HI-ENNIAl. sessions legislature,
Last work’s issue of the Haiti'
bridge Democrat contains a half
column editorial on bi-ennial ses
sions of the legislature and urges
the voters to choose only such
men for representatives as will
favor this important measure. We
endorse most heartily the senti'
ment expressed by our contem
however, it might
porary; nowcvci, it might have
gone further in order to call atten
tiontothe fact that a Decatur
county representative is autnor of
a bill now before the General As
se nbly providing for bi ennial
Under the provisions of
his bill a session will be held
every other .year instead of the
present annual sessions, and the
bi ennial session will be limited to
Mr. Brinson, who is
sixty days
author of the bill, is at present a
candidate for re-election to the
legislature, and he hopes to effect
the passage of the bill in the event
he is returned to the House. Bi
ennial sessions would mean not
only a direct saving of from $75,-
000 to 1100,000 as the actual ex*
penses of the session, but would
save infinitely more indirectly;
since the oftener the session holds,
the ottener appropriations of all
kinds arc increased. At least it
would seem so.
There is every argument in fav
or of bi ennial sessions and if Mr.
Brinson should be denied a return
to the lieu c in order to complete
his work there, it is to be hoped
that others may realize he import
ance of this bill which he has in
troduced ar.d press its passage as
early as possible.
Annual meetings of the General
Assembly are useless, and the
state should not be run to the
expense of conducting them under
fie circumstances.
The Japs fashioning their sea
campaign after the manner of the
Americans have excelled us at our
own game. It must be a conso
lation to our maligned naval heroes
to know that in loreign lands at
least their tame is yet unsu lied.
In America, the name of Dewey
isurely heard, while Hobson the
hero of the Merimac, is running for
Congress from Alabama, with a
mere chance for election.
No, Maude, dear, it is platonic
not plutonic friendship to which
you refer. Though not very fa
miliar with the latter term we
opine that the ‘‘friend (or friends)
at whose solicitation" the average
candidate enters a race might be
called plu tonic, since in some
cases he is the devil of a friend.
Mamie DeCris, the “diamond
queen is once more endeavoring
to secure a pardon. We wonder
what sensation she will spring on
the public this time. It would be
wise to allow her to serve the re-
tnaining ten months of her sen
tence in the hope that her prison
experience will work in her a thor-.
ough reformation.
The friends, throughout the
state, of Kditor Pendleton will re-,
joice to learn that he is rapidly
convalescing and will shortly re-
sume his work upon the Macon
Telegraph.

Some Encouraging Farm Conditions.
A trip overland through western
Decatur county, discloses the fact
that the farmers of that section
are undergoing a wonderful
awakening to their possibilities,
and are taking advantage of them.
Kveiywhere may be seen woven
wire fences stretching away for
mdes, enclosing barn yards, fields
1 id pastures; and adding wonder
folly to the appearance of the
farms Seme notable examples
re Hodges & Powell of Cyrene
who are rapidly enclosing all their
r 1 ms with these fences; Mr. J. J
'poonerof Rock Pond district is
"W putting in eight solid miles of
raven wire fencing; Messrs Bar
aw Williams of Steam Mill and
■> D. Cherry of Donalsonville are
putting in similar stretches while
reores of smaller farmers are en-
using their premises in like man
n :r.
Yet, this is but one evidence of
lie thrift and prosperity of the
farmers of that section. About
very other man lives in a new,
well-constructed frame house, its
white walls and painted picket fer>
ces surrounding, looms up as the
traveller approaches; splendid
b irns filled with fat mules and
nigh bred cattle, buggies and har
ness new, and stacks of modern
farm machinery are beginning to
make work on the farm a real pleas-,
ure. Hay making in abundance is
-■videnced by the mowers, reapers,
binders and presses, as well as by
cribs filled with baled pea vines,
crab grass and clover.
There’s no estimating the
amount wTiich has been spent by
farmers of the west side of the
county during the past eighteen
months or two years in their efforts
to keep pace with the agricultural
progress that is now sweeping this
section of the state. We most
heartily commend their efforts anti
we shall be very much surprised if
ihjyare not patterned after with
great profit by the farmers all over
this section We have not yet
been through the F.astern section
uf the county to any considerable
extent; but we are satisfied that
we shall find them leading the same
merry chase after modern machin
es and modern methods of farm-
mg.
There is more genuine indepen*.
deuce on the farm than anywhere
else, and it is such efforts at mod
ernizing the work and making
more comfortable the homes that
hall as each year drifts past, add
glories afresh to the old. With
sturdy tread, with well-filled bins
and smoke houses the farmer is
marching on to happiness and pros
perity, and God’s bright sunshine
shall smile upon him from Hu
skies. We hope to sec the drift
of the populace country ward—the
tiue source of wealth and the birth
ace of independence. The world
is running aftei'attractions and as
these are added to the farm we
may expect the rural districts to
blossom as the rose and each hon
est tiller of the soil shall own a
Kingdom unto himself.

Contract Jumpers on the Jump
What is known as the contract
abor law passed by the last legis-
’ 1 rure is being enforced in Dough
ty county, the second instance
I which it had been appealed to
n this section. A farmer there
had entered into a contract with a
negro cropper for this year and
had advanced him money and sup
plies with which to start his crop.
Without returning the value of
the supplies and the money so ad
vanced he with ut cause left and
lound employment elsewhere.
Under this new law such a breach
of contract is held to be a misde
meanor and is punishable as such,
his is an admirable law for the
otection of the farming interests
■id when it is enforced a few times
01 every communi’y the old nui-
sancc and evil of contract jumpers
will be done awav with; and the
farmers will have just cause to
appreciate the action of the last
legislature in passing this much
needed law.
