DAR hears report on what feathers in a headdress mean

met at the 1st United
Methodist Church office (Nel

Sept. 23 at 10AM.
Regent Marlyn Nelson
called the meeting to order,
welcoming all members pres
ent.
Lynn Odom, acting chap
lain, gave the opening prayer.
Regent Marlyn Nelson
opened the meeting in the
usual ritualistic form with the
pledges to the American Flag,
the Georgia Flag and the
Daughters of the American
Revolution Pledge. The Amer
ican Creed and the Preamble to
the Constitution was given by
all present.
Rebecca Goff read the Pres
ident General Ann T. Dillon
message that 3,370 members
attended the 126th Continental
Congress in Washington D.C.
this year. The National Com
mittee had created an online
Video Presentation that was in
troduced and encouraged all
chapters to use them. She also

of Service October 11,2017,
when chapters throughout the
world commemorate the date
of our organization by giving
back to the nation. Also she
stated that a group of members
plan to travel to Paris to com
memorate the 100th Anniver
sary of World War I and the
contributions of Daughters
from that era. The American
Room has an exhibit titled
“Women of Resilience: DAR
Service in World War I.’Tf you
can’t go to Washington, D.C.
to see the exhibit you can go
online and see it. So let’s go
online to see it.
Lynn Odom gave the Na
tional Defenders Report by
National Chairman Julia Miller
Rogers. She told the group
about the Rolling Thunder, an
organization with 98 local
chapters throughout the United
States and abroad. The mem
bers consist of old and young,
men and women, veterans and
non veterans. They all are
united in the cause to bring full
accountability for the Prisoners
of Wars. Their watchword “We
will not forget” is to remind the
government, the Media and
Public to not forget too.
Secretary Theresa
Williamson read the minutes
and they were approved as
read.
Treasurer Theresa
Williamson gave the treasurers
report and it was filed as given.
The History moment was
given by Marlyn Nelson about
100 families in a back country
town of Augusta; Georgia that
was the site of two major bat
tles of the American Revolu
tionary War. The first siege
was on September 14, 1780
and the seconded happened
during May, 1781. The Ameri
can peace negotiation in Paris
because of the capture of Au
gusta gave reason to demand
the independence of Georgia.
The Veteran’s moment was
given by Teresa Cromer. She
reported about the Veterans
History project. She reported
that there were about 19 mil
lion war veterans living in the
United States today and the
best way to learn about their
history was to talk to them as
they had lived the history and
help make it. She reported that
we are losing about 1,500 vet
erans every day.
The Native American mo
ment was given by Theresa
Williamson about the meaning
of the feathers in their head
dress.
The Meadows Garden
minute was given by Marlyn
Nelson. She told about the gift
shop there and the success was
due to the DAR Daughters.
The items they have are An
tique toys, china, children’s
books, jewelry and new orna
ments.
The DAR School minute
Marlyn Nelson and Theresa
Williamson had visited the
Tamassee DAR School. They
had pictures of the campus and
the buildings for us to see.
The Conservation minute
Lynn Odom shared how the
butterflies played a role in the
pollination. Also that 75% of
the flowers rely on pollinators
and that one of every three
mouthfuls of food we eat rely
on pollinators.
Old Business - Flags were
ordered and now are being
used at the Elementary School.
Marlyn attended the workshop
at the Methodist Children’s
Home in Macon in August.
The chapter was awarded the
“Chapter Achievement Award”
level 2.

plan options. The Medicare an
nual open enrollment period
started on Oct. 15 and ends
Dec. 7. Any changes you make
during this period will be ef
fective on Jan. 1.
Also, if you are already a
Medicare beneficiary, you may
qualify for Low Income Sub
sidy, Medicare Savings Pro
grams and Patient Assistance
Programs. Local assistance
with health insurance related
issues including Medicare,
Medicaid, financial assistance
programs, healthcare errors,
fraud and abuse, and long-term
care insurance is available

TURNER COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT
We, the Grand Jury, serving at the October Session of the October 2017 Term make the
following presentments:
1. We wish to thank the Honorable Bill Reinhardt, Judge, for his able instructions to the
body, District Attorney Paul Bowden and the rest of the District Attorney's staff, District At
torney Pro Tempore Brad Rigby and Assistant District Attorney Whitney Bradford, Sheriff
Andy Hester and his department, Chief Clifford Jordan and his department, Clerk of Court
Mary Lee Green, and our Bailiff, Jim Brown.
2. The Grand Jury considered evidence presented concerning 25 offenses, contained in 9
indictments and returned 23 True Bills, 2 No Bills, and 0 Tabled.
3. The Grand Jury heard a Special Presentment Indictment presented by Assistant District
Attorney Whitney Bradford on behalf of District Attorney Pro Tempore Brad Rigby.
4. We respectfully request that the Court order the within recommendations and present
ments of the Grand Jury to be spread upon the minutes of the Turner Superior Court and
be published in The Wiregrass Farmer and that the Clerk of Court send a copy of these
presentments to the Turner County Commission.
