The Bard of Avon had ev dently been up against a list of Russian-Japanese war ships, when he asked “what’s in a name?” Sam Small is vigorously threat* ening to oust Senators Bacon and Clay, if they fail to endorse the Panama treaty. The Senators, however are not much alarmed, as it is such a “small” affair. Announcement. The diplomats in Paris and En gland are anxious to discover what position America will take in the event of war between Russia and Japan. Uncle Sam makes the move and all the lesser powers sec ond his motion. Moultrie s two splendid papers, The News and The Observer have consolidated and will be under the management of Messrs. Allen and Adams the editors of the two pa* pers. The paper will be operated as the Moultrie Observer. To tbo Voters of Decatur County: 1 hereby announce my candidacy for the honorable position of Judge of the City Court, subject to the result of the white primary. 1 make this announcement with many misgivings as to my competency to ac ceptably fill this important and trying position. To properly adjudicate the rights of the intelligent citizens of this great and prosperous county might well tax the brain and heart of any man. I can only promise that if honored by your choice I will brim: to the discharge of my duty eyerv faculty of my being and will fearlessly and impartially dis charge the same, as God gives me the wisdom to see, and the power to per form it. 1 have no criticism to make on either of the other gentlemen who are candidates for this position, save to say that if distinguished by your choice, I shall the more highly esteem the honor because chosen before such able compet itors, and if beaten by either, I shall find in such defeat no sting of disgrace, but shall continue to practicemy profes sion with grateful recollection of those friends who voluntarily bestowed upon me their confidence and support. A. L. TOWNSEND. All the little powers engaged in or contemplating revolutions, ei* ther consider Uncle Sam a pana* cea for their ills, or take Teddy for an easy thing. It is a hard matter to tell which is the correct view of the situation. William Jennings Bryan has re turned from his European tour, and flushed with his foreign social triumph", is now seeking fresh worlds to conquer. His "free sil* ver” probably had something to do with his popularity across the water. Another Democratic presiden tial possibility is looming up in the person of Secretary Olney. John H. Clarke of Ohio strongly urges the nomination and s in his opinion Mr. Olney’s nomination would make the Democratic victo* ry surer than that of any man who could be named. - v Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III empress of the second empire is seriously ill with blood poison at Pans. The papers have not generally taken hold of the leap year feat* ure of the new year, but the girls are taking hold in earnest and with considerable success.
