Schools hoping for good weather
Turner County schools are
on the edge of having to make
up missed school days, said
Superintendent Jeff McDaniel.
The superintendent earlier
said the missing days due to
Hurricane Irma will not be
made up for students, but em
ployees will have to do so.
“The wind, rain and the un
knowns were too much to put
kids on buses,” he said at Mon
day night’s School Board
workshop meeting. The storm
did little damage, compared to
what could have happened. Dr.
McDaniel said it is better to err
on the side of caution in situa
tions like Turner County had.
As of right now, no days
will be added to the school cal
endar for students or teachers.
As long as the weather stays
good and school is not closed
again, that will remain.
The superintendent told the
board if more days are missed,
then likely the staff and faculty
year will be extended. May 31
is the first day that could be
added followed by June 1 if
needed.
School employees can make
up some of that time by work
ing after school events without
being paid. He gave an exam
ple of working the concession
stand. If a teacher is paid to be
there, that does not count as
makeup time. If the teacher is
not paid, that counts as makeup
time for supervising duties.
Students have a “five-day
window.” “If students miss
more than 5 days, we need to
make that up. Anything less
than 5 days (no). That gets into
instructional time,” Dr. Mc
Daniel said. “We are asking to
be blessed with a gentle win
ter.”
SAMPLE BALLOT
Basketball court closed
Sycamore Police Chief Bill Ryder has closed the City basket
ball court for two weeks.
“Kids are climbing over the fence to get their ball instead of
going around to the gate. We had this problem before and the bas
ketball court was closed,” he said. “I had to close it again.”
He did not identify the young people who were climbing the
fence by name. He described them as men between 14 and 17
years old.
“I am pleading with the parents. Tell your children to stop
climbing the fence. If this keeps happening, we will have to close
the basketball court permanently,” the chief said. “They are tear
ing it up. The taxpayers paid for this and it needs to be treated
properly.”
Former Gov. Zell Miller launched Georgia’s lottery-funded Pre-K program in 1992 as a pilot program serving
750 four-year-old children. Since then, Georgia’s Pre-K program has laid a solid foundation for academic excellence
and future success in the lives of approximately 1.6 million children. The goal of Pre-K week is to emphasize the
importance of quality early childhood education by providing opportunities for leaders to engage with Pre-K class
rooms in local communities. Now in its seventh year, Georgia Pre-K Week is coordinated by Voices for Georgia’s
Children, a policy and advocacy nonprofit organization. State Rep. Clay Pirkle read to our PRE-K classes on Mon
day. Avery special "Thank You" to Mr. Pirkle for taking time out of his busy schedule to read to our students!

Youth Apprentice program at CA
by Wayne Baxter
Crisp Academy seniors Lev
Smarr, Stephanie Fraser, and
Donovan Dorough are really
enjoying participating in the
Youth Apprenticeship program
at Crisp Regional Hospital. All
three students are interested in
pursuing careers in the Med
ical field. Lev is interested in
Dermatology and Donovan has
a keen interest in Orthopedic
surgery. Stephanie is interested
in Neo-Natal Nursing and
hopes to work in a neo-natal
intensive care unit.
Youth Apprenticeship coor
dinator Wayne Baxter is very
appreciative of Crisp Regional.
“They have an awesome pro
gram for young people. Stu
dents spend a week in each
department and then rotate to
another. Operating Room, De
livery, Emergency Room, and
Pharmacy are just a few of the
places they go. It is a great lab
experience for these students.
The second semester allows
students to choose which de
partment they prefer in too
many students don’t choose
the same department. The folks
in each department are very re
ceptive to these students and
make sure it is a rewarding ex
perience for them. Crisp Re
gional has a goal that students
participating in the program
may someday come back and
work here at the hospital. So
many students leave the com
munity and do not come back.
This goal is right in line with
growing a “homegrown” work
force using Youth Apprentice
ship as a vehicle to accomplish
this mission.
All three students are very
grateful for this opportunity.
They look forward to going to
the hospital every afternoon
and all agree that it is a great
learning experience. They
highly recommend this pro
gram to any student interested
in a Medical career. They all
agreed that Youth Apprentice
ship is helping them make a
career choice. The experiences
at the hospital have reinforced
their career goals.
