THE EXECUTIVE committee.
y\* the meeting of the Lxecu-
the Committee last week in Ar
Janta the State Convention was or
dew! for June ist. At this time
delegates will be selected to rej>
regent Georgia at the Democratic
National Convention which con
venes in St. Louis.
Tnis selection of delegates to the
n . lt i ona l convention, always an irn
!t, will demand, this
careful consideration
portant tv
year, mor
than ever before. "There is a tide
in the affairs” of state, "which
taken at the flood will le d to for
tune.” This crisis is at hand in
the Democratic party. Never be
fore, so we believe, have the Dem
ocrats had so splendid a chance for
success. The division in the Re
publican ranks and the unpopular
ity of Roosevelt, their probable
nominee, render it possible tor the
Democrats to win out in the com
ing campaign.
Out of the list of candidates
there must be one strong enough
to win and if the party will pull to
gether and support the right man
there is a strong hope for his elec
tion. There is so much bickering
over the platform, so many
"booms'’ that it is likely that the
time for election will arrive and
find the Democrats idly discussing
the "Hearst Room,” Cleveland’s
chances and other such uifferen
ccs. It would be advisable for the
Democrats to adopt the “stand
pat" motto; stand pat for Democ
racy and her strongest son.
The point now in question is
the selection of the delegates; the
representatives who have a voice
n naming the Democratic candi-
didate. Owing to the number of
aspirants, the seeming strength of
each and in consideration of the
uncertainty in regard to the Dem
ocratic platform there will be
much difficulty in deciding upon
the strongest man—the right man
to make the race. Therefore great
care and judgment should be exer
cised in choosing the men who are
^to represent us at the national con
vention. Only those who have the
best interests of the party at heart;
only those we are assured have
been always thoroughly loyal and
true to the highest principles of
Democracy should be entrusted
with this responsibility.
If the convention be composed
of such men, there can be but one
mind, one choice; then, if the one
selected fail to lead his party to
victory the fault will not lie within
us. It is a question of fate,
well as strength, and if we fail
simply “was not so to be.”
THE HIGHER LIFE
One of the latest and most
commendable achievements in lit-
erature comes from a French au
thor and has to do with "The Ideal
of Future Society. The work is
reviewed in a popular magazine
for March aud sets forth in a pret'
ty array of words the tendency of
the present day people to moral
ascent. One short sentence well
presents the idea so nobly brought
out and that, “The highest thing
he human soul can ever know —
i auty,’’ is a sermon within itself.
It is a well known fact that de
spondency shortens life, and that
dthough there are innumerable
versons who have a hard lot in life
among the poorest we find the
.nost cheerful. We argue that of
those especial people having never
known the higher and broader
venditions of life, it is less a sub-
lert for comment to appreciate
.heir dispositions than to consider
that their surroundings cause such
a state to exist, liut do we satisfy
our consciences in disposing of the
matter in such a manner ? Inso
much as capacity allows they find
the beautiful things in life and en
joy them with just as much ardor
is does the higher intellect that is
gifted with greater insight and
finds a greater beauty upon furtner
search. The tendency then is to
uplift the entire people: to tenant
the world with a race of cheerful
inhabitants, prolonging the aver-
ige life and developing the intel
lect in high and low alike to a
keener sense of justice and of
moral obligation.
The pursuit of the highest ideal
hat of beauty, is quite a natural
one that has been allowed to suffer
oo much under adverse circum
lances. The highest aim in life
is seldom accomplished it is grant
ed, still civilization is broadened
nd perfected to a greater extent
when the high ideal isjthe influence
that leads humanity ever upward,
and more real good is gotten out
of life in such a pursuit even
though the ideal is not fully
complished. It paves the way for
a higher civilization as the heri
tage to posterity.
The highest ideal then is to de
velop the intellect, and oneself to
the highest state of perfection
possible, and that the motive be
gratitude to our maker. It
clearly shown that optimism
wisdom, and that wisdom de
mands a high intellectual aim.

The one at Albany was recently
destroyed by fire with little insur
ance on it, but the owners are re
placing it on a larger scale. That
shows what they think of it as a
money maker. Bainbridge has
one in store for her and it is to be
hoped that it will soon take
definite shape.
Travel over the Georgia, Flori
da and Alabama railroad has
creased wonderfully in the last
year. Since its trains have been
running to Cutnbert the discom
fort of the travel to Macon and At
lanta has been largely eliminated
as it is much more convenient to
go by way of Cuthbert than the
old Albany route, and every one is
taking advantage of it. The train
service over the G. F. & A. is
equal to that of the larger roads
and their day coaches are much
superior to those of some of them.
Bainbridge people should take a
pride in the G. F. & A,
We solicit the continued good will and patre

Grover Cleveland has now been
accused of having a negro at his
white house table to dinner with
him when he was president. This
calumny was evidently sprung by
the other side as an offset to
the Roosevelt-Booker Wa hing-
ton dining. Mr. Cleveland in an
open letter has attempted to prove
an alibi—for the negro.
A Baltimore young man claims

debut cannot be long postponed.

It has generally beep conceded
that a woman could out-talk any
thing in the world, but we venture
to say that the ladies will yield the
palm willingly to the gentleman
from Baltimore.
Unless Utah is a very rich coun

pensive business. In this vicinity
it is as much as a man can do—
and usually more—to support one
wife and maintain one home; while
President Smith, of the Mormon
church claims to have five wives
all living in separate homes.
