IN THE EVES OF THE WORLD.
Russia’s insatiab e greed for
land has not alone cost her the
war which is now on between her
and Japan, but has at the same
time lost her the sympathies of
the nations of the earth. The acs
quisition of territory by proper
methods is all right but when a
power seeks to make herself .Treat
by land grabbing rather than by
the industry of a contented peo-
pie, she is likely to lose the respect
of the world aud the distrust of
her own citizens will be upon her.
Russia stands first in this class and
today finds her with possessions so
exjfr'.sive that she is kept in an
altflost bankrupt condition in order
to sustain an army sufficient to
protect herself from both internal
foes and those from without. Pat'
terning after ancient Rome
she would rule the world.
Japan shares the sympathies of
the world because she is the small
er of the combatants, but more
largely on account of Russia's pol
icy of attempting to subject every
thing everywhere to the dominion
of the Czar, No one can estimate
the value of this sympathy to Japan
in her struggle to maintain her fu«
ture welfare and her national in'
tegrity. Those who believe in
dealing fairly and who are brought
to|realize that the powerful paw of
the Russian bear is reaching out
to control the lands of the small
counties, will lend aid in more
ways than one to her struggling,
weaker foe. Neutrality of this
government may be proclaimed at
any time but the average Ameri-
can citizen will sympathize with
and wherever possible give aid to
Japan, that most progressive of the
nations of the Orient.

Can’t Jump Contract.
Charles Oliver, a negro farm
laborer, was declared guilty of a
breach of contract in a trial before
Judge C. R. Crisp yesterday and a
sentence of six months imposed,
which may be commuted by pay
ment of all costs in the case and
the return to his employer of all
advances. This is the first case
tried in Americus under the new
law regulating contract labor, and
which makes it a misdemeanor for
one to contract with a farmer or
other employer, secure advances
upon strength of such contract
and afterwards jump the game.
Mr. W. C. Carter was the prosecu
tor in the case, and the example
made of Oliver by Judge Crisp
will deter many laborers from
jumping their contracts when they
get the best of their employers in
securing advances.
Such a law rigidly enforced is
not only to the ends of justice, but
is a god'send to the farmers of
the state, as they well know from
past experience.

OUR OPINION IS THAT—
|)|Thomasville seems to be the Re
cuperating place for the Republi
can forces. Secretary Hay is
there at present endeavoring to
rest his shattered nerves while
Senator Hanna is daily expected
in the city where he will spend
some wonths in an effort to recov
er his failing strength.
Sam Small is now connected
with the Macon Telegraph in an
editorial capacity. He is one of
the most brilliant writers in the
state and will add greatly to the
popularity of the Telegraph.
Twentieth century advancement
has a more forcible drawback to
the youthful aspirant than had any
former time unless he seeks it con
servatively. In the wild rush at
money-getting the real identity of
the man is ignored, and while the
opportunities are being juggled be-,
fore him he must needs deduce at
hap-hazard the points of vantage
that would make the acceptance
worth his while, or await another
vision of the juggler’s skill. If the
fever is upon him, and he fritters
away valuable time awaiting op
portunities of which he does not
avail himself to advantage, his
existence is to be deplored in that
it discourages the real motive the
opportunity would carry. There
are those who accept speculatively,
opportunities that might or might
not be the foundation upon which
success can be built, and once into
the vortex of business where man’s
presence is but for his own ad
vancement and gain, the man
whom experience has not made a
thorough master of the situation
seldom withstands the storm. Op*
portunity therefore, does not mean
that which brings success unless
the person to whom it is presented
is qualified to dispose of its de
mands,—competency is required
to make opportunity valid.
The youth must make his op
portunities by diligent application
to the primary conditions of the
business he enters and develop the
ability to accept the advancement
that comes before he can retain
the position it gives.
There is a greater demand for
ability than ever before and glori
ous opportunities that promise
much to the person who will fit
himself to take advantage of them.
An anti-snoring machines has
been invented which it is said
works to perfection. The inventor
should be entitled to a seat in Con
gress—or anything else he might
desire.
