Vietnam veterans saluted
The High School JROTC
hosted its annual Veterans
Day observance on Friday at
the Civic Center. Veterans
Day fell on Saturday this
year.
This year saw Vietnam
Veterans honored by the
State of Georgia for their
service in the war. State Rep.
Clay Pirkle and Kennesha
Lawson presented certifi
cates of appreciation to Viet
nam veterans in the
audience.
Other JROTC cadets with
responsibilities in the pro
gram were 2nd Lt Kane’na
Wilburn, 1st Lt Kristain
Norris, LTC Joseph Lewis
and CPT Taylor Terrell, 1st
Lt Faith Brown. The color
guard presented the colors.
The High School band
and chorus performed a se
lection of patriotic music.
The annual event also
featured a slide show of
local veterans. Each year a
few more pictures and
names are added to the list.
If you or your veteran was
not in the list, or in the Spe

perintendent Jeff McDaniel,
Principal Keith Croft, Sr.
Class President Qwontrav-
ius Lawson and State Rep.
Clay Pirkle.
“What an example you
have provided for the rest of
us,” Mr. Pirkle said. “Thank
you. All of you are cher
ished. We still look to you to
lead by example.”
The wreath presented at
the ceremony was also
posted at the Courthouse at
noon in a separate cere
mony.
Water
woes
continue
Since the Sycamore City Council can
not decide what to do, the city continues
to lose money, and water, at the Nor-Way
Court subdivision on the edge of town.
A draft resolution to partly address the
issue was presented to the Council last
week. It was rejected 3-2. Voting no
Councilmen Jim Galt-Brown, Keith
Reynolds and Odie McNair. Voting yes
Fred Eister and Clay Harris.
“There are so many things wrong
with this draft, I hardly know where to
start,” said Councilman Galt-Brown. “It
is redundant and moot.”
The Councilman presented copies of
past agreements regarding the property
and the utility lines to the Council.
Among other things, the paperwork
gives the City an easement for utility
lines.
“We can do anything we want to with
those water lines. We have an easement
that’s been there 15 years,” he said.
The paperwork Mr. Galt-Brown pre
sented say the City has an easement only.
Nothing he presented shows the City
ever accepted the water lines. In past
meetings, the Council has said the City
cannot work on the actual lines because
they are privately owned.
The paperwork also has a letter from
the then-City engineer saying the City
should not accept the utility lines be
cause they were not to state code.

Hurricanes delay Ashburn gas line extension
Ashburn's gas line expan
sion, to deliver natural gas to
the peanut blanching plant at
Sylvia Drive and Rockhouse
Road and other industries got a
setback with the hurricanes
earlier this year.
"The problem is getting the
pipes," said City Manager
Sedric Carithers. "The hurri
canes affected the plants that
make the pipes."
Despite that, the project is
moving forward. A temporary
line is being laid to deliver nat
ural gas to the peanut blanch
ing plant located at the old
CentraPak facility. The peanut
plant promises more than 100
jobs.
"We already have gas in that
area, It's just not enough for the
plant and the other industries
there," Mr. Carithers said.
Sconyers Gin and Hat
Creek Peanut are also looking
forward to the bigger line run
ning through the area as this
will let them buy natural gas
for drying work. Natural gas is
cheaper than propane, which
they are currently using.
Mr. Carithers said the proj
ect should be complete by the
first of the year. Engineering
work and surveys are done.
The contractor has assured the
City that putting pipes in the
ground will not take long.
