CONCERNING OUR CONTEMPORARY.
A contemporary of ours declares
with much gusto that local news-
papers should mould and make
public sentiment, and be not eter
nally tagging after sentiment. We
-opine that he has been moulding
and making the public sentiment
of Bainbridge long enough to
know all about it (?) We “felici-
tate” ourselves however over the
fact that if we tag after public
sentiment, we may at least have
the choosing as to whose mark
and brand we shall wear. We
have never yet played in our con
temporary's back yard; preferring
rather to mould our own senti
ments on all questions at issue—
just as every American citizen
should do. The safety of this
republic depends not so much
upon “great guns”—of our con
temporary’s caliber—but on inde|
pendence and thought, ’fhis paper
may not have a “confrere” (what
ever that means) but we shall go
it alone, always preferring to pro
mote peace rather than strife in
all local affairs.
Tillman Acquitted.
After being out 20 hours, the
jury in the trial of Jas. Tillman re
turned a verdict of not guilty.
Tillman has been released, and a
great demonstration followed the
announcement of the verdict. The
press of the country declare the
elease of Tillman as a remarks-
e triumph of passionless justice.
IN PLAIN ENGLISH.
There’s a distinct difference be
tween “convictions” and “convul
sions,” our sunny friend of the Ar
gus seems to have contracted a se
vere case of the latter malady.
We would suggest a diet of “Force”
for breakfast, dinner and supper
and frequent applications of wet
towels and sponges to his temples.
White wings now float above our
contemporary’s office. We take it
to mean peace.
Tallahassee Schedules Resumed.
Mr. W. M. Legg, the progres
sive general manager of the Geor
gia, Florida and Alabama railway,
announces that double daily pas
senger trains have been resumed
to Tallahassee, and that the track
and roadbed are In better shape
than ever, a great deal of work
having been put on them for the
past few weeks.
It will be remembered that the
recent flood was exceeding disas
trous to this road south of Bain-
bridge, doing great damage, espe
cially at Lake Jackson, a few miles
this side of Tallahassee. The
resumption of the old schedule
will be good news to the traveling
public who have experienced much
inconvenience on account of the
suspension of the trains for re
pairs.
Mr, Legg states that his road is
expecting and preparing to handle
a big travel to the Georgia State
Fair, which is to be held at Macon
beginning October 21st. Through
coaches will be operated over the
G. F. & A. and the Central to
Macon, thus relieving its many
potrons of the disagreeable feat
ures attendant upon a change of
cars. This enterprise of the road
will tend to greatly increase the
j travel.
Brinson Briefs.
T. H. Tucker and family left Sun
day for Attapulgus on a visit of a
few days.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Murphy went
oyer to Bainbridge one day this
week on a shopping trip.
H. B. Brockett of Bainbridge, was
over one day this week on business.
He returned to town the same day.
A number of our young people
went over to Iron City last Sunday
to attend the Clarke-Donalson mar
riage.
Rev. J. I. D. Miller preached at
the Baptist church last Sunday and
Sunday night to larffe and apprecia
tive audiences.
Work on the new school house is
rapidly progressing but it is not
thought that there will be any school
held earlier than Jan., 1st,
Miss Fannie E'ranklin who is again
•n charge of the public school at
Bethel spent Saturday and Sunday
in Brinson with friends.
S, J. Warren has just returned
from an important business trip to
Florida where he owns a large body
of pine timber. He went down to
close out a sale, but we understand
that he did not do so.
The extreme dry weather, while
good on cotton, certainly has done
great injury to potato and sugar
cane eropB. We hope the drougth
will soon be broken.
After all the talk J. Pierpont
Morgan didn’t show up, and con
sequently the curiosity of the
many concerning the real motive
! of his visit remains unsatisfied.
With a Bohemian colony desirin'
to settle in Georgia, and Sir
Thomas Lipton contemplating ihe
purchase of an extensive planta
tion in our state, all speculation
regarding J. Pierpont’s intentions
can be readily pardoned.
