The woer and the woed, the pur
suer and the pursued: Candidate
and voter.
l’errv Heath has resigned since
the death of Senator Hanna. “K’s
an ill wind” that does not Now
good to some one.
"Angel, sweet angel, is my name
written there?” Is the dream of
the many Abou ben Adhem cans
didates in this county.
Every candidate should supply
himself with a poet laureate and
have his record set to poetry.
Some people are more susceptible
to poetry than to prose. But still
some records are too prosaic to be
poetic.
The war has caused a patriotic
wavs to sweep over Russia, con
verting the Finns, Poles and even
the Jews into volunteer soldiers.
The Russian mocto at present is
"United we stand, divided we fall.’
As a reconcilor as well as a divider
war has no equal,
Kentucky house of representa
tives have passed a bill to prohibit
co-education of the races. Under
the new measure corporations con
ducting such institutions may con
duct separate schools for each
race provided they are 25 miles
apart.
One of the candidates was run
ning so fast that he jumped the
Chattahoochee the other day and
got into Alabama before he could
turn and start back across the
country. Gentlemen, confine your
selves to the county lines of De
catur. If you get into Alabama
or Florida nobody might think
enough of you to get a requisition
and bring you back home.
Of all the "possibilities" or as 1
pirants tor the senatorial toga of
Mark Hanna, Congressman Dick
seems to be the sole one in the
race. Governor Herrick and
George Cox say they will not be
candidates, thus leaving the field
practically clear to General Dick.
If elected will Senator Dick be as
great a power in the Republican
party as was Senator Hanna?
OBMHUA’S REPUDIATED BONDS.
The recent decision of the Su
preme Court of the United States
that North Carolina must pay cer
tain fraudulent state bonds issued
during the carpet bag and scalawag
government of that state after the
war has caused some of the other
southern states that have been
forced to repudiate similar fraudu
lent bonds to begin to feel uneasy.
Georgia has' a number of these
outlawed bonds floating around
the country and every once in a
while attempts are made to in
duce the state to pay them.
During the Bullock administra
tion it is stated that the state
debt was increased by $ 12,000,000.
This was an era of building and
bonding railroads which were
never built, but surely bonded.
The scheme was that the state en
dorsed the bonds, which were
floated in New York find Bullock
and his crowd of railroad organiz
ers reaped the harvest and no rail
roads were built. In some instan
ces they would build a few miles
of track to make a ghost of a show
legally. But it is true that several
of the railroads that were organiz
ed and whose bonds were endors
ed by that corrupt state govern
ment never built a mile of track.
One of the latter is said to have
been the Bainbridge, Cuthbert and
Columbus Railroad, without a mile
of track, and yet £240,000 worth
of bonds were endorsed by Bul-
lock^and sold in New York.
The question is who got all the
money that was raised on such
fraudulent transactions ? Most
of the scalawags who pocketed the
boodle, as soon as the white peo
ple got back into power, packed
their little carpet bags and tiacked
back north, but not all of them.
Some remained and settled down,
but refused to settle np, and lead
ever afterwards pnilanthropic and
Ch istian lives. No doubt it is now
painful for them to review these
foul reconstruction days from the
dizzyetheie lhe : gl,tstO vhich they
have progressed.
The legislature has several
times repudiated the worst of
those old bonds and have contin
uously refused payment of them
This action was taken after thor
ough investigation by committees
ef competent lawyers. Under the
facts of their issuance and the
knowledge of their fraud had by
most of the parties purchasing
them it may be safe to say tha't
the Supreme Court will never be
asked to make Georgia pay the
fraudulent Bullock bonds.

her republican government. The
president has been elected and the

is the name of the new official: in
our language the word signifies a

BUSINESS AND SPECULATION.
Energy may well be called the
foundation of success.
Persi°tent effort removes obsta-
cles in business just as a continu
ous flow of water wears away the
jagged edge of a stone. It rounds
a man into shape that fits respon
sible position and forms by its re
sults the conservative laws that
rule well-regulated systems of bus
iness that are so greatly copied to
day
There is however, a woeful lack
of energy as progress pushes fur
ther. Climaxes of great moment
are reached and passed; they eome
oftener than they used, because
the country has developed to the
extent that years of energetic
planning naturally form decisive
results. Such conditions make
men feverish, having little else
than excitement for business train
ing they perforce, seek the advice
of those grown old in service, upon
which advice they act Compli
cations arise and are dealt with
through channels long and care
fully tried, or else the whirlpool
carries another business disaster
into the nation’s annals.
Disappointed in their busi
ness ability men turn, in most
cases, to speculation. The cotton
market with its feverish fluctua
tion will either swallow their
“stake" within a short time or
