JUDGE HENRY Q. TURNER.
The resignation of Judge Henr)
G. Turner, associate justice of tht
supreme court which was tendered
to Governor Terrell last week,
caused much speculation and sur
prise throughout the state.
It seems that he accepted tht
office with the understanding that
he might retire later if he saw fit;
although his resignation was ;
matter of general surprise, it is
probable that it was not unexpect
ed to Governor Terrell.
The appointment of Judge Tur
ner as associate justice met witl
the approval of the general public
and his career while serving hl>
term upon the bench proved emi
nently satisfactory. It is a source
of regret to his friends and admir
ers that he thought ht to resign
his position. Governor Terrel'
upon receiving Mr. Turner’s res
ignation at once appointed Judge
Beverly D. Evans as his successor
Judge Turner will return, so it it
said, to Quitman, his old home,
where he will spend the rest of his
days quietly and peacefully.
A number of the b'g league ba'l
teams are taking their work out
season among the cities of Geor
gia.
The Decatur county candidati
who is running for office will have
a ‘•walk-over”—to the cotton patch
of course,—after April ist.
The Cairo Messenger is p
breezy sheet, and evidences the
fact that the citizens of the town
are progressive and believe in pat
ronizing their home paper.
The average office seeker can
say his little piece to the voter as
though it was set to music. April
Fool’s Day may transform many
of them into funeral dirges.
There will be no cup race this
year, so the American Yacht Club
so announces. The cup racers are
all probably running for office, as
this is election year from president
down.
Feminine hosiery with pockets
for small change has been invent
ed but it is difficult to see how this
will simplify the trouble women
always have getting in their pock
ets—Quitman Free Press.
The mud slinger has not put in
his appearance in Dooly county
politics this year,—Vienna News.
It is a pity the same cannot be
said in regard to Decatur county
politics. It may be an “insideous”
form but it is mud slinging all the
same.
MOTIVES OR DEEDS.
Should a man be judged by his
deeds or the motives that prompt
them? In this {busy work-a-day
world we have leisure to sift the
chaff from the grain; discriminate
between the true and the false,
neither, it would seem, have wt
time to seek the reason for ouj
neighbors’ actions. We note tht
deed—crime it may be—criticise
and possibly deplore it; then with
out a thought of the cause which
inspired the act, condemn the ac
tor. A hasty summary of thi
case in point, a harsh judgment
in which prejudice is probably tht
ruling motive—and a man’s life is
ruined.
What injustice is thus often
carelessly and ignorantly done oui
fellow men. How ofted is a man’s
life warped, his whole career blight
ed by a heedless word spoken in
an idle moment. The influence ot
a hastily|formed opinion is marvel
ous in its power for evil. It reach
es out, touches and moulds in pari
the opinions-of numerous others;
it grows and expands until its
power is unlimited and the result
disastrous.
"Bad new travels fast;” is It be
cause we are more ready to listen
to that which is detrimental to oui
neighbor or does good travel
equally fast yet. because it is good,
heed it less ?
Before we utter words which
have the power to wound or injurt
another we should know that wi
are justified in our opinions, Wi
should consider the possible mo
tives that inspired the act of thi
man we presume to criticise; then
we must ask ourselves how w<
would act under similar circum
stances. Given the same condi
ditions, same motive and incent
ives, would we act in any wise dif
ferently ? Remember the golden-
rule and judge as we would bi
judged.
A crime, whether the result ol
premeditation or the outcome of
uncontrollable impulse, inevitably
brings its punishment to the crim
inal. A harvest of passionate re
gret must be reaped; an unavaila
ble remorse ever present in his
heart. The burden can never be
wholly lifted and if the soul be
sensitive the weight of sorrow will
crush him and eventually sap his
life away.
“Each heart knows its secret
sorrow” and the skeleton in the
life of each of us should teach us
to’be kind and generous in our
estimate of our fellow creatures.
"Judge not lest ye be out judged.”
Has Port Arthur been taken
seems to be as puzzling a question
as “who hit Billy Patterson?”
The Mormon President Smith
confesses to being the father of 42
children. Now we know why the
Smith name is so common.—Ma
con News. Probably the Jones’
and Brown’s can be accounted for
in like manner.
Judge Richard Russell is a
splendid fellow but he will hardly
supercede Judge Simmons as
Georgia’s chief justice. Judge
Simmons has made a faithful offi
cial and no doubt will receive the
recognition at the polls that he
richly deserves.
It is probable that the post office
scandals may prove a winning card
for the democrats. Even scandal
can result in good some times, it
seems.
The Ides of April are approach
ing and as the time grows short
the speil of the candidate waxes
long. The jokes on April Fool’s
day this year will seem exceeding
ly practical—to some of the candi
dates.
When that little "Cannon-ade”
of the White House began in con
gress a few days ago the very
walls shook and the reverberations
ran throughout Washington. NevJ
crtheless Mr. Roosevelt will be
the candidate, if notJthe choice of
the republicans for president. ,

Albany’s city council has been

that they consider the present un
