evans Memorial Fibrary
gets a small slice of the pie.
“My problem with it is
we’re at 5 percent. Rebecca is
at 5 percent. The Development
Authority is at 5 percent.
We’ve got more projects we
need to work on,” the mayor
said.
“We are the rented mule,”
said Councilman Jim Galt-
Brown.
“We are obsolete,” the
mayor said.
He pointed to the emer
gency management meetings
that took place before Hurrican
Irma arrived as another exam
ple. He said Sycamore and Re
becca were never mentioned in
the discussions. It was ah
about the county and Ashburn,
he said.
Sycamore plans to use its
share of the SPFOST for water
and sewer system work on an
as-needed basis. No specific
projects are on the list. Rolling
stock, like patrol cars and
dump trucks are also on the
list.
Mr. Eister said the list in
cludes expanding City Hall.
That has a budget of $ 150,000.
The Council has looked to add
more space in City Hall for
several years.
SPFOST cannot be spent on
recurring items like salaries
and utility bills.
Many wants; one true need
It is interesting how we can
want some things so badly that
we begin to justify them as
needs. I like tools a lot, but in
reality there are not a lot of
them that I really need; just a
few basic ones for small jobs
would be adequate. (Please do
not inform my wife of this
humble confession!) How
ever, when I venture into hard
ware and home improvement
stores I am much like a kid in
a candy store! The temptation
there is so intense that I have to
admit that I have purchased
some hand tools in the past that
have yet to be used.
I recall a time that I really
wanted a particular kind of
drill. I put a lot of time into
looking at various makes and
styles, and finally purchased
one. That decision was several
years ago, and I doubt that I
have drilled enough holes with
it to make the purchase reason
able, although it does look
good occupying space among
my other tools. It does not take
a rocket scientist to determine
if that was a bona fide need or
merely a superficial want.
There is a need, however,
that we all have: we need
Christ as our Savior. He is not
an option; He is a necessity to
our eternal spiritual well being.
Even those who believe that
they are just fine without Him
desperately need to accept
what He achieved for us as He
U
a
o

Inspiration
died on the cross for our sins
and rose to life again on the
third day.
The Bible gives us many
reasons why we need Christ. I
invite you to consider a couple
of them.
We need Christ as our Sav
ior because of the holiness of
God and the sinfulness of hu
mankind. God had a perfect
relationship with the first man
and woman that He created,
but that was interrupted by sin.
Because of His holy and right
eous nature and the sin-cor
rupted nature of humankind,
sin had to be properly dealt
with before that relationship
between God and man could
be restored. Only Christ could
provide that means. As our
Savior, He provides the only
way for us to experience a per
sonal relationship with God.
Without Him as Savior we re
main dead and hopeless in sin,
but through Him we have the
promise of everlasting life.
Romans 6:23 reminds us: “For
the wages of sin is death, but
the gift of God is eternal life in
Christ Jesus our Ford” (New
International Version).
We also need Christ as our
Savior because ah other means
that humankind has used to at
tempt to gain God’s favor have
failed. Throughout history,
men and women have tried to
earn God’s favor by doing
good works. They have tried
to access Him through empty
religious routine and ritual.
These ah failed and will con
tinue to fail. Only faith in
Christ will bring us into God’s
favor and forgiveness. The
Bible records that as Peter and
John were called on the carpet
for their faith in Christ, Peter
courageously and accurately
expressed to the doubting reli
gious leaders of his day that
“Salvation is found in no one
else, for there is no other name
under heaven given to men by
which we must be saved”
(Acts 4; 12). And to Whom
was Peter referring as the only
Savior? Jesus Christ.
Pause and take time to re
flect on the many reasons that
you need Christ as your Savior.
Then personally take advan
tage of His provision; believe
upon Him and allow Him to be
the Savior of your soul.

You can lead a horse to a trailer, but you can’t make him get in. This horse, taken
to Katz Veterinary clinic on the other side of the road was not interested in getting in
the trailer to go home. After more than two hours, the horse was finally loaded.
We invite you to attend the Church of your choice this Sunday
