Rebels end season with a loss in playoffs to Schley
The Turner County Rebels
advanced to the playoffs for
the third straight year and on
paper and in the minds of the
coaches, they had a pretty good
chance to upset the Schley
County Wildcats in the first
round of the GHSA Class A
playoffs last Friday night in
Ellaville. However, they
couldn’t quite get over the
hump offensively and came up
short 14-6.
“We felt we matched up
well with them. They are a
disciplined team and are fun
damentally sound but we felt
we had the athletes to match
up. We played hard and hung
in there but just couldn’t make
that big play to get us over the
hump,” said head coach Leroy
Hood.
“It’s tough to win on the
road in the postseason and we
had a good crack at it.”
The Wildcats took a 7-0
lead into halftime behind a me
thodical running game. The
Wildcats scored their touch
down on a short field after the
Rebels failed to convert on
fourth and one on their own 30
yard line. Hood said he was
looking for a spark and if he
had to do it again, he would
punt the ball away.
The Rebels did get on the
board in the third quarter as
Jason Harris ran it in from 5
yards out to cut the deficit to 7-
6 after the hobbled snap on the
extra point. It would remain
that way until the Wildcats
would score in the fourth quar
ter to go up 14-6. The Rebels
never could get anything going
on offense after that to mount
a successful drive.
‘We were just a touch off on
offense,” said Hood.
The loss ends the season for
the Rebels, who close with an
overall record of 6-5. This sen
ior class closes with three play
off appearances and a 26-18
overall in their high school
football career. Hood credits
this group with laying the
foundation of any future suc
cess coming the way of the
Rebels.
‘These kids bought into us
and gave us their all. They
have had a lot of change over
with head coaches the last few
years so it’s been difficult but I
can never fault their effort.
They played hard for me,” said
Hood.
He says he is already look
ing forward to next year. The
region schedule has already
been set as the home and away
games will be the opposite of
this year. He is putting the fin
ishing touches on scheduling
non region games for 2018 and
more than that, he is just look
ing forward to a normal offsea
son.
“I was hired in late spring so
things were kind of rushed.
But we are going to build this
program the right way. I plan
to meet with some college
coaches to get some of these
seniors into college and as for
next year, I am excited. We
will have 18 starters back. The
future is bright here,” said
Hood.

Long Shot Clovers air Pistol Team Conquers the ‘Swamp’
By Faye Belflower
Did you see and feel that
shining warmth and brightness
this past Sunday, around 4:15?
Well I do believe it wasn’t the
sun coming out from behind
the clouds. That was the beam
ing eyes and bright smiles of
four of Turner County’s finest;
as they received their hard
earned Medals after competing
in the Gator Invitational Air
Gun Matches, held in Way-
cross.
Will Watson, one of our old
men, has moved up from the
Basic Supported Position
(BSP) to the Standing Sup
ported Position (SSP). This is
a move that he decided he
wanted to do, even though he
had another year of eligibility
in the BSP. That new position
requires that he now stands up
and holds the air pistol out
straight from his side (not in
front of him). That 2.3 pound
air pistol can get mighty heavy
(during the 50 minute compe
tition) so it is supported with a
counter weighted “T-sling”.
You are using new muscles and
having to retrain your sight
alignment. This new position is

very difficult to master, thus
you know going into it that
your scores with drop. He has
handled those challenges like
the “Champ” he is. He scored
his new best with a 291, allow
ing him to bring home the
tol. He looked and shot like a
“Pro”. His dad, Kenny, served
as his partner/coach and helped
to guide Mason through his
first competition. Mason
scored a very good score of
251, to earn the Second Place

“Gold” in that Division.
Ike Hobby is truly enjoying
his new air pistol and has be
come a true marksman with it.
He shot an amazing 390 out of
400 from the BSP, earning him
his second Gold Medal since
Nationals. Ike has gone from a
youngster that wanted no part
of shooting sports, a year and a
half ago, to a very confident
young man. He had the honor
of owning the highest score
over all Divisions; this earned
him the distinction of having
his name engraved of the Gator
Invitational Air Pistol Champi
onship Trophy.
Mason Purvis is one of our
new team members; he has
only been shooting for about
four weeks. I do believe we
have him “hooked” on air pis-
Silver Medal. Way to good
kiddo, welcome to the family.
Sam, Sam, Sam those
of you that know Sam Hobby
know what I mean! Yes, Sam is
a First Grader and as such is
part of our Educational pro
gram. Why so young, you ask,
because he saw a 6 year old
from Louisiana compete at Na
tionals this summer. With his
desire and drive to be competi
tor on the team (as a family
member he was already a
LongShot Clover), I just could
and would not deny him this
chance because of his age.
I had the pleasure of being
young Sam’s partner/coach. He
is such a “hoot”! During the
practice period he was good to
go, spot on. But when that
timed Competition started, he

was like “a deer in the head
lights”. It took him a little bit
to settle down and get his stride
back. I would tell him we were
here to have fun and not to
worry about the score. But I
will openly admit that the
closer he got to 200 and I
counted the pellets he had left,
it made me a little nervous. But
the minute he saw that a 200
was within sight, that smile al
most blinded you. It was really
hard for his mom (Ike’s coach)
and me not to hoot and hollar
when that last pellet hit and
gave him a score of 205. His
personal best!! He was so ex
cited....everyone there was so
excited. (He now has a fan
club..lol) And yes, he earned
the Third Place Bronze Medal.
However, it does not end
there. We started this year early
because the Team wanted to
mentor the new kids and give
them more time practicing for
Georgia 4-H State Champi
onship. As such, we now have
a team of 10 boys that are very
excited to be LongShot
Clovers. They are all doing
very well, but due to prior con
flicts several were not able to
go this past weekend. That just
means they will have more ex
perience under their belts when
they go to our next competi
tion.
We are also proud to an
nounce that we will have two
new coaches receive their 4-H
Certified Air Pistol Training at
Rock Eagle the first weekend
of December. We are also ex
cited to announce that four
other Counties will be having
Air Pistol Coaches trained. We
are “dancing on the roof tops”
at the prospect of seeing this
awesome sport grow.
Stay tuned, as we have the
USA Shooting Junior Olympic
Shooting Championships com
ing up the end of January.
