Repair bills on the City of Sycamore’s
oldest police cruiser continue to pile up.
At the August meeting the Council said
if the repair bills reached a certain point,
about $1,000, it was time to sell the cruiser
and get a replacement.
At the September meeting, Police Chief
Bill Ryder said the latest repairs for the
starter and brakes are going to run close to
$400.
That has pushed the recent repair bills
close to the limit the Council had set.
However, funds in Sycamore are tight
right now, including money in the Special
Purpose Local Option Sales Tax
(SPLOST) fund. The City can use
SPLOST money to buy a replacement
cruiser, but even buying one used would
run the account very low.
"Bicycle. Get you a helmet with a blue
light on top,” quipped Councilman Jim
Galt-Brown.
Chief Ryder said he was concerned
about spending more in repairs than the
vehicle is worth.
“Right now, keep fixing it,” Mr. Galt-
Brown said.
Councilman Fred Eister said, “it needs
to be in running condition or we can’t sell
it to anybody else.”
The City wants to have money in the
account as a cushion in case emergency re
pairs or work are needed elsewhere.
“The bank balance (overall) is not
where we would like for it to be,” Mr. Eis
ter said. He said the City cannot spend any
money unless it is a critical need. “We’re
not hurting, but I do not want to get into
that shape.”
Once property taxes come in, the City
will be in better financial shape.
A SPLOST renewal is on the ballot for
the coming general election. While voters
here have always renewed the tax, that’s
no guarantee they will vote to do it again.
Early voting opens Monday, Oct. 16 at
the Bubba Akins building on Highway 41
between Sycamore and Ashburn. The gen
eral election is Tuesday, Nov. 7.
Money
coming
Turner County has received a bit over
$300K from the federal government in
reiumbursements for money spent in the
aftermath of the January tornado and
straight line wind storm.
Emergency Management Agency Direc
tor Mark Robinson said he’s applied for
about $900K more, bringing the total to
$1.2 million. That money was delayed as
the federal government switched focus to
helping people recover from hurricanes
Harvey and Irma.
Puerto Rico, a US territory, also got
pounded by Hurricane Maria so federal re
sources are headed to the island as well.
TO
REBEL
ROYALTY
Quaneisha Ezell,

Homecoming Queen Fri
day night at Alan Hobby
Memorial Stadium during
the halftime ceremony.
Tyrese Vail, at left, was
crowned Homecoming
King during the halftime
show. Mr. Vail also plays
football and was in the
locker room during half
time and so unable to ac
cept his crown during the
ceremony. His parents ac
cepted on his behalf.
The king was supposed
to be crowned before the
game but PA system prob
lems delayed the pre
game show. The Charlton
County coach demanded
the game start on time so
the ceremony for the king
had to be pushed to half
time.
