SBA tornado disaster
Chemistry students at Crisp Academy have been
busy in the lab this nine weeks. Recently students
(Kaleb Spires (I) and Aubrey Brown) created a density
column using different materials, and performed exper
iments to distinguish between chemical and physical
changes (pictured: Lyndsea Childs (I) and Addison Daw
son).

Albany museum sponsors writing contest
The Albany Museum of Art
announces their third annual A
Picture is Worth a Thousand
Words writing competition.
Students currently enrolled at
Southwest Georgia high
schools and colleges are en
couraged to participate.
Beginning Sept. 22, stu
dents will select a work of art
from the A Picture is Worth a
1,000 Words art object list. All
of the listed objects will be on
display at the AMA through
the duration of the contest for
closer inspection. Students will
then write an essay no longer
than 1,000 words relating back
to the piece the author selected.
All contest guidelines can be

Cash prizes will be awarded
to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. They
are awarded as follows: 1st
place: $250; 2nd place: $150;
and 3rd place: $100. Up to
three honorable mentions will
be selected. High school and
college entries will be judged
separately. All winners will be
published in a special A Picture
is Worth 1,000 Words Museum
publication, with the honorable
mentions listed in the publica
tion and available to read on
line. The winning submissions
will be announced Nov. 9 at an
award ceremony and essay
reading. The contest is spon
sored by the Bunzl Foundation.
All essays must be submit
ted to 1000Words@albanymu-
seum.com no later than Oct.

Chamber sponsors turkey shoot, scarecrow contest

Are you looking for a rea
son to brush off the dust of
your trigger finger? Maybe
you need some practice be
fore you get out in the deer
stand? Thankfully the Cham
ber of Commerce has just the
solution for you!
We are hosting a Turkey
Shoot Fundraiser Saturday
October 21, 2017 at the
Sycamore shooting range,
from 1-3 p.m. We will not be
shooting real turkeys! There
will be targets at the range.
The ammo will be provided
and the best shots will receive
a voucher for a free turkey at
the Ashburn Piggly Wiggly.
Shooters must shoot the
ammo provided by the cham
ber. 12 and 20 gauge shot
guns only. A house gun will
be provided. No outlaw guns
or barrels longer than 36
inches.
Veterans salute
Did you miss last year's
salute to veterans? If so don’t
miss this one. We will be fea
turing the veterans in a mag
azine this year. You can either
email or bring in a picture to
go in our special salute com
ing in November.
There is no charge to sub
mit a picture. You do not have
to resubmit a picture.
Separate limbs
and leaves
Ashburn residents: When
you pile leaves and limbs at
curbside, please separate limbs
from the leaves and pine straw.
The City's street vac can pick
up the leaves and straw. The
boom truck can pick up limbs.
When you separate the leaves
and limbs, pick up goes faster
and takes fewer employees.

The U.S. Small Business
Administration is reminding
Private NonProfit (PNP) or
ganizations in Georgia of the
Oct. 25 deadline to submit
Economic Injury Disaster
Loan applications for damages
caused by the severe storms,
tornadoes and high winds on
Jan. 2,2017.
PNPs that provide non-crit-
ical services located in the fol
lowing Georgia counties are
eligible to apply: Baker, Cal
houn, Dougherty, Early,
Mitchell, Turner and Worth.
Examples of eligible non-criti-
cal PNP organizations include,
but are not limited to, food
kitchens, homeless shelters,
museums, libraries, commu
nity centers, schools and col
leges.
The SBA offers Economic
Injury Disaster Loans to help
eligible non-critical PNP or
ganizations meet their working
capital needs such as ongoing
operating expenses. This as
sistance is available regardless
of whether the organization
suffered any physical property
damage. Loan amounts can be
up to $2 million with an inter
est rate of 2.5 percent and
terms up to 30 years.
The SBA sets loan amounts
and terms based on each appli
cant’s financial condition. To
be considered for this assis
tance, PNPs need to apply by
the deadline.

Application (ELA) via SBA’s
secure website at https://disas
terloan .sba.gov/ela.

Alzheimer’s Walk in Tifton
The Alzheimer’s Associa
tion® is inviting Tifton resi
dents including Coffee,
Colquitt, Irwin, Tift, Turner,
Charlton, Ben Hill and Cal
houn counties to join the fight
to end Alzheimer’s by partici
pating in the Alzheimer’s As
sociation Walk to End
Alzheimer’s. The Walk will
take place on October 28,2017
at Abraham Baldwin Agricul
tural College in Tifton.

Walk to End Alzheimer's par
ticipants will complete a two-
mile walk and will leam about
Alzheimer's disease, advocacy
opportunities, clinical studies
enrollment and support pro
grams and services from the
Alzheimer’s Association. Walk
participants will also join in a
meaningful tribute ceremony
to honor those affected by
Alzheimer's disease.
"I am excited about all the
new teams that have joined this
year for our Walk and how it
continues to grow,” added
Kimberly Blackstock, Event
Chair. “The community sup
port this year has been incred
ible,” added Blackstock.
In addition to the two-mile
walk, participants will enjoy
festivities for families and
kids, music, rock painting and
with WALB-TV weekend an
chor, Emileigh Forrester will
be the emcee for the event.
