S. RUSSELL BRINSON.
MDITOK AMO WOf.
OFFICIAL ORGAN
DECATUR COUNTY
AND BAINBRIDQE.
Bainbridge, Ga., January 22, 1904.
ON THE WAR PATH.
K iiuir M.-rcer, ot tt»c Fitzgerald
Enterprise lus certainly struck a
warm trail in his determination to
rid his city of vice and lawlessness
of every deter prion In speaking
of his city he says: “There is
more than one place in this com
munity where decent young men
are transformed into outlaws, and
where tough characters from other
cities congregate.” He has issued
his Ultimatum, which could not
well be stronger, and elsewhere
editorially declares as follows: "In
the reform that must come in this
community there is work for the
officers of the law, the courts of
the city, county and state, the
press and all good citizens. The
others had better go now.”

Not since the death o( Jefferson
Davis has the South had occasion
for such universal sorrow, as over
the death of the battle-scarred
Gordon; he who commanded the
Confederate forces so successfully
in time of war and who in times of
peace has headed the United Con
federate Veterans of America,
Gordon held up the hands ot the
South in its struggle against over
whelming odds; and in times of
peace the South does itselt honor
to hold up the name of this hero
to the view of all the world. Gor
don sleeps from life’s battles and
it is but just to say that in him
the people of our country reposed
the fullest confidence.
Under the slate uniformity of
text booX Act passed by the last
legislature there are penalties at
tached to the non enforcement ot
it, Schools not adopting and us
ing the new series of books are to
be deprived of their share of the
public school fund. It is made a
misdemeanor for the principal ot
the school or the county superin
tendent to refuse to enforce the
uniformity law.
They are now telling that Gen
eral Leonard Wood, commanding
the regiment of rough riders at the
time, was not in the battle at San
Juan Hill, but to the rear looking
after ammunition. But really isnt
the rear of the ammunition about
the only safe place to be at when
the guns gooff.
Bryan says that a dark horse
will probably receive the democrat
ic presidential nomination. That
will put Willie out of the running,
as it is a well known fact that his
-color is silver gray.
Teddy hails with relief Hanna’s
statement that he is satisfied with
his present position. We would
remind Mr. Roosevelt that we fre
quently desire more than mere
satisfaction.
Reed Smoot asserts postively
that there is only one bona fide
Mrs. Reed; it must be supposed
that the “others” are merely the
family skeletons.
Broken new year resolutions
bear evidence that the fellow inak-
ing the vow was simply too drunk
to remember anything about it.

AGAINST NEW DISTRICT.
Some time ago Congressman
Griggs introduced a bill for the
establishment of a branch of the
United States court to be stationed
at Albany. It was then stated
that in order to rearrange the
districts it would be necessary to
place Decatur aqd other South
Geo-gia counties in the northern
i district <0 Georgia A meeting of
the bar of Bainbridge and other
interested citizens was held in the
court horse and a committee was
appointed to take up the matter
with Mr. Griggs and to insist that
Decatur county be not placed in
the northern district. A letter
has been received by the commit
tee from Mr. Griggs assuring them
that it was not his intention;
neither had it been to place this
Ctunty in a district where it did
not wish to be placed. The mat
ter so far as we are concerned is
therefore settled. We learn that
Thomas arid other counties have
taken similar action, and it is nof
probable that much progress will
be made in the direction ot the
new district.
Thus far Jim Griggs has made
an active and entirely satisfactory
member of congress so far as the
public generally is concerned, and
we do not believe that he has ever
contemplated any action which did
not meet the approval of his con
stituents, not alone of this but of
other counties in the Fourth Con
gressional District.
THE SPATMODIC PRESS.
Earlier in the season a number
of nervous newspapers over the
country spent weeks and months
in agonizing dread that Mr. Bryan
would again seek the democratic
nomination for president. Even
Mr. Bryan's repeated open disa
vowals failed to ease their pains to
any considerable extent. Now
these satne fellows have sprung
another ghost that in case the
democratic nominee is elected in
1904, the Nebraska statesman may
seek a place in the cabinet—per
haps that of Secretary ot State.
It really is a sad plight of mind
these fellows possess. It is to be
hoped that their strange appari
tions may finally fade away; and
the country be safe after all. Mr.
Bryan has probably never dreamed
of such a thing; yet it would be
useless for him to refute the charge
so far as these woe-bestricken fel
low are concerned. There are none
so blind as those who will not see;
nor one so deaf as the man who
will not hear.
A Florida Exchange Says
The enforcement of the law
against vagrants is certainly a
needed, wholesome tonic for the
scores of idle and worthless young
colored men that infest the dives
and alleys and hangouts at the de
pot stations and on the street cor
ners of this and other cities, says
the High Springs Hornet—“living
easy,” as they call it, with no sin
gle purpose in life but to exist and
imitate the fashionable debut of
some society going white man who
forms their ideal. From this class
of loafers criminals and sneak
thieves are bred, and much of the
trouble and disgrace of the race
come. Put the screws to them
thirty days tight or let them go to
work for an honest living or move
on to a land of milk and honey
where daily toil is an unknown
