Harrell For Judge.
((J(|M M I! N'ICATKD.'
That the people of Decatur County
will select the Honorable \V. M- Harrell
to be the chief dignitary of their City
Court seems quite probable. The writ
er being an admirer of this able young
lawyer has taken the trouble since his
candidacy was announced, to interview
many influential men fiom the various
sections of the county in order to get an
idea of his strength and popularity.
While he knew that Colonel Harrell had
a large and favorable acquaintance he
was surprised to find such unanimity of
sentiment and expression of friendly
feeling and confidence in the man and
his ability. His announcement seems to
havelstruck apopular chord which is ring
ing in harmony throughout the county.
This has led the writer into medita
tion on the character and career of Col.
Harrell, as moulded and influenced by
his opportunities and eviromnenrs, and
he discovers ample meiits to warrant
skd account for his large following of ad
mirers and supporters.
He was bom on the banks of the beau
tiful Thronateeska, seven miles above
lfainhridge That river has never ceas
ed to be to him sn inspiration. Often
may ho he seen strolling beside its lim
pid waters, beneath the bearded oaks
that were liis companions and mentors,
and it was in the midst of such romantic
surroundings, appealing strongly to his
artistic temperament, that he gathered
and stored up the gems of eloquence
with which he has so often charmed and
entranced his hearers.
He was reared at Whigham and it was
there that he received his early educa
tion and training under tlio beloved Dr,
McElvy, who is still a prominent phys
ician at that place. Afterwards lie at
tended school four years at Cairo tught
by the scholarly Dr. H. 11. Harris. It
wus here that he began the study of law
with the expectation of entering Cum
norland University, but, owing to the fi
nancial reverses of his father he was
forced to give up his cherished ambition
of a collegiate education.
In 1HH1 he came to Hainbridge and con
tinued tbe study of the law under the
tutelage ot the distinguished law firm of
McGill <V O'Neal and was admitted to
the bar the following year He at once
began the practice in partnership with
J. U. Talbert,
Tile struggles with poverty after his
father’s re ,-erses only intensified his de
termination to persevere and become
qualified in his chosen profession. Dur
ing the time of his studying and thft
first year of his practice he was nothing
daunted by discouraging circumstance^
hut fought on. tirui in his conviction,
that success awaited him un that his vir
tues and talents would find their re
ward.
His first political honor was when he
was chosen to serve the people by his
appointment as solicitor of the City
Court of Hainbridge in 18811. Tnis office
he held continuously for seven years
and a half, when he resigned it. As the
state’s prosecuting officer he did hisduty
well and made fame and reputation for
himself. At the same time he realized
that the position was not suited to nis
tastes His teuder and sympathetic
nature prompted him to become the
friend of the meek and lowly and to
champion the cause of the unfortunates
charged with crime Therefore realiz
ing that that the defense was his forte
rather than the prosecution he sent in
his resignation.
The most heated political campaign of
1885, when Patterson for sheriff and J.
D. Harrell and H. A. Kieh for represeu-
natives, were the nominees of the demo
cratic party, lingers in the minds of
many. The republicans, backed by
their horde of ignorant blacks, bad been
in power and that year they made a su
preme effort to continue it. Col. W
M. Harrell devoted bis energy and elo
queuce to tbe aid of his party, took a
veij active part in the campaign and
made many speeches for the nominees
in all parts of the county. The force of
his logic and eloquence was irresistible,
and it was conceded that his speeches to
both whites and blacks were most effect
ual. As a result the power of the re
publican partv in Decatur county was
forever broken.
Col. Harrell was elected to the legis
lature from this couuty aud served with
credit to himself and honor to his con
stituents during the sessions ot 181)4 5.
He was on several occasions chairman of
the county democratic conventions, ever
which he presided with dignity and
grace He was ever a staunch friend
and ardent supporter of the candidate
he deemed most suitab.e and best q tal-
itied for the position sought.
He was once appointed by Governor
Atkinson Judge of the City Court of
Hainbridge, the position be is now ask
ing st the hands of tbe people. When

lie sought this appointment he received
the endorsement of many of the ablest
lawyers of this seotioi and of the state,
including judges of the Supreme Court.
So llattering were his endorsements that
the governor appointed him without hes
itation, but on going to the senate for
confirmation his opponents raised the
objection that he was ineligible on ac
count of his having resided in Moultrie
for a short time previous. Thinking
this objection might be well fo unded he
withdrew his name and requested the
governor to make another appointment.
Now as to his ability to occupy the
position to whioh he was once appointed
by a governor and to which he now asks
the people to .-.Vet him: He has had an
experience of t -v->nty years in the active
practice of the law. During that time
on the civil side of i Im courts he has rep
resented clients with thousands of dol
lars at stake. The highest evidence of
his ability as a civil lawyer is the fact
that he has retained the most of his cli
ents through a long period of time and
successive (and mostly successful! litiga
tion, and whenever their rights of proo-
erty is involved his services are in de
mand again. As a criminal lawyer he
certainly knows no superior in ibis coun
ty and in fact his reputation extends be
yond the limits of tne county. He has
been employed in every criminal case of
importance, ou one side or the other, for
many years back, and his success with
them has been marvelous. He has a
peculiar adaptability for the logical pre
sentation of facts. He gathers them as
they fall from the lips of the witness,
arranges them into a systematic bou
quet and presents them to a jury as an
unanswerable argument an advocate par
excellence On such occasions his very
soul is possessed with the zeal of advo
cacy and every oue within the sound of
his yoice i* swayed and moved by his
powers of eloquence and convincing ar
gument.
As a counselor be is dominated br con
servatism and the applications of tbe
fundamental principles of the law, and
his advice has borne the assau Its of his
antagonists and attested his wisdom,
justice and expenence. He is possessed
of what may tie termed a judicial mind.
Finally as a man he is humane, ho is
charitable, he is true, be is just. What
higher qualifications could oue expect in
a just and upright judge.
