Separate limbs
and leaves
Ashburn residents:
When you pile leaves and
limbs at curbside, please
separate limbs from the
leaves and pine straw. The
City's street vac can pick up
the leaves and straw. The
boom truck can pick up
limbs. When you separate
the leaves and limbs, pick
up goes faster and takes
fewer employees.

Grad rate 81.1%; 96.6% w/o alt school
Turner County’s graduation
rate, as reported by the Depart
ment of Education (DOE), was
81.1 percent overall. The 2017
report is available at the De
partment of Education website.
Superintendent Jeff Mc
Daniel said he is pleased to see
those numbers, but also says
work remains to be done.
The DOE breaks out gradu
ation rates into two groups for
Turner County: the high school
and the alternate school. The
two combined give the total
graduation rate.
At the high school, 86 of 89
students graduated for a grad
rate of 96.6 percent.
“If you are looking to come
to Turner County schools and
do all the things we expect of
students, you have got a 97
percent chance of graduating,”
he said.
BRINGING ME DOWN
At the alternate school,
none of the 17 students gradu
ated for an effective grad rate
of 0 percent, according to the
DOE.
Dr. McDaniel said
he is surprised by that
0 percent graduation
rate from the alternate
school and believes it
is not accurate. Staff at
the central office is
checking with the
DOE to make sure
those 17 students actu
ally did not graduate.
“I find it hard to be
lieve that 17 kids dropped off
the scale for Turner County,”

he said. The Department of Ed
ucation provided the numbers
and the percentages. He be
lieves that some stu
dents transferred to
other schools while
others were not
tracked properly by
the state.
“Regardless, 0 out
of 17 is unaccept
able,” he said. “We
are going to improve
our record keeping,
be more appropriate
with the reporting and
make sure we keep up with the
kids.” (See GRAD Page 2)

Every Georgia veteran with

the Seal of the State of Georgia

Red Ribbon week at TCES
Ribbon Week will be rec
ognized at TCES beginning on
Oct. 23-27. This year’s theme
at our school is “Your Future is
Key, so Stay Drug Free!”
Red Ribbon Week is a na
tionwide event in which
schools, parents, and commu
nity leaders work together to
spread the
message about
the dangers of
drug and alco
hol use.
Red Rib
bon Week
began as a
way to honor
a former drug
enforcement
agent, Enrique
“Kiki” Ca-
marena. Kiki
lost his life in
the line of
duty as he fought to seize drug
traffickers in Mexico. Red Rib
bon Week is a national way to
remember his life and help
stop the destruction caused by
drugs.
Each year, schools try to
make Red Ribbon Week a fun
time while spreading an impor
tant message. At
TCES, there will
be different themed
days for students to
participate in while
learning the dan
gers of drugs and
alcohol.

County Sheriff’s
Office and a group
